ParticipantCan anyone give me some insight on what song it was that he infused into the tail end of his Mandolin Rain encore last night in Reno? And has he ever done that before or was that a first?
He went into Black Muddy River at the end, which I love, but he threw something else ahead of that as well that I’ve never heard before.
On a side note, that was Bruce concert #5 for me and by far the best so far. Although getting to be front-row center probably didn’t hurt much either.

ParticipantBounty —
Would be hard for a lot of us (those of us who were not at the show) to help you out…. 😆
Setlists are subject to that good ol’ “feast or famine” thang, you know what I mean?
Typically, BH throws in “That Would Be Something” or “Brokedown Palace” or “Row Jimmy”…if it’s not just “Muddy.” But you might know that, and he might’ve been doing something else. Hence the setlist would be cool.
Also, I Googled the show and got this —

Hey Guinness Goon, I’m pretty sure that that’s NOT the John Thomas in that Beefheart pic!

ParticipantTakavi,
Alas, I know plenty of folks weren’t there, but I posted in hopes that someone else in attendance surely would be reading. I seemed to be surrounded up in the front seating section by nothing but die-hard Bruce fans. I probably shoulda cornered one of them afterwards.
It was neither one of those mentioned standards, and I’m fairly positive it wasn’t a GD song at all. I’m hoping a recording eventually surfaces, because as a whole it was seriously an amazing combination and the best “mandolin” mix I’ve ever heard him do.

ParticipantYep, he went off on it too. Close to ten minutes. The boys didn’t pop on stage with him until Tango King.

ParticipantWish I could recite some lyrics, but it was just one of those completely after-the-fact “Wait a second, what the heck was that song?” things. Was just too wrapped up in how awesome it was.
I’m pretty determined at this point though…been going through all the set lists of years past and looking up all the more obscure or unusual songs he’s twisted into Mandolin and I haven’t found it.
Really loved the set list too, he made a point of commenting he had a plan of doing a lot of stuff off the “Bride” album
He did Shadowhand on Dolcimer at the the show too which was ‘friggin fantastic, had never heard that before and was thrilled to see it’s on Bride as well.

ParticipantHello,
I’m a bit late to this conversation, but I just joined the board after seeing (and meeting!) Bruce at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. His encore was Mandolin Rain, and at the end of the song, he segued into something I hadn’t heard before. It was very sad and beautiful. I wish I had paid more attention to the lyrics, but they talked about how “she left me with an empty nursery”, and I think she left a child behind as well. I’ve been trying to figure out what this song is for the past week. So far, no one has posted the set list from this concert, which was on 8/30/11. I’ll keep searching…
He also performed Shadowhand (my favorite) on the dulcimer and it was friggin awesome!September 4, 2011 at 9:34 pm #32620Si Twining
KeymasterThe song was George Jones’ “The Grand Tour”.
I’ll update setlists when I’m off my travels, but people are welcome to post them on the 2011 setlist page, or here on the board.

ParticipantSi, thanks for adding that daily dose with this…I was very grateful to eventually figure out what that was, and glad I have a live copy of it now, especially with the skaggs and regular mandolin versions blended like that on top of it.
Just back from Napa and Arcata shows….both were phenomenal.
