Encore: Standing on the Moon > Halcyon DaysI’ve seen Hornsby plenty of times (too numerous to mention) and this was without a doubt one of the most emotional shows I’ve been to. The spirit of R.S. Hornsby was certainly in the building tonight as Bruce and the Noisemakers played with emotion and conviction. Bruce joked at one point how R.S. loved VT so much that when he went to UVM he crammed “4 years into 6”. Playing songs that R.S. loved to play when he toured with the Noisemakers in this area only made the night more special. Standouts? There were plenty. Bobby Read all night was a BEAST!! Bruce gave him an extended solo on Tango King; and he shook the Flynn to its core on Funhouse. Doug Derryberry did an incredible job on the guitar solo for Continents Drift that had many in the audience near tears as you could only imagine RS playing that part as on the recording. JV and Sonny had their part to play on a nice little solo during Pete & Manny.
It should also be noted that the new album was highlighted and was great to hear in a live setting. Levitate was a standout for me as this number seemed to really lift off in concert. Prarie Dog Town is just plain fun, and Continents Drift takes you off to another planet. Nice to hear so much NEW stuff.
If you came to dance, you were at the wrong show tonight; but the musicianship was (to say the least) spectacular. The last time Bruce played the Flynn was back in Oct. 2004; and for those of his fans from this area, we only have one thing to ask: don’t make us wait this long again! Five years is too long to wait for such a fine performance!!
Finally, the Woods Brothers opened the show and played for approx. 45 minutes. If you’ve never heard these two guys play — do yourself a favor and pick up a CD. In a word: they were “excellent”.
Another great performance, Bruce! Thanks once again for re-energizing my battery.
