ParticipantHI All
Well we have finally done it, I have tickets for the Tampa concert and we are travelling all the way from the UK.
We have only see the great man once before, the solo show at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London where Laura (only 10) was invited up on stage for spider fingers. Shes now 14 and looking forward to this years concert
I am trying to work it out and I think that its GA ( no seats) but where in the Hardrock Tampa?? has anybody been there before.
As its our first noise makers show, what would you request if it were your first noisemakers show,
Cheers, Bye for now Phil ( Lauras Dad)

ParticipantWOW! We may need to amend the rules for Road Scholar of the Year or Road Warrior of the Year for you guys!
Tampa is on the west coast of Florida not in Georgia. Your cheapest flights would be thru Atlanta, GA or Miami, FL with a connection to Tampa.
Hardrock Cafe is on the northeast side of Tampa not too far from the airport going towards Orlando, FL. It right near Bush Gardens, something you should check out if you can! Also, it is about an hour from Disney World and Epcot! You need to plan on staying another week if you can!
You are also right by the Gulf of Mexico, but will be cool that time of year.
At the Hardrock, the shows are in the ballroom and it’s general admission. You should get there early if you can.
For a good map, go to brucehornsby.com, click on the show and click on the map.
You could make this Lauras’s best vacation ever.If you happen not to be doing anything on January 1, the Georgia DAWGS are playing (American football) the mighty Michigan State Spartans in Orlando at the Capital One Bowl. Go DAWGS!

ParticipantThanks for the pictures SI , thats very good of you, a great reminder, Thanks again
And thanks also Dave, for all your hints of places to go I think we have to go to Bush Gardens may be on the same day as the show. we are staying a week in Florida anyway, I am though, confused as to why Michigan State would play a Georgia team in Florida, but then we are from Cornwall where we have no football teams either american or any other type
Finally we are also fans of the Dave Rich Band, who are very local to us in Cornwall and Dave if your reading this the whole family came to your show at the millenium Hall in Pensilva, last year.
Thanks again for the response

ParticipantPhil —
If I may butt in
— a few thoughts from a Tampa native (Tampan? 😆 ) now sequestered in southeast VT…
(Hey Dave, I think that by ‘GA’ Phil meant ‘general admission,’ NOT Georgia…
)
Here’s a basic overview to enjoying other things in the area —
Try Ybor City, for food and drink (happens to be close to the concert venue). Yes, if you must, go to Busch (not ‘Bush’) Gardens, but it’s expensive (consider the season pass). For the sun and fun, avoid the Clearwater beaches, try St. Pete’s instead — the water might not be THAT cold (plus, you get used to it pretty quick!)….
Back to food, I’m trying to think of some decent restaurants: Sukhothai (Thai), Joto and Ichiban (sushi), the former in South Tampa, the latter in North T…used to be a few Brit-style pubs in So. T, and there were at least 2 Irish pubs in the aforementioned Ybor City area.
If you have any other questions, post here or e-mail me off board…I’d be glad to answer any queries. I grew up there, went to ‘university’ (heh) there, worked/played etc etc until I was 30, so I should be able to help you…I could even suggest some people to see
We still get back frequently (to go see Red Sox v. Rays games at the Tropicana Dome, family in the area, friends etc).
Enjoy the show, and the Tampa region! (I’m jealous…we won’t be able to go to Tampa until Jan. at the earliest….)
However, I can’t help you with your American football issues…I’ve got no idea re. the esoterica of deciding which locale and location collegiate ‘football’ is played

ParticipantMissed the bit about requests at your first Noisemakers show…(I just had ‘my first’ this past summer at Lowell
)
I dare you to stand up and scream “Bruuuuuuuuuce….’Jack Straw,’ dude!!!” 😆

Trey, you can butt in any time you want!

ParticipantI’m hoping to make the Tampa show in a couple of days myself! Since it’s general admission, I hope it doesn’t sell out before I can get there… I don’t want to buy tickets in advance since we’re driving down from Columbia, SC the day of the show, and I would hate to buy tickets and then have traffic/car/wife/whatever trouble and miss the show.
We’re actually headed to Tampa for the Outback Bowl – but seeing this concert on the tour list gave me added incentive to make the trip. To answer the OP’s question about why football teams would meet in a distant location – these are “bowl games” that occur after the regular season. The matchups are of teams that have winning records in their regular season, and are basically a reward to the players and fans – so we try to have them in nice loactions. These games also have the added benefit of giving the team and university national television exposure which helps with recruiting – as well as giving the team extra practice sessions. You may also hear “BCS Bowl Games” mentioned, which are a set of higher caliber games… with the top one deciding the national champion.
Back to Bruce – I have been a fan since the late 80’s, but my only other concert was in Boulder Ft. Collins, CO in August of ’07 – which was an outdoor event and got rained out two or three songs into the show! I was not happy, especially since I was only a few “rows” back in the standing room only crowd, having camped out there for several artists before Bruce took the stage!

I’ll probably end up with one extra tic if that will help. If so, shoot me an e-mail.
You sure you don’t want to slip over to the Capital One Bowl and see the DAWGS? Go DAWGS!

ParticipantDavid Day wrote:You sure you don’t want to slip over to the Capital One Bowl and see the DAWGS? Go DAWGS!Hi David! I hope you enjoyed the concert. Between a little traffic issue trying to get back across the bay from Safety Harbor, and a 30 minute “discussion” with the hotel manager about a daily resort fee we weren’t informed about at booking – we didn’t arrive at the Hard Rock Casino until about 8:50 this evening. So I have once again been at the gates of the promised land and denied… Honestly, I didn’t feel like spending $120 for $80 of remaining concert time… So assuming Bruce doesn’t retire or go down in a firey plane crash before I can make it to a full show, I will be there someday… I just hope he schedules something with The Noisemakers somewhere in my general area this year. As much as I’m sure I would enjoy a solo show, I think the full band would be better.
I’m pretty bummed about the whole thing since I got up at the crack of dawn to get on the road early to get there in plenty of time for good seats… but I-95 traffic, hotel managers, and GPS systems that don’t deal well with construction issues can ruin the best laid plans. 😡 Bourbon helps though…
Oh, and once a year is enough of your Dawgs, but I’ll be pulling for SEC dominance in all of the bowl games.

