I got four of my requestsChina Doll, Funhouse > He’s Gone, Down the Road Tonight
I was riding the rail infront of Bruce and got some great shots of him and Bobby Read but the angle I was at I couldn’t see anybody else only their heads. Casey Driessen was a real treat when he came out. He kinda looked like Krusty the Clown and had some goofy-ass red shoes. Strange cat but he’s got the skills. Some drunk goon behind kept bitching because Bruce wasn’t doing Range stuff, once Down the Road came on he yells out ‘finally some good stuff’ then he looks at me all shitfaced and said ‘you know what Im saying’ and I said ‘no all his stuff is good to me guy, Im actually a fan’, then he did the whole ‘I seen him before you were born jive’, then I said so ‘I bet I seen him 30 more times then you…he stumbled away after that.
I was surprised that Bruce didn’t mention anything about Jerry seeing that it was the 16th anniversary of his death, he did bust out He’s Gone so that was sweet.Bruce busted out some shorts and gray Nikes…because you know we always see him in jeans and Chuck Taylors…he did have on the dark blue long sleeve button-up…so his dress code wasn’t completely abandoned.
One thing that sucked was a taper that I was talking with before the show was turned away with his gear at the door 🙄
I guess it was sweet that Bruce opened because not only did I get home earlier but it downpoured about four or five songs into Bela’s set. I left about four or five songs and right when I got to my car it started raining.
I met Bela Fleck before the show and yeah he’s not too fan friendly but was kind of enough to take a picture with me before he ran off down the road.
Bela’s band is pretty talented musicians in their own right but the songs sounded a little unstructured…just a bunch of solos basically. So I figured I’ll hit the bricks and get home early.
All in all it was a great time

I was surprised that Bruce didn’t mention anything about Jerry seeing that it was the 16th anniversary of his death, he did bust out He’s Gone so that was sweet. That IS a nice-looking setlist; just enough variation (from the already varied) “norm.” Interesting to note no “Way” or “Rain,” even in an altered state, wonder if that was what was pissing off the wannabe museum-goer? (I wonder how it is that BH still gets the nostalgia-seekers; hasn’t he chatted before about how he thought he’d driven them off long ago? Do said peeps really think that they’re gonna get that blessed relief of a trip down dusty ol’ memory lane? It boggles my mind, but then again, BH could do Cage’s “4’33” for two straight hours and I would think that it was the proverbial shit, knowwhutahmsayin’?
)
Tangentially related: How many “REAL DEAD FANS” (upped and quoted for super-duper mondo emphasis) went to Dead gigs wanting to hear “TruckinUncleJohnGrayHellSugaree” etc etc every single damn time, year after year? Probably not too many (leave aside the cliched joke of “Were they too blotto to care?” Ha.), so’s I gotta wonder about the obvious…p’raps better debated in a different post.
Jealous that the Goon got “Gone,” BH must love him more than me…

ParticipantYo T,
I forgot to mention the best part of ‘I am hettier than thou’ drunk guy…he actually tried to hand Chuck Keith a request of ‘Every Little Kiss’ with a $20 attatched to it. His face was priceless. You’re right tho man, these cats that claim to be such fans should know how Bruce is and what not. How many times has he said he won’t do ‘ELK’ because it didn’t evolve well with his style.
Some time anybody on this board wants to be instantly annoyed go on ticketmaster or livenation and look up Bruce Hornsby and check out the reviews.
People give him 1 star because he doesn’t play his ‘hits’ after they go on some rant about being ‘hardcore fans’ if they were so ‘hardcore’ they would have realized 15 years ago that he didn’t revolve his show around his ‘hits’.T the best part about getting ‘He’s Gone’ I yelled out ‘Rat in the drain ditch!’ and he looked over smiling and instantly went right into it. Good stuff mang!
Although I didn’t get my Resting Place, Lost in the Snow, or Invisible, but I got my other four so 4/7 is still great!

So, handing Keith a $20 and/or hollering out various lyrics is how it’s done, eh? I might have to try those methods the next time…
I get where BH is coming from re. “the hits,” believe me. As said previously…BH could come out and play Cage or do an Ivesian slam on the ivories with a plank and I would think that it’s the best thing ever. But you know what…I kinda like ELK. 🙄 😆
Speaking of ELK and Ives, didn’t BH mention that the Ives estate tried to sue him for the intro, until he said that he openly borrowed the opening riff? Whatevs.
Speaking of whatevs, I WILL definitely have to check out those reviews. Every once in a while it’s refreshing to get a whiff of what the less, shall we say, open-minded have to say about BH not playing the Wax Museum Stroll-by Soundtrack.

He’d been there the previous week.

Kinda reminds me of a funny and similar story I witnessed first hand…
…a few years ago when Bob Seger came to town a co-worker of mine was wearing a Seger shirt at work. Another co-worker said something like ‘I never figured you as a Seger fan’. The Seger shirt guy goes ‘hell I’m surprised you even know who he is’ because we are like 30 younger than Seger shirt guy. Then I came in the room because I over heard the conversation and chimed in ‘I love Seger’ and the Seger shirt guy said ‘not as much as I do…I never missed his shows I have seen him everytime he’s rolled through town’. Then I was like ‘what did you think of the show last night’. He was like ‘yeah right I would have known..I’m his biggest fan blah blah’.
It was great to see his face when he hurried up and got on the computer to see that Seger played Cleveland the night before. What was even greater was when I showed him a picture of us with Seger as we met him before the show and got him to take pics and ‘graph some stuff for us.
The next day I gift wrapped a signed album and gave it to Seger’s ‘biggest fan’.
The dude thought I was a little bit ‘cooler’ that day. -
