ParticipantWhat is this Windsor, CT date?
http://www.zvents.com/z/windsor-ct/greg … -182646206
It shows up as “Gregg Allman, with Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers And Bela Fleck.”
Here’s the official link:
http://sscsummerwind.org/the2011season/ … tunderthe/
The official site ain’t much help. Plus it took forever to come up. Whatevs, I know, but still.
“The summer wind came blowing in, from across the sea…”
Pro: The “venue” (which I’ve never heard of…but that don’t mean shit, I suppose 😆 ) is about 75 mins. from my house, straight down 91, and apparently somewhere ’round Bradley International (heh)/Hartford-Springfield/Windsor Locks Airport in lovely, metropolitan Windsor, CT.
Con (potential): “Gregg Allman, with Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers And Bela Fleck.” ‘Nuff said? I dunno. Wait a minute; one link says the Noisemakers will be there, the other, the venue site, lists “Gregg Allman, Bruce Hornsby and Bela Fleck.” Which is it? Is BH opening? Is this one of those “co-headlining” gigs, and if so, noting Fleck, is that Fleck with BH, or Fleck and The ‘Tones with BH, or Fleck and The ‘Tones opening, then BH, then Allman? What about the Noisemakers? Who knows? The venerable website for the “Summer Wind Performing Arts Center At Windsor” doesn’t say.
I realize that BH has spoiled us. We’ve just come to expect certain things from a BH show, and I just don’t know about dealing with the miscellanea to hear BH (Friday 91 traffic, Allman Bros. fans — no offense, Allman Bros. tunes and Gregg solo, possibility of not knowing about set length, somewhat pricey tix for uncertain set time) play for 30-45 mins. That’s just the way I feel, man. And yes, I’ve seen Allman solo before: 1986, New Year’s Eve, “I’m No Angel” tour, opening for SRV at the Curtis Hixon Convention Center, Tampa FL. Ol’ skool, beeyotch! 😆 Been there, done that.)
Hopefully BH will be scheduling more New England/Tri-state area dates….so that I’ll stop bitching.
And all of us peeps who live in MA/CT/VT/NH/ME/NY/RI/NJ can git our noisemaking on….without having to deal with paying top dollar to hear BH do a 45 min. set.
(At least he ain’t Los Lobos, who this spring opened for Eric “God” Clapton, at equally celestial prices…)

Participantas a fan of both Lobos and EC, I probably would have enjoyed those shows…but I get what you’re saying about the prices…
Personally, i would dig the opportunity to see Gregg, Bruce and Bela, but I also understand your point there…when you have specific agenda that you know might not be fulfilled, it makes it hard to bite the bullet.
I saw Eric Johnson’s acoustic tour recently and he was touring with two other acoustic guitar players. I assumed all three would be playing separate sets and jamming together somewhere in the midst of it all. Instead, it ended up they were all three on stage together for one set that lasted just under two hours. Considering that I had driven nearly four hours to mainly see EJ, I was not thrilled even though the overall musical quality was solid.

ParticipantAh yes, p’raps I shouldn’t have posted while trying to watch the rain-delayed Sox/Angels game. A bit cranky…
The tix for the Summerwind Came Blowin’ In show are nowhere near as much as some of those for the EC tour with Lobos opening were; the better half was looking into tix (as she was in Los A during a swing of said tour) and she came back saying “hell, no.” So, a lil’ bit of “late-night exag” there…
(Aside: What was the deal with the Eric Johnson and 2 Other Dudes Unplugged show? I don’t think that I even heard of that one..)
As for Allman, I get his stature and the tour for the new TBone-produced solo disc. I don’t begrudge him or anyone that (big of me, huh 🙄 ), but he just ain’t my bag. I’m just wary of driving from Bratt-area to Hartford for a little bitty Noisemaker set.
Bruce usually spoils us North Elitist-coasters with all kinds of dates — for instance, in Fall ’09, we got (what I can remember off of the top of my carping head) NYC, Boston, Portsmouth, Albany, Great Barrington (West MA), and Bridgeport. That doesn’t even count the gig at Foxwoods in March of that year, or the gigs in ’08 (including the monster Lowell performance). $35 to $50 to for at least 2 hours of prime rockitude from BH. Spoiled, I tells ya!
I’m hoping that a few more shows get slotted in somewhere around that Windsor Locks Airport Sinatra Tune In The Middle Of Nowhere date, otherwise I might ending up eating my words and whine…
All summer long, we sang the song
And then we strolled that golden sand
Two sweethearts and the summer wind…T

