ParticipantThe show was a lot of fun last night. etown is a radio program in which Bruce and another band were there for the recording of it and it’s like an interview with the performers. The owner of etown, Nick, conducts the show and asks the performers different questions. I have to tell you something pretty wild that happened prior to the show. Both Vic and I knew we’d be at this show, however, we forgot to email each other about meeting up prior to the show. My cousin went with me and we were seated in the 2nd row (it was general admission and I got there early – great seats!). There was one seat next to my cousin, in which a good-looking guy sat down in. This person was talking to my cousin but I really couldn’t hear them. I could see this person was introducing himself to my cousin and I said my name was Mary. This person said, “THE Mary??” I said I didn’t catch his name and when he said it was Vic, I nearly keeled over. I said, “THE Vic??” Here the venue holds 800-some people and what are the odds that Vic would end up sitting next to us. That was totally cool.
The taping started with Bruce coming out first. He played “Black Rats” first. This is a neat set-up because it’s real laid back and some down-time where the performers are tuning or Bruce had time to take some questions. I asked him what his favorite from “Levitate” was but he said he didn’t have one. He then did “Paperboy” and then a duet of “Shadowhand” with Nick playing his instrument. After the other band performed, which was a rock bluegrass band and very good, Bruce came back on and played “Prarie Dog Town” on the dulcimer. That was pretty cool as I’ve followed Bruce for years but have never seen him play the dulcimer live. His last song, also on the dulcimer, was “I Truly Understand” (Thanks Vic for knowing that song) into Night on the Town, in which he walked over to the piano, while still playing the dulcimer and made it without tripping over all the cables. Impressive.
A very fun night!! Vic, it was great to meet you!! Since the venue didn’t allow pictures, the only one I got was of Vic and me, which I’ll have to send to Si. Besides, I’m sure you people are tired of seeing pictures of Bruce all the time.

ParticipantRe: Boulder, CO etown taping
Dangit, Mary, you beat me to this posting by 30 minutes. Here’s my rememories:
Hey gang, I ran into Mary on the second row at the Boulder Theater last night, and she wrote down the set list; however, I think she’s in transit to Wisconsin (NOT Minnesota … ha! [inside joke]), so I’ll try to give a not-so-brief rundown.
Bruce opened the show with a solo “Black Rats” performance, followed by “Paperboy.” It’s always interesting to hear songs stripped-down for a solo (especially these new songs). Bruce then talked with E-Town host Nick Forster during the interview segment. At one point, Forster noted that the new record includes a “solo by a really great guitarist.” The way he worded it, I heard a couple people kinda gasp, thinking he was talking about R.S., … but he was referring to Clapton on “Space is the Place.”
Bruce noted that “Space” also includes (as a little birdie had told me earlier) a recording of Bruce’s (now 17-year-old sons) rapping when they were 11. Bruce said his son(s) are fans of 80s big-hair bands, which I thought was ironic because I was escaping those bands when I first became a Hornsby fan. Bruce said he does have a newfound respect for those bands, which he’d previously written off as “a music snob.”
They taked a bit about the program Bruce has endowed at the University of Miami; scoring the Kobe Bryant documentary; the musical, SCKBSTD, which still “doesn’t have an ending;” and the movie, “World’s Greatest Dad,” before Bruce and Forster, on mandolin, dueted on “Shadow Hand.” I always likes me some mandolin, and Forster did a super job, I thought.
Bruce teased “Low Country” after Forster talked about all the natural or scientific references on the new album. Bruce attributed that to reading the Science section in the Tuesday New York Times.
After several numbers by Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women (“Que Sera Sera,” several original songs, fun!) and an interesting interview with director Louie Psihoyos about his documentary of dolphin abuse off the coast of Taijii, Japan, in “The Cove,” (http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/thecove/) Bruce came back out for a dulcimer solo on “Prarie Dog Town” and “I Truly Understand,” which transitioned to the piano, followed by “A Night on the Town.”
So we got about six Bruce numbers over two or so hours … not bad! The finale was a “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”-style number with all the musicians playing and singing together. The name of the classic song is escaping me … anybody?
It was great to meet Mary on a really fun night. My only disappointment was not hearing “Cyclone,” “Continents,” or “Invisible,” but oh well. Next time. The show should air on your local NPR-ish radio station within 4 to 6 weeks. Check etown.org for specific times and dates or for the podcast.

