ParticipantThe Bruce 100 is a great project undertaken by Si, who I still believe to be a real stand-up person despite his proclivity for inappropriate poetry. 😯 😆
In fact, I had been thinking about starting a new thread in which everybody lists their Top 10 favorite Bruce songs. So, with no further ado, and with help from Si’s pre-made list, why don’t we all list our ten favorites?
A Top 10 list is tough to do, since we’re choosing from a catalog of dozens of great songs. But we can expand it to our Top 20 favorites later if we want to (I actually think my Top 11-20 is a more interesting list). So post your Top 10 now, and we’ll see how our lists match-up with Si’s official Top 100 after he finishes crunching all those numbers.
My TOP TEN list leans heavily on Bruce’s early work and his ballads. What can I say, I’m a nostalgic old “softy”:
1. The Chill
2. The River Runs Low
3. Till the Dreaming’s Done
4. The Road Not Taken
5. The Way It Is
6. End of the Innocence
7. Another Day
8. Crown of Jewels
9. Mandolin Rain bitonal
10. Gonna Be Some Changes MadeNovember 8, 2007 at 2:09 am #29333David Day
ParticipantWow! That’s a tough one! I’ll try. Here are my top 10 as they hit me knowing I have “brain damage”! 😆
1. Stacked Mary Possum (Have you had your “daily dose” today?)
2. Candy Mountain Run
3. Tango King
4. Across the River
5. Across the Great Divide
6. King of the Hill
7. Hot House
8. Spider Fingers
9. Pastures of Plenty
10. Defenders of the FlagIsn’t that interesting? None of mine matches Vic’s Top 10. Can we draw some sort of conclusion from that?

ParticipantIt’s hard to come up with ranking criteria (best to hear live, best lyrics, best studio performance, best jamming, etc.), but here’s what I came up with.
I absolutely love the sound and feel of the album version of Shadowland. I’d like to hear more of Bruce’s studio work sound so free and open. I really think Shadowland might be the most under-appreciated of Bruce’s works.
1. Shadowland
2. The Chill
3. White Wheeled Limousine
4. King of the Hill
5. Swan Song
6. Big Swing Face
7. Pastures of Plenty
8. Harbor Lights
9. I Will Walk With You
10. Mandolin RainNovember 8, 2007 at 3:47 pm #29335babytweety2yo
ParticipantThats a hard one for me.. I could never pick just 10 favorites…too many for me.
After going thru the Bruce 100 I noticed a song I haven’t heard before. I knew of it…the Donald Trump song????
If anyone has a copy of this would you be willing to email it to me or give me a link where I could download it.
Would be very much apperciated!!!
Thanks!

ParticipantDavid: I conclude that we both have good taste in our own ways. But c’mon, not ONE ballad in your top 10? Have a heart, man!
Trent: Nice list. I agree with you on Shadowland … I just don’t know if I can make it fit in my Top 25. Am I the only person who read more into “The Chill” lyrics than Bruce suggests? “Pastures” is also high on my list.
Baby: I believe the official title of the Trump song is “The Don of Dons.” It and “Low Country” are two songs Bruce has written for a Broadway play. You can find a live solo recording of it from Bend, Oregon, on 2/5/07 at BruceHornsbyLive.com. Give a Top 10 list a try!
I’d like to see some Top 10s from the female perspective. Where has Allisa been, anyway?

I asked myself: “Which songs make me absolutely stop what I’m doing because I don’t want to miss one note?”(And even then, it was still difficult to narrow it down.) Here they are:
1. The Way It Is
2. Down the Road Tonight
3. Defenders of the Flag
4. Till The Dreamings Done
5. Carry the Water
6. Fields of Gray
7. The Tango King
8. Song C
9. So Out
10. Un Poco Loco/Chant SongJackie

On the other hand, I thought Candy Moutain Run, King of the Hill, Tango King, Defenders of the Flag, Hot House, Across the River, were ballads! 😆 😆 😆 😉

Lake Lanier, GAPS A live version of Shadow Hand would be my 11th choice! Does that give me any “extra credit”?
November 9, 2007 at 11:20 pm #29339Victor
Participant“Head-banger” David: the “Shadows Hands” redeem you!
Jackie: I’m surprised you’re the first to put “The Way It Is” at the top of your list! “So Out” is a nice addition, and “Carry the Water” is unique. Thanks for playing!
Interesting that so many of us have “Pastures of Plenty” near the top. Seems to be underplayed in concert! Also — I had threeor four big “radio hits” on my list, which is the most by far. Some of Bruce’s best stuff has never been largely heard (though Intersections is helping with that problem).
Still waiting for BabyTweety and Allisa to play the game! MVF? Lola? Ellen? Carey??? How about you, Rich???

