A DVD with a 3-minute interview with Bruce from 1989 is currently shared at Lossless Legs. Bruce’s songwriting as well as his rat tail he had at the time are discussed there.

Ah yes, the rat tail! Or as BH called it (if I remember correctly, on one of the Munck shows): “that damn lil’ Slinky”…. 😆

In his defense, not that it’s much of one…but many peeps had them back “in the day,” which seemed to run from about 1982 to 1988 or so. Mostly new wavers and skate rats and soccer jocks, at least in my part of (my native) north Tampa area. And Neil Peart. And oh yeah, BH! :D

I never had one. No, really. I did have a vile and hideous spike, though 😳

What’s more interesting, the rat tail or the songwriting? ;)

Yes, the interviewer asked him how he called it, and he answered, as you remember, “slinky”.
    Regarding songwriting:
The first question of the interview was maybe what people are focusing the most on Bruce’s music, and Bruce answered that it is the piano and the lyrics. Bruce and his brother John are tough critics of each other’s work and they try their lyrics to look good on the paper. Bruce thought The Way It Is would be a B side of some single. It was a fluke that it became such a hit. He compares it to the success of Tracy Chapman and Suzanne Vega. The interviewer asked him about the possibility of loosing one’s edge when trying to get a record deal. Bruce said that getting his record contract was the most difficult thing, and loosing the edge is a possible problem, but he is not writing his songs to make money but to write about things he believes in or to express certain musical ideas. After that they talked about that “slinky”.

I actually bought Bruce’s ‘slinky’ on eBay a few years ago for $31.
I was in a bidding war with rattailcollector007 and I won.
I have it framed in my office.
    Its a great conversation piece.

Maybe someday I’ll get him to autograph it :)

I didn’t know that Bruce gave his slinky to the public. Has he sold it for the charity or something?

By the way, a little interview from 2004 European tour is now on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG67HkLTBn0
