KeymasterDavid’s original post, which I deleted in error:
Quote:This is a Thought From A Road Scholar!Vic, one of our Global moderators (not quite yet a Global Moderator 😆 ) knows about this. So, Vic cannot have any input in on this one.
At the Boone show, after our meetup, I went back to my car which was parked in a faculty lot at Appalachian State to get my tic & a cigar. As I was walking to the show, the path took me to the rear and side of the auditorium. As I was passing, Bruce was out at his car getting his clothes for the show. I waved at Bruce and he immediatedly waved back! I couldn’t help but watch as he got out his infamous black shirt from his car. As I was walking bye, I heard his door slam and looked over my shoulder and he was waving back at me again.
I looked around thinking he had to be waving at someone else, but I was the only one around. I wanted to go talk to him, but I didn’t and just waved back again.
The next day, I drove to Greensboro from Boone (beautiful drive!
) I drove to my hotel and and could not believe it! It was Bruce’s car. I thought to myself “no way”! But, it seems I’ve run into Bruce before at hotels.
I walked into the lobby to check in, but my room was not ready. They asked me to go down into the sports bar and have a drink “on the house”. As I walked in, I could not believe what I saw!
There was Bruce over at a booth reading the paper. We were staying at the same hotel again!
What do I do? Do I go over and say hello? Do I go over and ask him to sign my Intersections CD? Do I go over and strike up a converstation? What do I do?
What would you have done?
:
I need your input on this one and then I will tell you what I did as a Thought From a Road Scholar!

Quote:Dude! You should have definitely said hello in Boone. In Greensboro, maybe not so much, unless Bruce had seen you and waved again, perhaps recognizing you.August 8, 2007 at 4:50 pm #29080Victor
ParticipantDavid, I should be able to give my answer, so long as I don’t ruin your story!
I would have harrassed Bruce at every opportunity, truly earning that “stalker” label. If I’d run into him before the Boone show, I would have invited him to come sit around the campfire at the Honey Bear Campground and enjoy himself a “s’more” after the show.

ParticipantI must of had a “senior moment”! 😆 The brain damage must have kicked in again! 😆 Like Vic, Treah (Jackie) and Carey knows how I responded also. Therefore, they can only say what they would have done and not reveal what happened.
What did happen?
How would a true Road Scholar respond? What would you have done?

If Bruce and I had made eye contact, I probably would have smiled, given a little wave and left him to read his paper. I’m not one to go up to people and start a conversation because I’m terrible at small talk!

Get the picture!
I walk into this sports bar and nobody is there. It’s Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, NC. The barkeep yells out, “How are you doing?”. I look over to the right of the bar thinking a booth might be the best place to hang out. And there he is. Less than ten feet from me. It’s Bruce!
Bruce starts to rustle his Sunday paper as he turns the page.
What do I do? My brain turned into warp speed! I’m torn in many directions! What do I do? What would you have done?

ParticipantDavid,
I am not sure what I would have done either. I would have had a hard time letting this opportunity pass by so I guess that I would have gotten the nerve to go to Bruce and say “Hi” and probably something about the show in Greensboro and the upcoming show in Boone. After that, if it looked like he didn’t want to be bothered, I would have probably left it at that. I don’t think that I would have asked for an autograph. From what I have seen in the past though, Bruce is a very cool
, non-celeb ego kind of guy and not have gotten ticked off at you saying “hi”.
I am interested in what did happen though so don’t keep us in suspense too long…

Oh, the pressure……
I would’ve tried to be as nonchalant as possible, and walked like I was gonna go right by him. When I got to where he was, I would’ve acted like I had no idea who he was, tipped my head at him, and said “Yo, man… How ’bout them Mets?”

I was trying to give you was a “southern slag” thing. In other words, “Come on Rich”! Instead, I gave you a Patois thing. In Patois, that would be “Common Mon!”
(Come on man!)
Sorry about that! Please don’t take that as an insult! It was my attempt to get you fired up and respond. That it did!

I’m very proud to be Common Rich!!! I mean, there’s that killer Copland fanfare thing, and then the whole political side to it that kinda strikes a nice chord (Eb7#9, I think). I look forward to our exchanges in this forum. I’m impressed that you are willing to incite me and be incited by me in these brief forays across the line of comedy that they call “normal.” Speaking of which… wasn’t Patois the chick in Peanuts who wore the sandals and had the other girl who called he “sir”? This could be a clue in interpreting the dream. It could be that you have an overwhelming fixation with the art of the late Charles Schulz. Hmm… You may have given me very valuable guidance.