Thanks for playing!Victor, I should have made it clear,my list isn’t from most favorite to lesser favorites. I really can’t name an all-time favorite song-there are just too many to choose. I put my “top 10” list in the order the songs were released. “The Way It Is” would probably still be near the beginning of a true top 10. simply because it was the song that introduced me to Bruce’s music. Or perhaps I’m secretly one of those “nostalgia buffs” Bruce teases sometimes. 😆

ParticipantDefinitely next to impossible to only pick 10 Bruce songs as favorites. I’d almost have to list songs as 1A, 1B, 1C, etc. So here goes nothing:
1. Pastures of Plenty
2. Sad Moon
3. Country Doctor
4. Halcyon Days
5. Spider Fingers
6. Lost in the Snow
7. Swan Song
8. What A Time
9. Tango King
10. Circus on the MoonNovember 13, 2007 at 1:25 am #29343David Day
ParticipantGood to hear from you molomolomolo! I was about to send a pose’ out after you! 😆
Do you realize that Tango King and Pastures of Plenty are in most of your lists so far? That is comforting to me! I was beginning to think the “brain damage” had kicked in and I was the only one that thought that! 😆

ParticipantDitto David — good to see Molomolomolo is taking time away from the baby powder and diaper pail to visit the forum!
May I just say here that I listened to Spirit Trail on the road this weekend and I don’t think there’s a better three-song stretch on any album than the Great Divide > Line In The Dust > See The Same Way trio on that double album. Thematically, they’re similar, and, lyrically, they have some great turns. The music’s not bad, either. 😆
I don’t think there’s a better double album — period — anywhere. It’s so absolutely solid from top to bottom! I love ST, and Bruce could do much worse than framing his new album in a similar fashion. Just my pair o’ pennies.

Vic
Vic,
My thoughts exactly on ST. That record was my entry point into Bruce’s music and is still my favorite overall record hands down of his. I wouldn’t mind seeing something along those lines done again as well.As for the baby powder and the diaper pail, I’m definitely having my fill of those. We had a boy and a girl back in April. Both are well and growing up on a steady ‘daily dose’ of Bruuuce and Doc Watson.
David,
No need to send a posse after me. I’ve got my own posse now that is as good as any around! It’s good to see the “brain damage” hasn’t taken away your appreciation of the finer things!November 14, 2007 at 12:49 am #29346David Day

ParticipantDavid Day wrote:Victor wrote:Still waiting for BabyTweety and Allisa to play the game! MVF? Lola? Ellen? Carey??? How about you, Rich???I’m flattered to be missed, Vic. Thanks. Here are my choices, in no particular order:
Another Day
Gonna Be Some Changes Made
Across the River
Rainbow’s Cadillac
Old Playground
China Doll
Valley Road (bluegrass version)
Sunflower Cat
On the Western Skyline
Crown of JewelsIt was hard to pick just ten, and I was surprised that nothing from Spirit Trail made my list, cause I like that album a lot. A lot of this is mood-dependent, too.

Evil, evil, evil…. limiting it to 10 was a bear. 20 would’ve been easier, but still would’ve had tons of omissions of the many songs that go up and down the list on a daily basis. So, today’s top 10 would be:
-
Across The River
The Red Plains
The Road Not Taken
Fortunate Son
Passing Through
Down The Road Tonight
Candy Mountain Run
The Chill
This Too Shall Pass
Fire On The CrossWho knows what tomorrow shall bring
Rich (by name only)