Sounds like a horrible experience there, Heath. Sorry you missed the show. I guess we’ll have to wait for Mr. Day to get back from sunny FL to get his review of the show. I’m sure Bruce will be somewhere near you in the coming year, and hopefully for your sake it’s a Noisemakers show.

ParticipantOh Heath…
I’m reading your post completely devastated for you. I cannot imagine being THAT close…and not making it in the door. I would have lost my mind.
Fortunately, Bruce shows no signs of retiring….and please, let’s not hear one more peep about f***y c****es.
While the band shows are incredible, I would encourage you not to pass on a solo show if there’s one near you. No, it’s not the band…but it’ pure completely, freeflowing Bruce. I promise, you will not be disappointed.
Wishing you another opportunity asap….AND the best seat in the house.

ParticipantI have to agree with Kat. Seeing a Noisemakers gig is electric, an “experience” if you will, but having seen a solo Bruce show as well, I can tell you that he is just as comfortable solo as he is with a full backing band. If you see him at the right venue it can almost be like he is performing in your living room just for you. IMO, if you see Bruce solo at a small theater with a balcony, get the first row of the balcony over the first row or three down front. The piano is usually up too close that you can’t see much of Bruce’s “handy” work. He is by far my favorite live performer and no matter where it is or who he’s with it is always worth the price of admission–and then some!
Happy New Year!

Sorry to hear of your troubles, Heath. I once went to see Josh Dodes play in New York (okay, that wasn’t the reason for a trip from the UK, but it sure was a bonus)… only to be refused entry at the door as I had no ID!
After a round trip to the hotel, I probably caught his last twenty minutes on stage… but I’m sure your opportunity to catch BH and co will come around again soon. When it does, it’ll be all the more sweeter.

ParticipantHello. This is my first post on the board. I was surprised no one had put up the Tampa setlist. I won’t give you the setlist, but I’ll give you an incomplete list of songs Bruce did in Tampa from memory and not necessarily in order. First of all, it was a bit different from the other shows I’ve either attended or own. Bruce said he was limited by the casino to 90 minutes, it was a general admission show with 400 chairs set up in a ballroom directly off the casino floor, and he did no solo piano. Definitely the smallest, strangest venue I’ve seen Bruce in. Also, Sonny Emory did not play drums. I must have missed this announcement. Not sure if new drummer is permanent or what the deal is, but no Sonny. There also was no intermission. I attended the show with someone who knew nothing about Bruce (other than The Way it Is) and I would say this show was as tight as any I’ve heard or seen recently from an improvisational standpoint. List of songs to the best I can remember: Gonna Be Some Changes Made, Every Little Kiss, The “Tin Cup” song (Big Stick? forget name of that song), King of the Hill, Tango King, End of the Innocence>Fields of Gray (which he said he’d never done those together like that), Standing on the Moon, The Way It Is. The encore was Big Rumble and Mandolin Rain. I’m definitely missing a few, but I thought that might help some of you a little bit. Overall, I loved the show, but then again I always do. I’d be curious to hear from other fans at the show. Also, any update on Sonny (I’ll check the official site) would be great. I thought it was a great show and Bruce said the band would be very busy in 2009. I got to see Bruce three times in 2008 and hope for more than that in the coming year. Hope this helps

Participantcdnorton,
Thank you.
Maybe Sonny was doing his Bette Midler gig.January 2, 2009 at 2:28 am #30501Takavl
ParticipantThanks CD, for the review…interesting that Sonny wasn’t there…
The 90min. bit sounds constricting, fo’ sho’….
And Bruce saying he had never done “Innocence>Fields” is correct in a technical sense…the MunckMix boot of Portland ’05 has a “Fields>Innocence.”
I would’ve loved to’ve seen this somewhat strange show in my hometown, but no matter how I tried, the earliest we’ll be able to get down (GET DOWN!) Tampa-way will be in a couple of weeks….
Anyone else have a review that they can add to CD’s?

ParticipantLooks like it was a fantastic setlist! Sounds like a very unique location for a show–right off the casino floor? I wonder if between songs you could still hear the *tink-tink-tink-tink-tink-tink* of the slot machines going off in the background? I’m also curious as to why a casino would have a time limit for a show. I guess they don’t want to keep their patrons away from the tables for too long! I’d love to know who the drummer was for the set. My man Molo, perhaps? That would be classic!
As a “Si”de note, the main page of Bruuuce.com looks unbelievable. Kudos to Si for all his hard work. ’09 is now officially “The Year of Bruuuce”!!

ParticipantThe drummer definitely wasn’t Molo, I know the drummers fairly well being a drummer myself. Like Sonny, he was African-American and it was funny because for half of the first song I though “sonny’s wearing glasses” then I realized it wasn’t sonny. anyway, he was great, but I’d love to know who it was. Bruce mentioned his name a couple times but it was hard to catch. A different drummer is something Bruce would usually call attention to, but he didn’t, although in watching the dynamic for the show between Bruce and the drummer Bruce did seem to lead him along more so than usual with a lot of eye contact and hand gestures. gotta be tough to be a new member of the noisemakers and follow Bruce’s lead for only the first or second time.

The answer to your drummer question may lie on the inside cover of BSF.
More to come another time.
