This Bruce Hornsby Cupertino show from 1998 has retained its popularity for more than twenty years.
Our Bruuuce.COMmunity Facebook group has gained almost a hundred new members in the last week, with more joining every day. One of the lively topics centred around first concerts attended, and this Bruce Hornsby solo show in Cupertino came up in discussion.
It’s a solo show from 1998, just before Spirit Trail was released (in fact Bruce makes reference to the “upcoming record”) and we get the first play of a few songs from that record. Added to that, covers of Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel, Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Traffic, Van Morrison and of course the Grateful Dead.
We’ll leave the commentary up to August Mozart, who was at the show:
“First Hornsby gig was at the Flint Center in Cupertino on a rainy April night. Solo show and he opened with an intro into “Sad Moon”…I remember the “Mandolin Rain” as it was pouring outside. The song that nigh had a special vibe about it that night, very rural West VA feel..like in a old honky tonky bar. He played it I bet the way he wrote it…”
