ParticipantSo apparently there was no taping at the Lousiville show, and again no taping in Portland according to an Oregon taper I talked to. And he thought the decision not to allow taping came from Bruce, not the venue.
Does anyone know straight from the horse’s mouth what the deal is here? Does this reflect a new policy of no taping from this point forward? Hope not…. 😥

If it’s coming from Bruce, maybe it’s because he’s already giving away the box set and wants to make sure he recoups the cost of the live show later? Maybe he’s planning a solo live CD for later? Maybe he just happened to play a few venues in a row that are sticklers for not taping?
I don’t know, Will. But frankly, from a financial standpoint, I’m surprised he’s allowed such a liberal taping policy for so long anyway.

ParticipantWho knows…I put in an email to management via the official site asking for clarification.
While being able to openly record Bruce’s performances is indeed a great privilege, I really doubt that allowing live taping has any financial cost for Bruce whatsoever. All the traders I know already own all of his official releases and buy the new ones as soon as they come out.
If anything, having good quality live tapes out there increases his audience and his number of potential purchasers. A non-trivial fraction of Bruce’s fans (myself included) are longtime Deadheads who got turned onto his music via live recordings of the Dead from when they played together, which led them to seek out recordings and then the real thing down the road.
If munckmusic started releasing EVERY show, in a timely fashion, and with nothing cut out, I’d give up taping Bruce in a heartbeat. Until then I really hope it doesn’t get taken away.

ParticipantSolo show taping
I went to the Spartanburg show this evening. I had called ahead to ask about taping. The venue staff said that Bruce’s management says no recording and no cameras. Basically said don’t waste your time trying to bring in equipment.
I got to speak briefly with Wayne Pooley before the show. I asked if this was the venue not allowing taping or Bruce. He said Bruce says no taping. I did not get a chance to ask if this was only for the solo dates or a new policy for all shows. We shall see.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Gunky

KeymasterI’m catching up with Bruce in a couple of weeks, so I’ll ask him for some clarification.
I don’t think I’m betraying any confidences in saying that almost all of these shows are being videoed for a project that Bruce has in mind, so maybe that’s a reason why.

ParticipantThis is all very strange. The 2002 Villa Montalvo shows were being videotaped for the DirecTV production and yet open taping was allowed. Wayne’s had his Powerbook there making a multitrack recording of every show I’ve been to since at least 2001 and yet taping was allowed.
I sent an email to the official “Contact Us” link on Bruce’s website asking if there had been a change in taping policy and got this reply:
“Dear Will,
There are no board patches, but you may record as long as the venue does not ban it.
Thanks for writing,
Melissa”*sigh*
I’d be interested to hear what clarification you can get, Si.

Well then, it sounds like venue management was giving you a line of BS. A record label can’t force their artists to ban audience taping, especially not an artist of Bruce’s stature.

ParticipantOkay, so I got a response from Bridget Nolan and she states:
“Bruce has requested that there be no taping for the remainder of the solo/box set tour.”
This confirms what I’d heard at Maryland Hall from security.

KeymasterI’ll confirm that – no taping or distribution of this tour, please – and that’s from on high.
Thanks.

ParticipantFWIW…About a week ago I emailed Melissa at Bruce’s office, asking about the taping policy for the upcoming solo shows in January and February, and explicitly mentioning knowing people who had been shut down in October and November. Her response, just in today:
Hi, Will. As long as the venue allows it, you may tape. However, there are no board patches.
Thanks,
Melissa -
