Check out the FAQ section on Bruce’s homepage and bring a copy of the of the following question and answer with you to all future shows. This way the next time venue management claims Bruce isn’t allowing taping you will have proof to the contrary!

“Does Bruce allow fans to tape his concerts?

Bruce’s office receives a large number of inquiries for permission to tape concerts. Bruce’s policy is that audience taping is allowed from the seats. No board patches are allowed and no equipment may be left in the sound board area. No taping will be allowed at the soundboard. Remember, each individual venue has its own policy and you must check with them for permission before you bring any equipment to the show.”

    Actually, no.

It explicitly says to contact the venue in advance. And if they say no, the no stands.

Aside from which, an artist is free to change their policy without updating the website promplty. Inconvenient for the taper, but we don’t control things.

Well Will the email you received from Melissa is completely in line with the stated policy on the site:

    “Dear Will,

There are no board patches, but you may record as long as the venue does not ban it.

    Thanks for writing,
    Melissa”

I know Bruce and I know that he fully supports audience taping of his concerts. Any theater personnel that informed you otherwise is full of it.

BTW, the Keswick in Glenside, PA most certainly allows taping so if you are planning on hitting that show next week please bring your gear! We all appreciate the hard work you in producing high quality recordings of Bruce’s shows!

Bruuuce!, the next time you speak with Brother Hornsby, can you ask him if this change in policy applies to all future shows or just the solo shows? And also, if he is still fully supporting audience taping, why are both the venues AND his own tour personnel saying that there is no taping allowed on this solo tour? And that this is coming from Bruce’s management office and Bruce himself?

    Thanks, Gunky

Please remember that taping is a privilege. Bruce has always
been very taper friendly. Since I’m a taper myself, I am very grateful
    to him for that.

Audience taping is usually permitted at his band shows, but not at “solo”
shows. There can always be exceptions, so you just need to be flexible.

Hmmm, I agree taping is a privilege but I know I’ve taped solo shows in the past without incident.

That said, it looks like the best policy is of course to follow the official policy and call the venue beforehand and ask for permission, every time. Hopefully then they will at least know whether taping will be allowed that night, whether by their own choice or Bruce’s.

This wil avoid unfortunate incidents like I know happened with some people who showed up at the Portland venue (historically taping friendly so they were expecting no problems) who were then told to put their $$$ equipment in coat check or lock it in their car. Not fun.

@ Maryland Hall last night they turned us away. I spoke with security before doors and was told no taping due to “copyright issues”. I asked if it was a venue or Hornsby issue and she said it was from the Hornsby camp. I asked if she could confirm with the Hornsby crew as taping is normally allowed. She came back 10-15 mins later and confirmed no taping.
Thanks for the encouragment for Keswick. I will call tomorrow and see what they have to say and have also sent emails to the contact us links. Keeping fingers crossed for Keswick.
