ParticipantHere is a review of the Salt Lake City show on July 27. I found the writer’s point of view interesting. I’d like to read what other Board members think about the article.

I don’t think Bruce feels “obliged” to play covers at all. I don’t believe he has any idea what he’s going to play until he gets out there.
He regularly refers to “inflicting” his tastes in music on the audience… I don’t think that anyone who plays Webern or modern classical could be fairly accused of pandering to a crowd.

That’s definately not what we experienced at Red Butte Garden on Wednesday night. All I’ll say is the near capacity crowd felt a bit sad that the music ever ended. Bruce, Bobby, Doug D., J.V., J.T., Sonny, Bela, The F Man, Mr. Wooten, and Howie the Harp Man put on quite a show. So what if there were covers, they were not done in the usual way. It was the most beautiful night and to tell you the truth we didn’t want it to ever end.
Now for the froofy fruifs @ Salt Lake Rag – Jeremy P.U. – something stinksI think Bruce might call them jewelry rattlers’ and wouldn’t give a rats’ ***. But I guess to write for this lot you must be a rock-snob – above it all. Let’s face it most of the time people like this just don’t get it. Thats my opinion anyway. Here is who this Magazine caters to . . .
About JES Publishing
Headquartered in prestigious Boca Raton, Fla., JES Publishing Corporation has been publishing Salt Lake magazine since 1981, along with several specialty advertisement, non-subscription-based annual publications designed to increase awareness and generate revenue for specific clients. These publications include The Convention Visitors Bureau Guide; The Downtown Alliance guide; Park City Life magazine; The Canyons publication, a resort guide. The company also publishes Boca Raton, Utah Style and Design, Utah Bride and Groom, and Delray Beach magazines.
JES Publishing’s flagship magazines are upscale lifestyle magazines geared to an affluent and well-educated reader with an average household income of $355,000 in Boca Raton and an average of $190,000 in Salt Lake City, according to a 2006 survey by Research USA.I don’t particularly like S.L. magazine – but I love City Weekly. And Si, I never got a chance to tell you thanks for the incredible DOSE Day! Loved it – good luck topping that in the future. I hope you are doing well. Treah I know you would love people at Red Butte – very nice folks – I promise. Wish I could provide a set list – but I can’t. 1st song was Across The Great Divide . . . And lastly – Bela opened for Bruce – so they must trade off every other show or something.

Meh, moderately annoying re. the BH bit, but the faint dis at Fleck made me smirk.
With Si, BH doesn’t do setlists, so the chances of him kowtowing to covers or outside convention is whimsical, and doubtful — does BH feel like doing it or not? How many requests were there? How much is BH’s manager bitching at him this tour to do his hits, and does BH even care? If he does do the hits, which versions does he do? etc etc.
Not trying to pat us all on our backs, but we BH fans likes the improv, and we like the tunes. If BH feels like a cover, then so what? We get our rocks off on his originals, we get our rocks off on the covers he does. Interesting that the reviewer seems to feel this way; it might betray his lack of knowledge of BH’s catalog, as well an ignorance of the multiple cross-references going on between the originals AND the covers.
In the end, does it matter? And, he made me laugh with the Flecktones remark.

This might be the most unintentionally humorous review of a Bruce show I’ve ever read. What I gathered from it was the reviewer is really into bass guitarists but has never attended anything other than a night at the opera. He was surprised to see so many GD shirts at a Hornsby show, even after pointing out that Bruce toured w/GD for 2 years.
: Didn’t the GD tour nearly non-stop for 35+ years and could be credited with inventing the concept of merchandising at live shows? The reviewer made it sound like they were choosing sides or something. Personally, I’ve seen GD shirts at nearly every concert I’ve been to, so I’m not sure why this would be surprising to an alleged concert reviewer.
Did this review actually get printed in their “high class” magazine? Was it written on an iPhone? (that pesky auto-correct) I’m no wordsmith, but even I had to laugh at some of the misspellings/typos. (What does “discomfiting” mean?) I wonder what their affluent, well-educated reading audience thought of it? 🙄
The covers got a bigger reaction from the crowd than the originals? Could this be due, in part, to an element of surprise?
Also, I need someone to explain the last paragraph of his review to me. I’ve read it 10 times and it still makes absolutely no sense.

–Sorry if this comes across as harsh. My day was quite trying and this was my first chance to let off steam.

This was a pretty bad attempt of a review.
I think the replies at the bottom of the article say it all.

Errr… “discomfiting” is a real word. Means something like embarrassing. Seems used properly if you accept the writer’s contention that the crowd enjoyed the covers more than the original tunes.
Last paragraph makes sense to me as well. The writer is suggesting that the highlight of the encore (likely Little Maggie, itself a cover) was including within it another cover song. He is suggesting that this is an impressive display of musicianship, but in his mind it does not reflect well on the performers that the highlight of their show is a cover tune. I may not 100% agree, but it makes sense to me.
Maybe they cleaned up the article since originally posted, but I don’t see any misspellings.
I don’t agree 100% with the review, but “Anonymous” really needs to take a deep breath and think before posting in the comments. Might not be a bad idea for some folks here either, the reaction to DMBtex’s post seemed more than a little out of line to me. Different folks have different favorite bands and different taste in music. So be it.

Hey guys!
Don’t get your panties in a wad over this! It’s obvious that this “journalist” had never been to a Bruce show before and doesn’t know how Bruce does his “business”! I just happened to be in the vacinity of SLC at the time and……Bruce shined! He really did! He was just being his usual self and playing all the request that everyone wanted him to play! Seems no one at the show knew any of his “B” sides” so…..Bruce had a “soft” show of hits and covers that everyone was requesting. The crowd loved it and he, as usual, was just playing into the crowd.
Remember……That article is just one person’s opinion who is probably “brain damaged”, in “right field” and probably a “jack mormon”! If you want to read some “reality” about Bruce and Bela, check out Megan’s writings on FB concerning the Washington show.
And yes, Bruce and Bela are “trading places” as the opening act. Looks like Bela will open at Biltmore and Bruce will open at Chastain.
I say all that to say……It’s a great show and you don’t want to miss it! No matter who opens!
In the mean time……
Still havin’ a ball!

Absolutely amazed that one particular comment got past a moderator! 😯
