I was doing some searching this morning and stumbled across the last time Bruce played grand piano for the grateful dead. I figured I would pass this on to the rest of the community.

This was also the last time the Grateful Dead played the weight.

    Enjoy!

For the record, that was NOT the last time Mr. Hornsby played piano (I make no distinction about what size
piano he played) with the Grateful Dead in concert. He played with them (on a black grand piano) on the Summer 1995 tour for a few dates, including the Saturday & Sunday shows on June 24 & 25 at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC.

I remember being at those shows, and I was wandering around the back of the field. Being “less than tall” I can never see the stage, and I didn’t realize Bruce was with the boys that night (although I should have known, as he always played with them when they played near Virginia). Anyway – I just remember hearing the keyboards and saying to myself, “Wow, Vince (Welnick, the Dead’s keyboard player at the time) sounds really good today!” Then I got a look at the large video screens and realized what was going on, and said to myself “oh – I see. He sounds so good because it’s Bruce!” :D

Thanks for the clarification of these shows.

I wrote this up without actually researching his last show with them. This is by far the best version of him on piano before Garcia’s death that year.

I think the better show Bruce played that year with the Dead was 3/23/95. Garcia specifically asked Bruce to come to that show and give the band “a kick in the ass” and that’s exactly what Bruce did. IMO the best show the Dead performed in 1995.
