ParticipantAnyone have an opinion on Samson’s Zoom H4 Handy Digital Recorder for recording concerts?
http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1901Anything you’d recommend instead in a similar price range? (~$300)

ParticipantIt’s a pretty good deal in my opinion. The built in mics are not great, but at least comparable to other machines in its price range.
One big advantage it has over the others in its price range (eg the Edirol R9) is that it has XLR inputs and provides phantom power, so you can use it with real mics. However, it won’t work with the minplug based stealth mics without an adapter.
Here are some shows I’ve taped with external mics and a Zoom H4:

I bought this recorder the week it came out. It is PHENOMENAL….The microphones work beautifully and the four track recorder is amazing…You can record four tracks, and then when you have them perfect you can combine them into one track leaving 3 more tracks to use! So it’s basically a 12 track recorder. And so on and so forth….It’s a great great recorder and for that price? Steal. Get it now.

ParticipantThe other day I had the chance to run the Zoom H4 with the internal mics and my Studio Projects LSD2 > Presonus Firebox > MacBook setup from the exact same spot for a band called Ockham’s Razor. Here’s one track from both sources:

ParticipantI used to use DAT
I had a Sony D3 with SonicStudio’s DSM mic’s
only recorded Springsteen shows with them.
But I love DAT boots.

ParticipantHmmm, while I’m still pretty happy with the sound per dollar offered by the Zoom, all things considered, I’m a little disappointed in how it measured in some tests by myself and others. You get what you pay for I guess.

I might be interested in selling mine to a forum member at a discount in order to finance an upgrade though. If anyone’s interested, shoot me a PM, and sorry for the spam.
