ParticipantAnyone gotten the “Bride” yet?
I pre-ordered (yes, thru Amazon) and it arrived today (Sat. April 30)
. I’m not a fan of Amazon, but B&N.com didn’t have it listed yet…
Anyhoo — let’s listen to the “Bride” and rant & rave about it here, shall we?
(One thang we could do would be to tag the date and location of each tune, as the liner notes do not include such esoterica and miscellanea… 🙄 😆 Fer instance, dunno where “Cyclone” is from, but “Dr.” is, as first rept’d by Wardlaw, from MN via the freebie. “Limo” is from Buff. ’08. That’s all I’ve managed to determine…help a trivia-lovin’ fella out…!)

Participant“Resting Place” is also from that free download
I recorded a nerdy Hornsby-related podcast with the owner of Popdose, Jeff Giles and we spent about 35 minutes discussing the live album and a bunch of other Hornsby related topics. It will be online in the morning to coincide with the Amazon debut. I can’t say that we ultimately ended up dissecting the actual live album as much as we planned to, but we cover quite a few things and above all, we had fun, which is always the goal

KeymasterJust listening to it now – you two did a great job! (although I think Jeff dodged a bullet if he was going into an interview with Bruce thinking his last band was called The Southside!)
Great podcast.

Thanks Si….it was definitely a momentary brain fart on Jeff’s part….I could have taken it out, but we thought it was funny, so we left it in there
This one came up kind of quickly and I’d had the idea of having you do it with us, but wasn’t sure that we could make it work with the time difference (I’m not even sure how much of a time difference there is) – we’ll have to make it happen the next time we do a Hornsby-related chat!

KeymasterWas going to suggest the same, but I guess you’re done with the hornsby content for now.
If you do another one in time, feel free to plug our http://www.DailyDoseDay.com on May 30!
Receommended listen for sure.

No need to watch what you say! If Bruce didn’t enjoy it, he wouldn’t read it! I think what you say gives him enouragement!
Why do you think the “C of B” is the “C of B”? 😆
That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it! 😆

KeymasterI’m going to make an educated guess on Mandolin Rain (bonus track):
10/10/09 Trump Taj Majal – Atlantic City, NJ

KeymasterAlso, since Bruce references STL and this track is clearly coming out of Jacob’s Ladder:
Cartoons & Candy: 07/14/07 Gateway Arch – St Louis, MO

ParticipantJust finished listening to it today, still processing BUT here is my overall review (always subject to change in the upcoming months
) —
— Disc 1 is very good. “Defenders” rocks, and BH’s falsetto back-and-forth is hilarious. “Bobby/Catenaires/Talk/Charlie” is awesome, “What The Hell” always tickles me, the Buff’ “Limo” is smokin,’ and the re-mastered “Doctor” sounds even better than the freebie version.
— Is “Circus” from Lowell ’08? The song begins with the same so-far unnamed Americana tune that BH began the song with at the Aladdin in ’04 and that the dude from our board here requested that BH do in Lowell.
— Wet Blanket For Ya: I’m not rilly rilly a fan of disc 2, outside of “Swan” and “Candy Mtn,” which more than justify their roles. Excellent tunes, great versions. But…why did BH cut right in from (the not on disc “Jacob”) to “Cartoons”? Doesn’t work. I suppose that BH didn’t want another “Jake” on this live one. Despite the Barber intro, that version of “Gonna” just don’ta work for me. “Good” is a bit overplayed, as is “Resting.” “Dreamland” with its Derryberry 12-string solo at the end is kinda blah. The novelty of “Line” appearing is cool, but the song is average. And, I know that it was interesting to have BH try something new, but the dulcimered versions of older tunes like “Shadow”…swing and miss.
Sorry, that’s just how I feel, man…So, all in all, a little bit better than average…I dunno, IMHO, just good when it coulda been great? 😳 😥

ParticipantDoes everyone LOVE that version of “This Too Shall Pass”?? I am not a “Swing Face”-basher, but I truly love how the song gets the more traditional Noisemakers treatment here. Cannot wait until June 10, Noisemakers at the Pageant in St. Louis!!

In my defense, I must say that BSF is a fantastic cd…with the exception of “Pass.” Only bummer on the disc.
Glad that you like it, though. And I’m jealous of ya that you were at THAT St. Louie show…

ParticipantHi, Everyone,
Am I the only one (hope not) who thought that whole $3.99/Amazon deal for Bruce’s latest double-live album was promoted in a VERY misleading fashion, to put it mildly?
The information at Bruce’s site (the rotating graphic on the Home Page), for one thing, spoke then (and still speaks now, days after the deal ran its course) of a “2-CD/25-Track Live Set”.
If you read that, what would you think?
Well, I thought the one-day offer of $3.99 for the album would get me a 2-CD/25-Track album, and NOT some MP3s, which is what Amazon offered for that price, instead. I, of course, didn’t learn that until I visited Amazon’s page for the album on the day that the sale took place.
This felt like a bait-and-switch…did anyone else believe the $3.99 sale was actually for the CD, too, or was I the only one so “duped”?
Thanks,
BramMay 8, 2011 at 3:45 am #32678OSCAR
ParticipantBram,
I always assumed it was MP3s that would be $3.99. The news release on Bruce’s site seems pretty clear it’s digital (MP3). But then again, I am pretty familiar with the specials amazon runs on MP3 album downloads.
http://www.brucehornsby.com/news/bride-of-the-noisemakers-available-now-amazons-daily-deal/
The the rotating graphic refer to the $3.99 special?
I have to admit my viewpoint is probably biased from the beginning, since most of the music I purchase these days is in digital form. In fact, the only time I really buy CDs anymore is when I am at a concert and can purchase from the “merch person” directly. Sorry if you feel you were misled, but I hope you can agree it’s a great set for the money at either $3.99 OR $11.59.
May 8, 2011 at 4:34 am #32679bramweiser
ParticipantThanks for responding, Oscar.
Even now, that rotating image speaks of a “2-CD…set”. Plus, I recall it talking of a “download” only in relation to “Mandolin Rain”, say, (meaning, only in relation to something extra, in addition to the main item being purchased back on sale day) and NOT directly in relation to the main $3.99 purchase.
I don’t deny that it’s a good deal if someone wanted the album as MP3s, but Bruce (& his team) really should have made clear what they were going to offer. I, for one, was very excited in the days leading up to the sale because I understood them to be making the “2-CD set” available for $3.99, so imagine my disappointment when they ended up saying “CD” to mean “MP3s”.
They should have known better. It’s just that simple.
Thanks again,

