ParticipantI am so glad Bruce’s show moved to this venue, only a 3 hour drive from Cleveland. I just got my tickets today as they went on sale at noon. This will be awesome.
I bet Bruce will get overloaded with GD requests as this will be the 13th anniversary of Jerry’s death. He’s gotta bust out a few Dead tunes.
Man, I can’t wait to finally see the Noise Makers, its been a few years. I seen Bruce solo alot since then, but I’ve been jonsin’ for the him with the band.August 10, 2008 at 5:08 pm #30026GuinnessGoon
ParticipantMan, what a night. We met Bruce and the Noise Makers before the show. It was great talking to them and getting pictures with them. I had them all sign Halcyon Days for me as that is my favorite album. We were riding the rail or atleast the end of the stage all night. Bruce’s piano was in the way of any great pictures but I’m sure some of the ones I took came out alright. The band played from 9:30 to almost 12. They had an opening band that probably shouldn’t have been up there. The only talented one up there was the guitar player. I felt bad because it just wasn’t their crowd so everyones just staring at them, counting down the time to when the real show starts. Here is the setlist from what I wrote down:
White Wheeled Limousine, Tango King, Country Doctor, Jack of Diamonds > (new song) Badlands All Around You?, new orleans style “Mr. Chuck Jam” for stage hand Chuck, End of the Innocence > Cruise Control > awesome Sonny Solo, Defenders of the Flag, Standing on the Moon > Halcyon Days, Tempis Fugit style jam > King of the Hill, Sugaree > Fields of Gray, Bach variations > Gonna Be Some Changes Made, Sunflower Cat > Alot to Laugh Train to Cry
E: This Too Shall Pass > The Way It IsHe spoke about Jerry Garcia throughout the show, naturally as it was the 13th anniversary of his death. All in all it was an awesome show, the band looked like they were having a blast especially Bruce and JV. They played 3 of my request out of 5. Setlist may be missing a few little dittys that he did during jams of some songs. I was to busy dancing around to write down everything.
It was great because before Bruce left the stage he came over to us and told us “thanks for coming out, hope you had fun, have a safe trip back, take care” as he was shaking our hands. It was great he remembered us from earlier as we rapped with him for a little while before the show twice. Plus he remembered me from earlier this year. Thanks Bruce you’re the man!Good times…

ParticipantTo borrow a quote from MVF: “I’m envious.” Sounds like a fantastic show! Tango King,Country Doctor Jack Of Diamonds,Fields Of Gray AND Defenders Of The Flag-what a great selection of songs.
What were the 5 songs you requested?
I hope Bruce and the Noisemakers will play in my “neck of the woods” in the near future.

ParticipantHere’s the review of the show as printed in The Buffalo News (http://www.buffalonews.com/entertainment/music/story/411275.html):
Hornsby gives solid performance

Updated: 08/10/08 6:59 AMBruce Hornsby’s concert in the Town Ballroom on Saturday night wasn’t originally scheduled there, but the revocation of the temporary liquor sales permit at North Tonawanda’s Gateway Park (where he was originally slated to play July 26) led to his rescheduling at the alternative venue.
Gary Zoldos and his band, the Pillagers, were already scheduled to perform in a benefit concert for the Buffalo City Mission with Middleman, another local group, but when Hornsby’s Gateway Park gig evaporated things began to change.
Hornsby — whose career includes hit singles, Grammy Awards, tours with the Grateful Dead and recording projects with bluegrass star Ricky Skaggs and a trio with jazz masters Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette — has both an eclectic sonic palette and a social conscience.
The confluence of the “Feed the City” benefit and Zoldo’s ability to persuade Hornsby to help out resulted in Saturday evening’s concert. While there was an increase in the cover charge from freewill to $25 at the door, the attendance of Hornsby fans swelled the audi -ence.
The resulting percentage of proceeds from the gate was, according to talent promoter Donny Kutzbach, “raising a lot more for the City Mission than [the original concert lineup] would have.”
When Hornsby and his band, the Noisemakers, strode onto the stage for their portion of the evening, a great roar went up from the crowd. As the night wore on, it was apparent that the audience was (quite rightly) enamored of Hornsby and his associates.
Hornsby’s vocals and keyboard playing were solid as ever, and it sure was nice seeing him pick up the accordion and actually play something other than “Lady of Spain” with it. But it was his jazz-and jam band-inflected songwriting and his ease with the audience that made his performance memorable. Especially notable was a powerful version of the tune he co-wrote with Don Henley, “The End of the Innocence.”
While the leader was the primary focus, the band was supportive and incendiary at the same time. They didn’t overwhelm the star, but when they had the chance to solo, everybody delivered the goods with vigor. Drummer Sonny Emory and bassist J. V. Collier were particularly noteworthy, although it would be hard to dismiss the contributions of guitarist Doug Derryberry and saxophonist Bobby Read as mere note spinning.
Despite having an unfortunate name for a band seeking to generate money for charity, the Pillagers played a fairly decent set before a receptive audience that was obviously aware of the group and their repertoire.
While the Pillagers played a few of Zoldo’s high energy originals, most of their time on stage was taken up with socially responsible selections penned by such cultural icons as John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen, with tunes by the Who and the Rolling Stones tossed in as a bonus.

Our boy gets to be the hero of a good cause. How cool!

ParticipantA couple of additions to the set list of the songs he played in other songs. He was playing around a lot in songs, which was great to hear.
Little Sadie -> White Wheeled Limousine -> Little Sadie -> White Wheeled Limousine
King of the Hill -> Mystery Train
Fields of Gray -> That’s Where It’s AtAugust 13, 2008 at 9:13 pm #30031GuinnessGoon
ParticipantThanks for putting up the fill-ins. I forgot to mention Little Sadie before the WWL.
Cool article about Bruce, thanks for sharing.
I requested ‘Tango King’, ‘Gonna Be Some Changes Made’, ‘Standing On The Moon’, ‘Harbor Lights’ and ‘Rainbow’s Cadillac > Franklin’s Tower’
I know that last one is a once in awhile thing but I talked to him about it before the show and he made it sound like he’ll play it for me but never did. I am glad to hear the three of the five/six. I think the roof would have blown off if they did do the ‘Rainbow’s > Franklin’s’. I kinda figured he would bust out ‘SOTM’ anyways but I still put up the request just to make sure or at least hope.As a huge DeadHead I thought it was great to hear him talk about Jerry throughout the show in tribute to the date of his passing.
I saw two tapers before the show with their gear, but later turned around during the show and seen them a few people behind me. So I guess they couldn’t bring in their taping gear.
Man, that would have been a great recording to have.
