ParticipantA night worth waiting for. . . the man and his piano, a much talked about play, never before heard music and all taking place in a National Historic Theater that has been in its different incarnations since its beginning in 1913- a vaudeville venue, a soft porn theater and the home of the Virginia Stage Company . . . right in the heart of Norfolk, Virginia!!!
Bruce Hornsby plays the music of SCKBSTD- what a night, Bruce was indeed at his best yet again and truly showed one and all that he hasn’t been doing much resting since taking “a break” from touring with the Noisemakers- because Bruce is of course always striving to take not only his career to another level but all of us on a musical journey from the many memorable concerts throughout the years to the unfamiliar, but exciting hot lights of a theatrical stage- with 19 songs that wowed the crowd . . . some familiar, some brand new, and some sang with such heart and emotion you can learn to appreciate them in a whole new way . . . that is how I would describe this night!
A little different from your normal Bruce show, not much improv (meaning blending of songs- because of course he is introducing the songs of SCKBSTD, and not playing an all out concert full of request, etc.) that we are all used to, he also used alot of music sheets because of course this is a play but all in all- extremely powerful and songs that speak to you- with careful, creative and playful tunes- and songs that seem to have had Bruce and childhood friend Chip DeMatteo quite busy working together helping to take this locally grown play to the masses and one that will hopefully be one that will keep you and the critics talking across the country!
OKAY, ENOUGH TALKING and ON WITH THE SHOW . . .
19 SONGS, count them all 19 . . . although one of them didn’t make the cut Bruce played it anyway because HE liked it!!! **NEW SONGS, also please note the comments here are my opinion, you of course may have yours! Just trying to give you a feel for the night
Virginia Stage Company at the Wells Theater
Norfolk, Virginia
8:00PM
1 hour 40 minutes1) In the Low Country (Bruce says that it sets the scene of the play)
2) **Big Fish in This Pond (a great new song, with great lyrics- Bruce says a character that resembles him) His music sheets for this song fell right in the middle of the song, and he had end the song short, pick up his music and then played the rest of it- audience got a kick out this!
3) **Holy Trinity- a song focusing on some of the characters in the play- the FED EX Man, The UPS Man, and the Postal Delivery Man- great lyrics!
4) **Who Takes Care of Mom- a song debuted at the ALS Benefit in Virginia Beach in September- a song about good ole mom- “who keeps them happy, who keeps them fed, who makes the lunches, who makes the bed, who? who, who takes care of mom!” Great song!
5) Black Rats of London- Bruce takes this to a whole new place singing and playing it solo- like he said to the audience probably will never be heard or played like that again! Cool version
6)The Don of Dons- Bruce explained to the audience how he was at Knicks game with Spike Lee and talked to Trump about the song- was able to play the song for him at some point, Trump liked it so much that he gave him his number and told him to call him so he could come see SCKBSTD on Broadway when it gets to NYC!
7) Simple Prayer
**Where’s the Bat>Benny and the Jets>New Orleans Style- a great new song debuted also in VA Beach -about a female character thinking about taking a good ole Louisville Slugger to her husband’s fat head, and even a crying kid- THE MIND is a crazy place, and although this is actually not carried through, I can see where some women could actually think this with us crazy men and all they have to put up with!
9) Invisible- Bruce says a song for the great youth in this play, very well performed!
10)Paperboy- this song although was not my favorite on Levitate, in a LIVE setting it takes on a whole new meaning and has continued to grow on me! I liked it at the VA BEACH SHOW, and truly loved here at the Wells! Also Bruce talked and demonstrated a little piano lesson for the crowd!
11) CONTINENTS DRIFT- probably the best this song has ever sounded, once again LIVE and Bruce really played and sang his heart out on this one! This supposedly ends act one with husband and wife singing this song together! GREAT SONG and once again one of my favorites of the night!
12) **If the World Only Knew- A song about the main character- a filmmaker, who’s family thinks he’s great, but the rest of the town and others around him think he’s nothing special! Very cool song, as Bruce would play with one hand snap his fingers with the other and then alternate! The crowd got in on the snapping! Very creative and once again a cool, song!
13) **Neighborhood Watch- a song that Chip DeMatteo wrote the lyrics about a Neighborhood Watch Community- and told Bruce it needed some music that needed a polka feel- Wow, Bruce had to work on this one, but once again- a creative song and neat sounding!
14) **FACE to FACE- a song that supposedly didn’t make the cut for SCKBSTD, but one that Bruce like a lot and decided to play it- a song about communication, technology and pretty much longing for face to face communication! Neat song!
15) Michael Raphael- a song inspired by SCKBSTD producer Michael Raphael
16) **Simple Prayer (Reprise)- a brand new, heartfelt version of Simple Prayer- LIKED THIS ONE ALOT!!
17) Soon Enough- a song that has quickly become one of my favorites- a song that tells the story of a father and his son and getting his priorities straight in life!
18) Here We Are Again- A song that once again sounds better LIVE than on the album, love this song! Bruce played with a lot of heart and emotion!
19) **Quasar Ray>Here We Are Again- A new song and a song well composed and written, once again Bruce played with a lot of heart and emotion! a perfect song that ends the play and the night!Bruce brings out the entire cast on stage and encourages the crowd to come and see the play starting JAN 18th!!!
So as you can see a lot to be excited about and a play that will definitely delight- the cast indeed has been working hard and Bruce is very excited about it! A great night to hear what this one incredibly talented, hard working musician and his childhood friend have been up to over the years that have help to produce what appears to be a very well thought out play, with some very talented actors and actresses, . . . all backed with an anchor of creative, powerful, hilarious, heartfelt lyrics and music that will indeed keep us all on this incredible journey and of course gain new fans and followers along the way!

WOW! WOW! WOW!
Thanks AMP for all the scoop and your attention to detail! You get “extra credit” for this one! You really do! Next round is on me!
What’s interesting, is that I have had some form of “premonition”….Long time ago, way back when…..That “In The Low Country” was involved in some fashion! I didn’t know exactly why or how, but…..That’s why I’ve been elongating, consistant and persistant with my cliche’…..Still havin’ a ball…..
Oh, by the way…..
Still havin’ a ball!

Hot Damn!
I really hope I have the opportunity to check this out!! Being in CT, I suppose I can always check it out in NYC……
Seeing Bruce play it in a concert setting, or a dvd/cd would be just fine for me as well!!

Sounds like it was a night to remember! One of my life’s joys is hearing a new Hornsby song for the first time. To hear a new one for the first time — live — is all the more special. Simple Prayer is one of my favorites, so I can’t wait to hear the “Reprise”!
Really looking forward to seeing the musical one day (fingers crossed!) — and purchasing the “Songs from SCKBSTD” record!
Thanks,Aaron!

Well Vic, since we’re so close, I could always swing by and sing you a Bruce song live. 😆 Figured you’d like them apples.
