I was listening to a jazz station on the radio a couple of nights ago and happened upon something interesting. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan fame were discussing some of their jazz influences and favorite jazz musicians.

Donald Fagen said he had been a jazz fan since the age of 10; he used to get older friends to take him to jazz clubs in New York when he was a minor. He named Red Garland as one of his early piano influences.

Mr. Fagen told a fascinating story about the similarity between Rikki Don’t Lose That Number and the Horace Silver piece Song For My Father. (The two songs resemblance is purely coincidental.)

Walter Becker didn’t share a lot of stories during the broadcast, but he demonstrated his appreciation for artists such as Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus, Count Basie, Lee Konitz, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane.

I was WAYYYY into the Dan (heh, not the other way around, fortunately…pun intended 😆 ) in high school. Since then, however, my appreciation for them just hasn’t been the same.

IMHO, they are the Rush of the jazzish pop scene. And they almost fit Bruce’s description of a ‘nostalgia band’ perfectly, new albums or not. IMHO again, and no offense to any of y’all who be still entranced by the Dan.
