This is my first show report, so “give me a good grade, if you will.”

The show (Bruce described it as a concert) was wonderful! He was relaxed and appeared to really be enjoying the evening.

The concert took place in The Dana Auditorium on the campus of Guilford College. It was a part of the Eastern Music Festival’s EMF Fringe events. This music series offers festival-goers modern music alternatives to the mainly classical fare. The auditorium is a somewhat small and intimate setting.

The hall was softly lit, allowing Bruce to see the audience, something he greatly relished.

    Setlist: (corrections welcome!)
    Sneaking Up On Boo Radley,How Far Am I From Canaan, Heir Gordon, End Of The Innocence>Song F>Song A>Song D>End Of The Innocence (Shenandoah), Teddy Bear’s Picnic (Iron Man), Gonna Be Some Changes Made>Bach>Gonna Be Some Changes Made, Here We Are Again {a new song}, Donald Trump Song, Talk Of The Town>Charlie Woody & You, (Streets Of Laredo) Love Me Still, Spider Fingers>Questions And Answers>Spider Fingers>classical piece,Darlin’ Corey>Night On The Town, classical piece>The Way It Is, The Dreaded Spoon, The Valley Road, Mandolin Rain {minor key version}

Encore 1: Thelonius Monk piece (on new jazz album)>Rainbow’s Cadillac
Encore 2: Sticks And Stones, Lost Soul>Halcyon Days

After playing How Far Am I From Canaan, Bruce explained that this challenging song required independence of the hands (“it’s like splitting your brain”)

Teddy Bear’s Picnic was played in honor of a 5-year-old boy in attendance that might not have been enjoying the music as much as his parents

Bruce paused briefly to answer a couple of questions from the audience. The first question was, “How do you do that?” The answer: “The same way you get to Carnegie Hall.”

The second question, “How are your twins?” Bruce answered by saying, “Fifteen going on twelve.” (He was joking, of course.) He illustrated the kind of music they like now by playing a few measures of Iron Man.

During the show, someone yelled out, “Jack Straw!” Bruce gave a colorfully detailed explanation as to why he very rarely (if ever) plays that particular song.

The audience was receptive to the music and those who wanted to show their enthusiasm did so in a manner appropriate to the small venue-with one exception. One particular gentleman came to Party! He waved his hands in time to many of the songs and also appeared to be the only person clapping during several songs. What is Bruce’s new tactic for dealing with disruptive audience members? Give them the attention they crave; this will calm them down, and then the music can continue. This strategy was mostly successful. Bruce signaled the man to walk to the edge of the stage; the man spoke his piece, sat back down and was a bit calmer from that moment on.

Well done, Jackie!!! The Sibs, Bibs and FoBs [Fans Of Bruce, in general] are proud of you! Well done!!!

We loved the description of the venue and the audience. That’s quite a set list — Songs F, A, D, Boo Radley, a TS Monk Tune and a new song. We are just a tad envious of that pair of concerts, the meet-ups and your meeting of the S&K .

Just one queston, though… Would you please relate Bruce’s explanation[in all the colors he used] for his not playing ‘Jack Straw’? Perhaps, it would lessen the requests?!? We think it’s rather sad that some attention-seeking a**holes must be placated for BH to continue his magic.

    (Noisemakers……Fortunate Son. Nice quote!)

What a great report! You have a talent with your writing! :D You even get “extra credit” for telling about the lighting!

There’s only a few things I can add. Bruce made it clear when he came out he was not going to play anything he played the night before at Boone. (He did make a few exceptions.) Bruce also did not take an intermission. He played for two straight hours and then played two encores.

I’m also proud to say that I was not the “disruptive one”. I was on my best behavior! :D

Jackie, tell everyone about the Jack Straw story. I think they would find it interesting! :D

It all began with the Deadicated tribute CD released in 1991. Two of the tracks included were “Bertha” by Los Lobos and “Jack Straw” by Bruce Hornsby & The Range.

Fast forward to the 1996 Further Festival. Bruce and his fellow musicians were backstage listening to Los Lobos play. Los Lobos was really “tearing it up.” The audience, filled with Grateful Dead fans, gave a mostly lukewarm reaction to this great performance-until they played their final song-“Bertha.” The people went nuts! From that moment on Los Lobos kept this song in their setlist in order to insure that positive crowd reaction.

Bruce watched this scenario unfold and decided he didn’t want something similar to happen to him. He did not want to feel as if he “had” to play a certain selection during every show.

Here is the colorful part of the account. While spinning this yarn, Bruce dropped the f-bomb (as the young people say :) ). A few people in the audience were shocked; this was the revered Eastern Music Festival after all. Bruce offset the minor negative response by placing his hands over his ears imitating the “Hear No Evil” pose of one of the monkeys in the well-known figurine. Everyone had a good laugh and the “Jack Straw” tale continued without incident.