ParticipantTwo more good lists with an interesting mix of old and new. I’m surprised Rich is the first to list “Fortunate Son”!
Ellen — Somehow I knew you were out there keeping tabs. Happy to see our mutual admiration for “Another Day.”
Think of keeping the list to only 10 as an exercise in self-discipline.
Who else keeping a low profile out there is brave enough to try?
Si, we’d all like to know your Top 10 list!
November 21, 2007 at 2:28 pm #29350cooleveningdancer
ParticipantThis is easy . . . I only like nine of Bruce’s songs, so here goes –
Across The River
Across The Great Divide
Show Goes On (heard it on “Intersections” & thought it was a new one, my husband had “SFtSS” for 12 years at his work)
Pastures of Plenty
Spider Fingers
King Of The Hill
Every Little Kiss (even though I know Bruce doesn’t like it – oh well)
Mandolin Rain (only the new version – that old one was gettin’ sooo old)
Thats Just The Way It Is (can still remember the first time I heard it)Victor: so, let’s hear your interpretation of “The Chill” (I’ve been wondering)
Si: just want to let you know how much you rock! (especially loved the daily dose yesterday mandolingoinhome 042496)
Megan M: I love your version of “I Will Walk With You” (I’ve wanted to tell you that a long time – and WOW Bobby Read)
Everyone: Happy Thanksgiving! (eat as much as you want)
Bruce: Happy Birthday! (you are gettin’ sooo old)November 21, 2007 at 6:19 pm #29351Victor
Participantcooleveningdancer wrote:This is easy . . . But you’ll have to come up with one more Bruce song that you like before I spill the beans. People might overanalyze me too much afterwards… 😮

Bruce: Happy Birthday! (you are gettin’ sooo old)Well thank you so very much for saying so…and yes, WOW Bobby Read INDEED!! It’s a rare combination when talent like Bobby’s comes accompanied by such an open and generous heart. I’m lucky to count him among my friends.
And hey, if Bruce is gettin’ old, it’s only like fine wine, baby, it just keeps getting better…..Happy Thanksgiving!

ParticipantVictor, you are making it hard for us “low profilers” to come out. Thanks alot!
If I have to find one more song . . . hmmmmm . . . I kind of like “Set Me In Motion”.
Now, will you please give us the scoop? And leave the dreaded spoon in the damn glove compartment.
Megan M: I would be interested to see what songs you like. . .
November 23, 2007 at 4:46 pm #29354meganm
ParticipantOoooooh, this is a serious challenge for me….it would be much easier to count the songs I’m NOT fond of (and even then, I’d have a tough time finding any!) But as for a top ten, let’s see…..
1)The Way It Is
Heard this when it first came out and it literally made me fall to my knees—-thank goodness I was in my living room! The thought that went through my head was, “Holy Smoke, somebody’s finally writing real music!!”
2)Every Little Kiss
Can’t help myself! I too am aware of Bruce’s feelings about it, and I even understand WHY he feels that way about it, but personally I find this song powerfully evocative and moving. I also enjoy hearing Bruce’s old, caramel candy/primal scream, un-educated voice every now and then….
3)Fortunate Son (Spirit Trail is my favorite album. I love every song on it and this one particularly)
4)Sunflower Cat
5)Harbour Lights
6)Look Out Any Window- Fields of Grey (It’s a tie–is this cheating??)
7)Shadow Hand
8)Across the River
9)Halcyon Days
10)See the Same WayEven as I’m writing this, I know I’m going to go and check the CD inserts and find 40 more that I could’ve swapped for these….but these were what leaped into my head….
Incidentally, my favorite cover combo is Girl From The North Country/Darlin’ Be Home Soon. Rips me to pieces.Happy Birthday to my dear friend, Bruce!

ParticipantMegan, thanks for sharing those. I would like to say my sentiments exactly. Oh! Except for the fact that when I first heard “The Way It Is” I was in a car, so it’s a good thing I was sitting down. On my earlier posting I was trying to spice things up and see if I could get anybody riled up. I think I “See the Same Way” as everyone else, and find it impossible to pick just ten songs. But I think it is fun to see what everyone likes, and maybe eventually we will have the chance to post our second lists.
Have a great day everyone!

ParticipantOK, cooleveningdancer, here was my first impression of “The Chill”:
I thought the lyrics described a spouse arriving home to find a husband or wife in the midst of an affair:
“I’ve seen the signs and heard the rumors.” “I know I’ve had my fill, been run through the mill. Try to smile, but I feel it still.”
That person perhaps sees a strange car in the driveway and movement inside the house, then is filled with a cold rage:
“Imagination hold on tight. I’m sure there’s someone in there. I saw those curtains move there.” “Look at me with my eyes all a glistening.”
The spouse may be so upset that it brings tear, standing outside and feeling “The Chill.”
There you go; that’s what I thought! Feedback?
