ParticipantBoone was awesome! If you’ve never been to North Carolina’s “High Country” ski area, especially in the summertime, I highly recommend it (downtown Blowing Rock is BEAUTIFUL). The show at Appalachian State University’s Farthing Auditorium was excellent, as well. Bruce seemed to be in a fun mood, and the organizers of the concert — part of a larger summer series — provided pens and paper to use to write requests. As Bruce said, anything he played would have been a request, he received so many. He played about 3 hours, an incredible solo show. Loved the set:
SET 1: Country Doctor, Valley Road, What the Hell Happened, End of the Innocence>Danny Boy, Streets of Laredo (?) tease, Talk of the Town>Charlie Woody & You, Big Stick, The Road Not Taken, In the Low Country, (Camp Meeting item)>Rainbow’s Cadillac.
SET 2: Song C, Sticks and Stones, Darlin’ Cory>A Night on the Town, Shadow Hands>Bach, Gulf of Mexico Fishin’ Boat Blues, The Way It Is, Hooray for Tom, Big Rock Candy Mountain>Run, Look Out Any Window, Mandolin Rain>minor key version.
Encore 1: Standing on the Moon, Halcyon Days. Encore 2: King of the Hill.
Apparently the true-life story upon which “Country Doctor” is based was told to Bruce by his wife and took place in the Raleigh area. “What the Hell” he played in response to a request for “one of his sons’ favorites.” He played both “Big Stick” and “Gulf of Mexico” by request even though they are normally band songs. Bruce had the ASU audience explain the “correct” way to pronounce “Appalachian,” (“App-uh-latch-en” — the last “a” is silent), even though he said he pronounces it differently on “The Road Not Taken.” Some clever person (…ahem…) gave Bruce a big wooden letter “C” to request “Song C.” He also played a tease by request that was, I believe, “We Will Rock You” (?). He said he’d taught one of his sons to play it on the guitar. He played one of the latter songs both cross-handed and cross-legged. B^)Vic

ParticipantGreat show, with tons of impressive piano and vocal work. The shear difficulty of what Bruce was doing was far and away the highest among all of the shows I’ve attended (though all others have been with the full band). Simply mesmerizing.
One negative: I found the crowd in Boone to be a bit sedate. Most of the Bruce fans seemed to be confined to the edges of the auditorium, with mainly season ticket holders to the App State summer series in the meat of the orchestra section. By and large, the folks around us were really old and sat on their hands. The lack of audience response to some of Bruce’s soloing was perplexing to me.
FYI the teaser was “Iron Man”, rather than “We Will Rock You”.

ParticipantGood points, boss:
Bruce’s workload increases at least fivefold during these solo piano shows. But he pulls it off fantastically. I’m just glad to be alive to see him perform; no one else can do these things. Has anyone EVER done what he’s doing? I’m no musician and have little musical knowledge, but when he played those “Camp Meeting” pieces, it was obvious even to me how difficult the jazz material is … his hands were ALL OVER those keys. Absolutely amazing to witness. And on band songs like Big Stick, his voice led the way above the piano.
ALSO: I ordered tickets online the day they became available, and I got Row N. If I’d called the theater box office, I could have gotten front row. Lesson learned. Having big fans scattered around the hall does make it difficult to get spontaneous applause generated audience-wide. It’s not an ideal system for Bruuuuuuuuce! fans.
Overall, though, I thought the crowd was very appreciative. The one guy (was that you, boss?) shouted “You’re a genius, Bruce!” which Bruce milked. The crowd cheered enough to receive what I saw as two encores. And did I mention the wonderful weather and how BEAUTIFUL it was there in the mountains?
Ah, “Iron Man” … Thanks for the clarification.

ParticipantCool, David! So I take it you enjoyed Boone more than Greensboro? Obviously my absense made a big difference.
