ParticipantA question for the Bruce historians….
Recently I found a vinyl copy of The Way It Is. It was a nice Japanese import. I’m a DJ at a college radio station and sometimes I like to do shows where I play nothing but vinyl. The other night I brought my new Bruce acquisition down to the station. I had yet to listen to it at home. When I was doing my show I cued up my favorite track on the album, “The River Runs Low”. When I hit the play button on the turntable, my jaw dropped. A completely different version of the song that I had never heard began to play. This version had the full band on it with guitar, a drum track and harmony vocals.
Now I know that when the album was first released in the USA, it had an alternate cover but I had never heard anything about there being differences in the music. So I’m wondering, is this alternate version of “The River Runs Low” exclusive to the Japanese LP or was it on those original USA pressings as well? The Japanese LP that I have does not have the original artwork, it has the more familiar artwork.

ParticipantWHERE did you find a vinyl copy??? I have it on original cassette. Now you’ve got me curious and I’ll have to go dig it out and do a relook/relisten. We may have to do some comparisons…

ParticipantI found it on eBay. I go there to find Japanese import LPs. Japanese pressings usually sounded better than American ones. I was only buying it just to have the best quality possible vinyl pressing of the LP, then I found that nice little surprise towards the end of side 2.

ParticipantHey privateuniverse!
Great find and great ears!
You’re right! Check the date of that record. That will tell you the story. There’s more like that out there…..Keep up the good work!
Can’t help but ask…..Is “privateuniverse” the same as “livin’ in your own private Idado”? 😆
Still havin’ a ball!

ParticipantI played it on the air again last night. You can hear it in the latest episode of my iTunes podcast which is here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/choc … d311536521
It’s episode #214. It comes on around the 63 minute mark.February 23, 2011 at 3:58 am #32114JC
ParticipantThe full band version can also be found on the US pressing of the CD that has the alternate artwork.
It’ll occasionally pop up for sale on eBay. That’s where I scored my copy a couple of years back.

ParticipantThere’s a second song that has a different mix that highlights Huey Lewis a bit more, I think it’s Red Plains but not entirely sure. My copy of the “accordion man” version is framed and autographed, so I tend not to play it that often. When I got it signed, Bruce asked “how in the hell did you get this?” $2 dollars at a used music store.
