ParticipantA while ago, I mentioned somewhere how I thought the chorus of the song ‘Halcyon Days’ reminds me of ‘Easy Like Sunday Morning’ by the Commodores.
I think there are a few times when some of Bruce’s songs remind me of other Bruce songs. That’s not a bad thing. It’s that maybe he’s just expanding on a musical idea he had earlier, mindfully or not.
For example, I think the chorus of ‘Down With That’ sounds a lot like the intro to ‘Swing Street’ at a different tempo. It’s as if Bruce could segue from one to the other easily. (“Got a thing going down on swing street…over the fields and cross the sky”). The chord progression is very similar.
I also think that parts of ‘Fun House’ sounds like a slow tempo ‘Hot House Ball.’
Anyone else notice this, or any other examples?

KeymasterI’ve thought for some time that “Gonna Be Some Changes Made” sounds like an up-tempo “Way It Is” (or the famous few bars of each song’s chorus). When I heard someone else mention it to Bruce, he reacted with surprise and agreement, as if it hadn’t occurred to him before.

An arpeggio is when you take notes that make up a chord and play them as single notes, instead of all at once (like 1-2-3…..1-2-3…..1-2-3 “That’s just the way it is” 1-2-3…..1-2-3…..1-2-3 “Some things will never change” etc.). They may also be in the same key, or a similar one.

ParticipantSomething about Song B reminds me of the intro for Changes Made.

ParticipantI reckon Gonna be some changes made sounds VERY like track 9 from Halcyon Days but at a faster tempo. (CD is in the car and can’t remember the name- it mentions the I-ching and mirror mirror on the wall)
I reckon both songs came from the same groove/playaround.
Kind regards

ParticipantThe intro to “Harbor Lights” sounds a lot like “Song C.” I wonder if the former got morphed into the latter.
Doesn’t Bruce “quote” “The Way It Is” on “Try Anything Once”? And “Changes Made” does bear a lot of resemblance to “The Way It Is.”

ParticipantI remember seeing Bruce at Shea’s Theatre in Buffalo, New York in ’93 (one of the better shows I’ve seen), and remember him playing this nice little bluesy riff at the end of Jacob’s Ladder. When Hot House came out within the next year or so and I cranked out the first track, there’s that riff as the opening bars of Spider Fingers.
Always nice to hear Bruce take a melodic idea that pops up in a concert, retain it, then write a song around it. I guess that’s what separates us from these music gods… *lol*