ParticipantBruce and the Noisemakers are by far my favorite musicians, and music to listen to. It’s near impossible for me to dislike anything that comes out of their instruments. That being said, I will try my best to critique both positives and negatives from Bride.
Negatives:
– My main complaint overall is the lack of diversity on the album. I understand Bruce has to put on a few songs that are pretty recognizable, but these are some songs that could have been left off simply because they’ve appeared very often on the free/live noise albums as well as live in concert: Fortunate Son/Comfortably Numb, Resting Place, Changes Made, Good Life.
– Here are some songs that I think would have been better choices to replace the list above (My personal preferences), granted I know some Bruce hasn’t played live in quite some time: Stranded on Easy Street, Barren Ground, Harbor Lights, The Longest Night, Swing Street, Lost In the Snow, Stander On the Mountain (I know it was on Here Come the Noisemakers) just to name a few.
– I was disappointed that a few of the tracks were exact repeats from previously released “Albums” (Free/Live Noise particularly), like Funhouse. I understand the average listener isn’t going to notice, but I would have liked for Bride to be exclusive in that sense.
– I feel like Bruce included What the Hell Happened and Michael Raphael as slower songs to try and mix up the album, but if you’re going with that strategy, why not use a song like Barren Ground, Here We Are Again, or Lost in the Snow, which are generally slow and mellow songs, yet still more lively than those two?Positives: (Too many to cover, but here are a few)
– White Wheeled Limo: I love the arrangement of this. In particular, JV’s bass solo as well as Sonny’s, really enhanced the song and brought a unique touch to it, which really separated it out from all the other versions of White Wheeled Limo I’ve heard. Limo is definitely one of my favorite songs from Bruce, and I think it’s safe to say this is my favorite version.
– Line In the Dust: I loved that Bruce included this on the album, and to go back to what I was saying above about including some unique songs into the album, Line In the Dust fits that perfectly. A great choice, and really well executed.
– Dreamland: Solid as always.
– Circus on the Moon: Really loved how Bruce included this on the album. Lively, and really enjoyable version.
– This Too Shall Pass: Great version.
– Country Doctor: I think Matt/Jeff said this in their podcast, but this song really climbed up my list of my favorite Bruce songs, really solid.
– Although the version of Standing on the Moon/Halcyon Days was nothing new in terms of composition, I must say that the transition into Halcyon days is probably one of my favorite transitions/combination’s of any songs Bruce does. It’s brilliant.
– In general the whole band was on top of their game, as always, throughout the whole album. Sonny on Resting Place, JV on White Wheeled Limo, JT on Tango King, Doug on Line in the Dust, and Bobby on Cartoons and Candy.Overall:
– I’m thrilled to have another “official” live album to listen to. I’m partial to Bruce’s live stuff because Here Come The Noisemakers is the album that got me hooked to Bruce, and was the only Bruce material I had for a long time, until one day I woke up and realized, hey, there’s probably a lot more awesome stuff from this guy that I don’t know about. And just in general, I think Bruce is one of the most underrated live performers out there today. Like I said above, I find a very hard time disliking anything Bruce does, and this was no exception. Other then a few songs being a little dry in terms of not really being anything new (ie. Good life and Changes made), I loved every song on the album. I thought composition wise and technically speaking, the band’s playing was flawless, as always, and some solos on there and overall gelling from the band speaks volumes to just how talented the Noisemakers are. I look forward to Bruce’s next official release, whenever that may be. I have a feeling it will be a solo album, which is disappointing to me, just because I much prefer hearing the full band play. None the less, Bride of the Noisemakers lived up to my high expectations for Bruce and the Noisemakers, and I will thoroughly enjoy it for months and years to come.May 8, 2011 at 9:40 pm #32681OSCAR

The band is definitely on fire for this one and I’m glad the bass solo is actually audible in the remixed version (compared to the version on BHLive).
The highest energy part of the song (to me anyway) is the jam that starts around 6:05. Bruce lays down a simple lick and everyone picks up on it and builds it up into something fantastic. Vintage Noisemakers stuff! Unfortunately the “Bride” version of this might as well be a drum solo. Bobby Read’s sax is where most of the energy comes from and it’s almost removed entirely. It sounds like someone was asleep at the board when this was being remixed for the new album.
Take a listen to this short clip from the original (from BHLive) and compare it to what’s heard on the Bride version at 6:05.
Bride is so good, I can only nitpick, but this really jumped out at me when I was listening.
