Is anyone else finding that the studio recordings are falling farther down their favorites list as the accumulate Bruce live from the various sources available?

I like the Studio material as much as I ever did but the live stuff out numbers it by about 5 to 1 in my collection now and the gap is growing.

I find myself choosing the richly varied live material over the studio stuff more and more frequently.

    Am I alone?

    Live vs Studio

No Steve, you’re not alone. I too have amassed a pretty large collection of live Bruce shows and I find that I listen to it far more than any of the studio albums. For example I bought the 2005 Oregon Zoo show from BruceHornsbyLive.com about 6 weeks ago and I’ve listened to it over 20 times! I love the live shows because you get a great vibe when the band are giving it large, and songs are often played differently to the albums or get merged into other songs.

Having said all that though, I love going back and listening to the albums every once in a while. Earlier this week I put “Scenes from the Southside” in my CD player and boy did I enjoy it! After all the bluegrass “Jacob’s Ladder” I’ve been exposed to of late, it’s great to hear the original again. The same goes for “The Show Goes On” and “The Valley Road” – both brilliant songs.

I agree… the live versions really take the songs to new places they could never go in the studio. Its a much greater challenge for an artist to better live than in the studio. It’s not hard to sound like a virtuoso after some work with Protools and autotune.

Also, I caved in and bought an advance copy of the Skaggs-Hornsby album from ebay a couple weeks ago (don’t worry I’m buying a legit copy too). I found the album version of Superfreak vastly inferior to the live performance on CMT. Don’t get me wrong, its a great album and will likely end up being in my top 3 Bruce albums (I’ll post a review shortly), but live versions will always be superior.

In face, I’m not sure if I can think of a Bruce song for which I’d rather hear the studio version instead of the live version…. well maybe “Listen to the Silence” but thats only because I don’t have a choice :)

I do still love to hear the origonal Valley road and the studio versions are still pretty good, it is just that the lives are so much better…

Victor’s “Redux” thread got me thinking about this topic and I thought it might be interesting to revisit it. Does anyone have a particular live version of one of Bruce’s songs they really love?

My pick would be Candy Mountain Run. When Bruce starts playing that introduction with the sixteenth notes (you all know the one) and begins Big Rock Candy Mountain, it spreads a feeling of joy and happiness through the whole audience! If he includes Children Of Zion sometime during the song-wow!

Anyone else feel strongly about a live version of a Bruce song?

    absolutely agree.

Bruce shines on his live recordings in a way that the studio tracks just don’t show at all – even the ones which feature the more improvised stuff.

I mean,- they’re not bad – they’re really nice tunes with that unique “bruce” flavour we all know and love,- but they just miss that magic,- possibly that more “human” feel of the live stuff.

    Kind regards

    Hey David!

That IS wild…Maybe the ESP was in overdrive or that funky Halloween vibe was still lingering in the air last night. 😆

You’re right about the daily dose! I hadn’t gotten around to playing it,but today I did and it’s incredible!