ParticipantDamn, looking harsh for the T and possible New Eng. dates…
For a while this afternoon, I was all about going to this date after ascertaining that the show starts at 6 p.m. and goes to 11:30 p.m. Supposedly.
Jaimoe’s side project opens, then either BH or Bela, then whoever is after, then Gregg from what I can understand. (The Guinness Goon says that for some show, BH opens for Bela…are they switching spots?)
The reserved seats, under a tent, are $78. The gen ads are apparently behind said tent, and to the sides…for $45.
Have never been to the Summer Wind, and now with a grumpy and cheap wind blowin’ in across me, I can’t say that I will make it to lovely Windsor. More of the same — just don’t wanna waste the money, when BH has spoiled us so much in the past.
This could all change as the date nears, though — I won’t be able to make the 9/3 gig at Portsmouth as well as the 10/2 show in Beantown, both for fam functions, dontchaknow. P’raps another gig will pop up between those two, udderwise I’ll be heckling Bruce at the world-famous Colonial in metropolitan Keene…. 😆

Awfully helpful of BH to help us with our decisions, huh? 😆
Gotta admit, offering the stagetimes is sho’ ’nuff straight up of BH/management, even though it’s gonna cost ’em in terms of attendance. But hey, I understand…BH got the skills to pay the bills, but this time I will regretfully not be contributing a love offering. Unfortunate, but true. 😥
So, as I’ve mentioned in the past, I’ll be traveling the 25 meager miles from my house in SE VT to the Colonial Theatre (yes, that’s “theatre,” people, NOT “theater.” That’s how ya know it’s art… 🙄 😆 ) in Keene, NH for my first ever solo show. I hope that by next April ol’ BH is ready to play some Carter, some Ives, some Ravel, some Ornette, etc etc…’cuz that’s what I’ll be petulantly asking for.

ParticipantYeah T,
I am glad I didn’t find out the hard way by driving 4 hours to find out that Bruce will be play for only an hour and fifteen minutes before Bela’s hour and forty minute set.
Yeah it would still be a cool show because you know they would both make appearances in each others sets, but if I’m driving four hours for a show its gotta be Bruce playing at least two hours after Bela’s hour opener.
I still have the Columbus and Pittsburgh shows to go to which are only 2+ hour drives so that won’t be that bad.
The Columbus show will be extra sweet as it is the 16th anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death and usually Bruce pays homage to him when he plays on that date. I got to see him in Buffalo that date in 09 and also on Jerry’s birthday in Buffalo in 08 and at both of those shows Bruce spoke a lot about Jerry and played a couple of GD tunes.
I am not one to ask for GD songs at a Bruce show as I know it probably annoys him but on that date it is a giving. I mean how annoying is it to see the part of Bruce’s crazy mixture of crowd to yell out Jack Straw at every show knowing it annoys him. I am one of the biggest GD fans and that annoys me. As much as I enjoy Bruce play Dead jams I don’t expect it….I’m too busy trying to get ‘Lost in the Snow’ and ‘Invisible’ you know songs that don’t get much play but are my favorites.July 19, 2011 at 12:54 pm #32691Takavl
ParticipantWow G —
So 4 hours is yer cut-off, huh? You’re hardcore, mang…even in my childless and single days, I’d start cryin’ if I had to drive from (back when I lived there) say, Tampa to Gainesville 😆 . Back in them days, more groups would go down Tpa/St Pete/Clearwater way, so it was awfully convenient for small shows at clubs, larger shows at theaters and halls, and of course, the Sombrero (old Tampa Stadium) for Pink Floyd, etc.
Even now, you drive 2+? That’s about the distance from here to Beantown…which I will never do again without staying over. It’s not fun slapping yourself in the face most of the drive back, even for BH….
I think most around here get where BH is coming from vis a vis reqs. for Dead covers (dare I say that most around here were BH fans and NOT Dead fans?) — save for maybe the hardcore Deadheads who just go to see Bruce for a lil’ bit o’ nostalgia trippin’? Heh. That’s a mindset that I have to actively try to empathize with; I can understand the appeal of cover/tribute groups, and I can attempt to appreciate the devotion that the old school ‘heads have, but Bruce was Bruce before filling in, and he’s still Bruce now. He’s not Bobby or Phil or Mickey or Kreutz, right?
One time though, on one of my request lists, I photocopied a pic of a cliched-looking trustafarian and added a comic-book caption of him saying “C’mon bro…play ‘Jack Straw’!” down at the bottom of said list, under my legit wishes. I wonder how many other smartasses are out there, joshing ol’ Bruce with such crap?

T that request photo sounds pretty funny. Bruce should have put it up on one of his collages.
Treasure Island: Small world, man…the better half’s parents retired from the Woodstock, NY school system to live in TI; she followed them after finishing univ.
Spring T: Interesting; who’dya like?
5 hours to see Phish: Better you than me, G! 😆
Collage: It was up! (Are the old ones accessible…from a barely-cursory glance at the new off. site, it looks like only the 2 most recent are available ‘for viewing.’) I believe that, along with the breadlock canasta rasta there were pix of Ornette, Ravel, and I can’t remember right now…it was for the Lowell ’08 show. (My virgin experience, and what a great show…sigh 😆 )
EDIT: Here it be, look for the pix of Ravel and Ives at the top left, then click to enlarge…