You heard the man… let’s give the man something for his honest, heartfelt and continuous (albeit somewhat on the lukewarm side) begging!!! Step on up to the challenge! The only request I have is that none of you guys out there say that you’d make the necessary wardrobe adjustments such that you do a “trouser elephant” and whistle Dixie as you walk by.

ParticipantOkay, first of all I own the title of Bruce Stalker.
If in doubt, reference any of the Biltmo’ shows, or any show within 200 miles of Hooterville, NC. Or ask me about the time his mom called me AT HOME at 7:00 in the morning to tell me she was helping to sponsor me to attend the Williamsburg Teacher’s Institute. Or ask me about having lunch with at the Blue Talon, then attending the opening of “Macbeth” at the Virginia Shakespeare Festival with the same aforementioned mom. OR let me tell you about meeting Bruce backstage after EVERY concert (no, not like Superfreak. Darn it) except W&M Hall in 89-90, and the Portsmouth show that almost blew everybody off the stage. Even met Jon after the show in Richmond, and felt honored to be able to tell him in person how much the lyrics to “Mandolin Rain” mean to me. Or ask me about my T-shirt that reads “Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers Road Crew…no, I can’t get you backstage; no, I can’t turnthe sound down; and no, I don’t know where the bathrooms are” (and this was one of the old ones, not those newfangled ones you can get on the website). Oh, and items that I currently own, signed by BH and the NM: a teddy bear’s T-shirt (with Teddy Bear inside), the CD insert(s) from Halcyon Days forward (even RS and Bobby at the Biltmo”), my coveted hat with BH and Ricky Skaggs signatures, a BH & RS poster signed by the gentlemen themselves, plus the rest of “Kentucky Thunder” that was supposed to be a present for DPD, but it didn’t survive the wreck (sorry!), AND the promo postcards from Big Swing Face on, signed by BR. Oh, and a picture of me, BH, and DPD.
now THAT’S stalkin’ done right!!!!….now, what was the question????? Oh, yeah, what should David have done????? He should have gotten down on his knees, crawled over to Bruce, kissed his feet, and AGAIN asked forgiveness for the Greenville, SC show!!!!!! At least, if I had been there, holding the leash, that’s what he would have done!!!!

ParticipantOK, it’s probably time to settle this one! 😆
What did I do? I was very confused!
I was very shocked! 😯 I was very surprised! 😮
I had to ask myself, “What would a true Road Scholar do?”
There was so many thoughts that entered my brain! So very many emotions that I felt!
Then it hit me, “What would you want if you were Bruce?”
The answer was very clear!
“Let the man read his Sunday paper!”
I walked out into the parking lot and called Vic.
As Vic’s cell faded into the mountains, I understood Vic (one of our Global moderators) to advise me that I had done the wrong thing.
I drove to Guilford College and watched as Bruce’s sound crew was setting up in this beautiful auditorium, which had to be their old Chapel and wondered, “Did I do the right thing?”
Then it hit me again, “Let the man read his Sunday paper!?
So I did!
David Day
Lake Lanier, GAPS What do you think Vic advised me to do?
: Did I do the right thing?
: Obviously, I didn’t live up to being a “stalker”!

ParticipantCreepily ironic, Trent. That’s exactly the advice I gave David:
I said, “Why bother Bruce in a restaurant when you can go home to your computer and stare down onto his Williamsburg home via the giant, godlike eye of a satellite circling the heavens?”
I’m not even going to ask how you knew where to find that.
Nice spread, though. Where’s the basketball court?
September 17, 2007 at 3:29 pm #29099PixelPusher
ParticipantTrent, that is very scary! I don’t think that Bruce would take very kindly to my walking up to his front door and ringing the bell. 😯
David,
I guess that I probably would have done the same thing that you did. My brain would have said that if he didn’t want to be bothered, he would have been hanging out in a public place. But I would have ended up respecting his privacy and left him alone unless he looked up and then I might have said “hi”. I am sure that he would have enjoyed talking to a true road scholar like yourself.
Peace,
Larry

But, since I wasn’t, a true Road Scholar would let Bruce read his Sunday paper!
So I did!
