BH on FZ

No, it’s not a new link re. “Levitate,” and I’m sure that most of you have already seen it (press for the “Intersections” release), but very interesting to moi, being a Zappaphile, guilty as charged.

Odd characters? Check.
Quirky subjects? Check.
Jazz and classical influences? Check.
Well-polished band, capable of improv at a moment’s notice? Check. (You could add a degree of Baconian – heh – separation, what with JT playing keys for Beefheart.)
Wry, sardonic humor? Check.

I’d add to the above that BH and FZ incorporate(d) most aspects of pop Americana into their work, as well as the occasional bit of trenchant social commentary. FZ was a bit more ‘blue’ in some topics 😆 but BH isn’t without his seedier references…

BH mentions “The Grand Wazoo” (as close to ‘jazz fusion’ as Zappa got) and “Sheik Yerbouti” (a veritable sampler of musique concrete, childishness, pop spoof, knock-your-socks off musical passages) as his FZ faves…interesting. He also, perhaps half-jokingly, adds that maybe he’s “in pursuit of Zappa.” That’s telling, too.