ParticipantThanks for your review, Vic! After listening to “Space is..” I was wondering who that was rapping. Now we know! I can’t believe the rest of us will have to wait 4 to 6 weeks to hear the show! 😥 That’s like an eternity!

ParticipantSounds like you guys had a good night. Would have made the trip myself …not too far from Texas…but being only a week into recovering from painful shoulder surgery..I am better off reading all about the fun times you all had.
I enjoy reading the fun reviews on the shows.

MaryVic? Good lookin? Had to be an impersonator! 😈 Maybe you need your eyes examined! 😆
Do yourself a favor. Click on the “Community” link above and then “Pen Pics”. Now…..Was that “THE Vic” that sat next to you? 😆
On the other hand…..Glad you guys met! Vic is a true gentleman and a Road Scholar (sometimes)! 😆

ParticipantYa, I got your Minnesota alright, Vic. Like I told you, Minnesota is a different country from Wisconsin so don’t get those too confused.
Vic, great job on the description of the evening. When Nick mentioned the guitarist, my first thought was R.S. as well.
Monica, I hope your shoulder is doing better a little bit each day.
David, the guy that sat next to us was about Bruce’s height, blonde hair, beautiful blue eyes. Wasn’t that Vic?? Maybe it was an impersonator after all. 😆 That sounds more like Bruce!!
I did check the “pen pics” and yep, that’s Vic. My 12 year old niece always tell me I’m 750% blind without my glasses or contacts, so who knows who the hell sat next to us. At any rate, the person who did sit next to us was very nice. Now I’m thinking that it probably wasn’t Vic. ha

ParticipantDavid, thanks again for your appreciation of my Pen Pic — my most popular piece of fiction yet!
How many people actually remember it was inspired by Global-Moderator-at-large Allisa-? I think poor little Allisa must be lost in the wilds of Coeur d’Alene.
And yes, my avatar — blond hair, blue eyes — is much closer to my true appearance than my Pen Pic. Here’s the first actual picture of me to ever appear on Bruuuce.com …
Are you ready for this??? …..

ParticipantVery funny, Victor! I knew you were big, but I didn’t know you were THAT big! Had to be the reason why SMP described you as “THE Vic”! 😆

ParticipantSMP e-mailed me a pic of her and “The Vic” from the Boulder taping. Looking at the pic that SMP sent me and all the pics that Victor posts, it’s obvious that we do have an impersonator “on board”! Will the real “THE Vic”, please stand up! 😆

ParticipantFrom the looks of the 2 Vic’s, I sure hope the real one was the one sitting next to us. Also, my cousin told him the only way he could sit next to us was if he held her purse since she was using THAT chair for the purse. It clashed with what he was wearing (or lack of) so he declined.

ParticipantAwww Vic – I’m surprised you even remember me, it’s been so long! Lots of stuff going on in my world but I still check in occasionally to make sure you guys are behaving. It’s nice to know I haven’t been completely forgotten way off by myself in north Idaho!

ParticipantALLISA!!! I knew I could coax you out of hibernation! Hope all is going well in Cd’A! Times are tough out there … except for those of us who were fabulously wealthy and good-looking before the recession!
August 24, 2009 at 9:48 pm #31315mary
ParticipantOh brother, listen to Vic flappin’ his jaws. 🙄 Ok, I’ll give him the fabulously wealthy part but I’ll have to think twice about the good-looking part. 😆 You show me a purse to match your good-looks and then I’ll give ya that too!!
