Its been a long time since I posted here other than yesterday, but I just wanted to share my concert experience from last night in Kalamazoo with Bruce and the boys. Last night’s show was such a wonderful and memorable night. I am so thankful that the band didn’t come on stage exactly at 8, as we were still fighting for a spot in the unsupervised parking lot. Man what a mess that was. It was a short show as it ended at 10.
I wish I would have written down the setlist, as I usually do. I guess I was afraid of not knowing alot of the Skaggs songs. I was completely blown away not only by Bruce & Ricky, but Ricky’s band as well. The guys on fiddle, banjo, and lead guitar were all amazing. The White Wheeled Limousine was one of the best versions I have ever seen or heard. I wish I could get a recording of them playing that song. They jammed it out hard last night. I really didn’t think that those good ol’ boys could jam that hard and keep up that well with Bruce as well as they did. They completely fulfilled my expectations last night.
Our seats were second row on the left side of course. They were great seats except that Ricky was in the way of my view of the three guitar players most of the time. The one I really wanted to watch the most was the one that was mostly obstructed by Ricky.
I got alot of great pictures of the band, except it was hard to get a clear shot of Cody the lead guitar player. He is in some but with Ricky mostly in the way. I will try my best to put up a few within the next week or so as I have a few more concerts during the next two weeks.
My buddy Jimmy and I met Bruce(again), Ricky, and all of Kentucky Thunder except for Paul (one of the rhythm guitar players). We must of missed him somehow.
Andy (fiddle player) and Cody (lead guitar) hung out and talked to Jimmy and I for about a half hour or so until Bruce and Ricky came out. Those guys were so awesome to chat with. They were so down to earth and took some pictures with us and shared email & myspace addresses with us. I had everyone sign the info sheet about the band that came with the program given out before the show. Bruce hung out for a few minutes with me and Jimmy and took a couple of pictures with us. I was a little depressed that the flash wasn’t on and the pics of Bruce and us came out dark, so I had to lighten ’em up a little bit. It was funny because Bruce actually remembered us from the Notre Dame solo show back in ’05.
Like I said, it was a wonderful and memorable night.
Thanks for the fun show Bruce, Ricky, and KT.

Go see these guys and support them, they are awesome.

I’m SO glad to read this knowing you made a LONG trip and weren’t sure about Ricky. They do an incredible show and are evolving all the time. If anyone is on the fence about the bluegrass it’s time to hop off and go see what it’s all about. It’s a show chock full of talent and energy.

Hey GuinnessGoon: Glad you enjoyed the show so much. I was there too – made the drive from Chicago and met up with a friend of mine from Iowa for the concert. I agree with your comments on the concert (and that parking lot), especially the version of “White Wheeled Limousine” which was just outstanding. Wow! It’s a shame about the current no taping policy, because I’d love to have that one to listen to again. I also liked the bluegrass treatment of “The Way It Is” and it was great to hear Ricky sing “Sis’ Draper” as I like his version of that one. A great selection of songs – and some good ideas there for a Ricky & Bruce Vol.. 2 cd (guys, what do you say?) Ricky & Bruce were both outstanding as expected and what an amazing bunch of musicians in Kentucky Thunder. Amazing talent on the stage that night and a nice venue too – it sounded good where I was sitting. It made for a great night of music that was over way too fast – I could have gone for another set. As for a setlist, I took no chances and went up to the stage after the concert and asked if I could have one and ended up getting the one from Bruce’s piano. (Bruce? Setlist? That sounds so funny to me after seeing Bruce for so many years working without one – taking requests and just winging it!) So, here you go – the setlist for the eveining straight from Bruce’s piano:
    Black Eyed Suzie
    Toy Heart
    Bluegrass Breakdown
    Darlin’ Corey
    The Way It Is
    Mandolin Rain
    Hills Of Mexico
    The Dreaded Spoon
    Sheep Shell Corn
    Sis’ Draper
    Sally Jo/Little Maggie
    White Wheeled Limousine
    Uncle Pen
    The Valley Road
    Super Freak
    (encore:)
    Cluck Ol’ Hen
    Pig In A Pen

Hope that helps and again, glad you enjoyed the show, too.
P.S. – I was at the solo show at Notre Dame in 9/05 also. That was a good night and a nice venue. Would like to see Bruce play there again. Enjoy and have a good one, ‘Goon!

Hey thanks alot for posting the setlist. I really didn’t think to try and score one at the show. I usually try and get a setlist from a roadie after a concert. I actually collect them and usually get them signed by the band. I have about 30 of them. I’m glad you had fun at the show.
