ParticipantWell, (deep subject), it’s time! It’s time to give some thoughts on this one.
On the onset, I will say that I don’t know yet what my fav is…..but, I do know which song I’m tending more too. The record is different and there is no standout “two hand independence”, but there are some very unique songs and the Noisemakers do “shine” on differnt songs on different occasions that makes it very creative and very interesting! (Another thought for another time.)
The song I’m “tending more too” at the moment, is not the song that will probably be my favorite, and as far as I know, there has not been much talk about it. If you are a “Spirit Trail freak” you will like this one! It’s “In the Low County”. And, it reminds me of a Tango King “type song” or Lost in the Snow “type song” from the standpoint that it just has a little different “feel” (and beat) for it than all the rest of the songs on their respective records.
Low Country would be great in a show! Bruce does tempt us with a little “meandering” on the piano on the record and could really “take off” if he wanted to at a show! Low Country, to me, wins the “best piano” award on the record.
Check it out! Let me know what you think! I think you will really like this one!

ParticipantI’m really warming up to Space is the Place! Is this the best song on the record? I dunno yet, but it sure reminds me of something else from another time. 💡 What do you think?

ParticipantI’m gonna give my opinion on this one. Just in order of my favorites.
“Simple Prayer”…just catchy melody on this one and cute song.
“Paperboy”…yes I am into dark, but funny and cute horror..specially in October. I love Halloween..nothing to scary, but just fun and sorta gross like the song. Coming up with a good request for this one when I see the show in Dallas…sorry can’t give this one away..keeping my art a secret this time. I’ll give pictures after the show.
Those two seem to be my most played…although I love everything. I’ve always found it hard to just pick favorites when it comes to Bruce, but I did on this album.
“Space is the Place” has caught on with my kiddo’s they love to dance to it.
Thats just my view!!

ParticipantFirst off I must point out that I noticed that the sound quality on this album isn’t the greatest, but this is a good album with only a couple of fillers.
So far my favorite track is ‘Paperboy’, this totally sounds like a Beatles song.
Cyclone and Invisible are my other favs. Cant wait to hear them live, hopefully Sunday.

ParticipantYeah, Paperboy has that Beatlish sound to it, in the sound they used in the “psychedelic” era (between Revolver and The White Album) sound, replete with the heavy use of dominant 7th chords. The lyrics are wonderfully fitting with what I would imagine the concept behind something named such that is phonetically synonymous with “sick bastard” would be. As such, I’m kind excited about what farcical insanity might lie in the Bruce Hornsby/Chip DeMatteo theatrical production that is in the offing.
Right now, I’m digging on Cyclone big time, although Continents Drift ( wonderful song to crank in the car at a stoplight with the windows down), Paperboy and a few others are keeping pace with it. Overall, it’s a solid album, and an infectiously likeable one at that. This one has a long future in the CD/MP3 rotation.

KeymasterBeat me to it in another thread; I heard the Beatles all over Paperboy.
I thought the back end of Michael Raphael was Beach Boys/Brian Wilson also.
Cyclone has come out of nowhere as my favourite after a month of listening to the record. I hope for more collaborations with Hunter.

I have this sneaking suspicion that Bruce on the cusp of another of his “I’m starting to get bored and am looking for something new and different to do” phases, and so I think we can expect all sorts of interesting collaborations as he reenergizes his creative juices. One thing he has always done is found ways to recreate himself artistically, whether it’s trying out different musical styles, changing up his setlists every night, or finding new collaborators (i.e. his brother John, Robert Hunter, Chip DeMatteo, etc.). He’s probably his own most fickle fan.

Warm Gun? (Especially in the Beatles verse which begins with:
“The man in the crowd with the multicolored mirrors…”)?
Topic #2: Impressions of the album so far- Invisible is my favorite song at the moment, followed closely by Cyclone and Prairie Dog Town.
When listening to Continents Drift, I’m overcome with bittersweet feelings; I’m sure the “bitter’ will soon disappear & that will make the “sweet” even better.
Michael Raphael & Simple Prayer-Although I realize Bruce wrote these with a light, tongue in cheek tone, I’ve found some food for thought here.

ParticipantI dont do much posting (any) but quite a bit of reading… why I am changing now I have no idea, I suppose I am going to paint with the colors I’ve got.
I have been follow BH since before The Way It Is came out when one of our local radio stations started playing his stuff to pump up an appearance at a local festival. Now many years later I am going to my 20th show next week in Detroit. I am just as pumped as I was for the first, second, third…
My favorite new song easily is Cyclone. No other one comes close. Sure I like some more than others, but there is just something in Cyclone that captivates me.

Don’t be “bashful”! (Maybe the infamous MVF can correct me if I misspelled that wrong!)

ParticipantThanks DD! I plan to participate more for sure.
I had a rough day at work the other night (3rd shift Registered Nurse) and I jammed to Levitate all the way home. That was the first time that I really sat back and deeply listened to that tune. It is growing on me and more importantly, turned my dark mood around. BH always knows how to do that!

Lake Lanier, GANope, you got it right….. although we won’t go into “misspelled that wrong”…..
Sorry it’s been so long between posts. I’ve been spending most of my time either at the unemployment office or out on interviews.
By far, “Black Rats” is my fav, followed closely (no pun intended) by “Prairie Dog”. Anybody out there see any similarities between “Paperboy” and the MAX show “Dexter”???????

ParticipantQuote:Anybody out there see any similarities between “Paperboy” and the MAX show “Dexter”???????Actually thats funny you mention that. That’s actually one of the series my husband and I watch and that is what I thought the first time after hearing the song. My request I’m doing for Dallas is a bit on the Dexter side. I”ll take pictures and make sure to share!!

ParticipantOn my screen porch this evening drinking a Long Tall Cool One!
It’s a rainy night in Georgia!
Listening to Levitate! Trying to find a song that’s in my head. Can’t remember the name of it, but maybe you can help?
Has something to do with “time to get a buzz on” and some form of “specialized skills” and hunting “turkey” and “squirrel”.
I couldn’t help but think ❗ …..Have we not talked about the “Hornsby Cookbook” and BBQ squirrel before? At that time, it was unanimous that BBQ squirrel would be SMP’s favorite! 😆
Trying to find that song! Can anyone help me find that song? It’s a great song! Some nice sax in it from Bobby! What is the name of that song?

Lake Lanier, GASure… you take you basic C chord, for instance. In its’ most simple voicing, you’d play a C, the E above it (the third), a G above it (the fifth), and the next C above it (the octave). If you take the C on top, and drop it down a whole step to a B-flat, you have your standard dominant 7th chord. It gives the chord a whole new sound while retaining the basic tonal center. Along with a lot of other rock writers, the Beatles did a ton of this in their music, which is why I made that particular connection. Try it out on a piano or guitar, David. It’s hard to explain the change that putting that 7th on the chord makes, but it gives it a hip kind of edge to it.

ParticipantI really like here we are again and continents drift.
Space is the place would be alot better IF THE WHOLE RECORD WASNT SO DAMN LOUD!
then the groove would stand out more as it could pump a little.
Kind regards

Would always “bar” an E and do it. Would be interesting to know how daverich does it on guitar!
Or, any other guitar player.

Lake Lanier, GAI dont play them often (I’m not fond of the sound of a 7th,-*love* Major/Minor 7ths though) – but when I do I generally cheat and just play 3 or 4 of the notes – like the cheats B7 – which is 021200 and just play the fingered notes.
Kind regards
