Participantfrom a press release:
“WBGO Jazz88.3FM and WBGO.ORG will broadcast the climax of the festival on Saturday Afternoon Jazz with Monifa Brown, Saturday Aug. 25 from2 – 6pm. Brown will host live broadcasts of jazz piano phenom, Eldar (2pm), jazz and R&B vocalist Deborah Cox (3pm), drummer Carl Allen and bassist Rodney Whitaker (4pm) and pop [pop?] pianist Bruce Hornsby with jazz greats Jack DeJohnette and Christian McBride (5pm).”
Anyone going to record this (even over the web?) I’ll be out of town over the weekend or else I would…

ParticipantI went to the gig, but didn’t record it. Great show, and FREE! I got to stand right up front. WBGO has always been one of my favorite stations in the area. There were probably about 200 gathered around the stage area. The music filled City Hall Park and filled the whole area with great sound. You could hear Bruce’s piano crystal clear blocks away, on the steets of downtown Manhattan. The nearby buildings probably made for good acoustics.
I also got to check out the Carl Allen & Rodney Whittaker project just before Bruce/Christian/Jack. I immediately went to J&R after the gig and got their CD too. Highly recommended – great gospel and Motown tunes done in a jazz context.

ParticipantI attended the show, and set my computer at home to record the broadcast. The problem is that they hit the stage 45 minutes late, so I only captured the first 45 minutes of their set. If anyone has the entire recording please post here!

ParticipantI was at the gig as well – what a great performance! Bruce was really in top form – having a clearly wonderful time. I’m sure that this group is such a breath of fresh air for him, in the midst of the gigs with Skaggs. I know those have gotten kind of old for me, and I’ve only seen a few of them. I can’t imagine Bruce having to play to/with the same schtick every show…..
Killer music on a sweltering hot day – well worth the sweat!
(ps – on a funny note, while inside J&R, Kat (sunflower Kat) tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Hey, Elyce, you’re on the wall at J&R!” – pointing to a photo of Bruce from a signing at J&R that was clearly from when Here Come the Noismakers came out – in the photo is the promo poster for the cd right behind Bruce! ….ah, her 15 minutes of fame continue….

ParticipantSpeaking of hot, the Jack DeJohnette drum solo was pretty smoking in my opinion.

ParticipantMost of Jack’s solos are amazing…but honestly all three of them were great. I had no idea McBride has the mad beatbox skills! I particularly enjoyed Poco Loco, it was a great groove. I wish I’d recorded the broadcast

ParticipantElyce, I love you — you’re a special ed teacher, so you’re a giving person — and judging by your Pen Pic, you’ve survived a broken neck(!) But I have to place myself in the position of Defender of Ricky Skaggs again.
I feel it’s unfair to categorize the Skaggs/Thunder shows as “the same schtick every time,” and I sincerely doubt Bruce thinks so, or else he wouldn’t have scheduled so many of those gigs. Bluegrass is as improvisational as jazz any day of the week, and Skagg’s band is a top-notch group of musicians.
Just because it doesn’t suit your tastes is no need to diminish its artistry. I wouldn’t do that with the jazz stuff.
That is all.

ParticipantWell said, and it couldn’t be more true. Thanks Victor!

What would a true Road Scholar do? Especially between the ranks of other “Road Scholars”. Conflict between some Road Scholars?
No way! But, just maybe there is a way to have some “reconciliation” between the ranks.
On one hand there is “Camp Meeting” the new jazz CD. On the other hand, there is the Ricky Skaggs bluesgrass thang!(Another southern expression!)
It was bound to happen! The Bruce Heads divided into two camps!
Sounds like some good debate material!

ParticipantDon’t put me in either camp, David! I love the new jazz CD and the bluegrass CD equally…I just believe that the musicianship and improvisatory nature of both kinds of music are equally wonderful!! My thing? It’s ALL good, because it’s ALL Bruce…He obviously doesn’t take sides, why would I?? It’s music. There ARE no sides….

I didn’t put you in either camp at all!
I think it’s great that there are “two camps” forming!
It just means some great music and some great debate in the works!

Now, now Vic…. I’m feeling the love, no worries. I didn’t mean to insult. Please accept my apologies for any inconsiderations… I totally dig bluegrass music – have enjoyed it for a long time, but I just have found that by the time I saw my third show with Bruce and Ricky, I felt like I could join in and help tell the stories and like there weren’t any surprises left. I prefer to be caught off guard. I encourage people to see Bruce and Ricky play at least once because it’s a great show. I don’t think I would hit up a whole leg of a tour, though. Hell it was the same with The Sensitive Ones tour a while back. Bonnie Raitt and Shawn Colvin are two of my favorites, but I know that all the shows the did were pretty much the same, so I would not have wanted to see a whole slew of them. Contrast that with Bruce solo, or Bruce with Bela Fleck, or Bruce and his boys (meaning JV, JT, Sonny, Doug and Bobby… not Keith and Russel)… I could see them play every night and remain 100% attentive for every moment. Those are shows that are always changing, always different, you never know where they will go… I mean – truth be told, Bruce is far more improvisational than the Dead were (and Dead tour is where I got my “training). There is never a dull moment.
Ricky far from sucks. You are right – Bruce would not have signed on with him if he did. I just wish he would loosen up a little bit and “go with it” a little more.
It’s all good…. stay well.
