ParticipantThis was an outstanding show. It took place on the beautiful campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, NC.
The Bruce, Ricky and KT show was only one part of MerleFest, a four day (April 24-27), 14 stage music festival celebrating the life and music of Merle Watson, renowned musician and son of musical patriarch Doc Watson. The festival originated 21 years ago as a tribute to Merle, who died in 1985 as a result of a tractor accident. Proceeds from the event benefit the college and other worthy causes in the surrounding area.
From 1950s ballads and rock and roll, to bluegrass and beyond, April 26 was filled with music. Well-known artists (Bruce Hornsby, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, The Waybacks, Rhonda Vincent, etc.) and those who may not be household names yet (Riley Baugus, Dirk Powell, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Polecat Creek, etc.) played during this gathering.
Thunderstorms couldn’t dampen the musicians’ spirits! When rain and lightning erupted around 1:45 pm, all the electrical equipment was safely unplugged and everyone seemed prepared to wait out the storm under the dry tent where we were watching the show. During this “down time” some amateur musicians broke out their instruments and gave an impromptu concert. This led to some spontaneous clogging by some older children. (We were at the Dance Stage, after all…)
Since it appeared the lightning wasn’t going to relent anytime soon, the scheduled band (Polecat Creek) simply decided to huddle together, telling the audience to circle around them. They then proceeded to give a truly ‘unplugged” performance.
The storm finally abated, just in time for the musicians to get plugged in and play 3-4 more songs.
Of course, the gathering had its share of food and merchandise vendors. One of these stands caught my eye. The company was called Blue Moose Coffee. They were selling a drink that contained coffee, pralines and chocolate called the “Moose Hornsby!” Blatant commercialism, yes, but at least they were paying attention to the roster of performers at the event.
Bruce, Ricky and Kentucky Thunder took the “Watson Stage” around 9:10 pm. This is an outdoor stage built to look like the front porch of a rustic mountain log cabin. Because the audience area is so large, a big video screen is located near stage left to allow those sitting far away or on low chairs or blankets to get a view of the musicians. Before playing “Darlin’ Corey,” Bruce told the story of how Ricky and he began playing together. During this tale, Bruce mused that as a result of this collaboration, they ended up on Jay Leno’s late-night show, “Where all 50 year old musicians end up.”
“The Way It Is” featured a great introduction by Bruce, some wonderful two hand independence and interesting interplay between Ricky and Bruce. After this song, Bruce commented on never having to tune a piano during a show, unlike all the other stringed instruments on stage. Ricky replied, “If you play in tune, you won’t be playing like us!”
After playing “The Dreaded Spoon,” Ricky commented, “That’s a mournful song.”
The highlight of “Sally Jo” was a tremendous solo by Bruce.
“The Valley Road,” the show’s finale, was a showcase for all the musicians; they really pulled out all the stops on this song.
Although this was not one of Bruce and Ricky’s longer shows, it was packed with exciting moments and enthusiastic musicianship.

ParticipantThanks for posting this, Jackie. I was wondering if any of our “Bruuucesters” were going to make it to MerleFest. I just returned from a few sunny, hot days on the beach in SC and a few glorious albeit kind of rainy days in the Blue Ridge Mountains and I have absolutely fallen in love with that section of the country. Hope the weather was kind to you this week, I know there were nasty storms and tornadoes in parts of NC.

I live less than 10 miles from one of the areas that was hit hardest by the recent storm/tornado. The only disturbances I noticed were some loud bursts of thunder-I feel very fortunate.
About MerleFest: The mountain setting added much to the atmosphere and you’re right,it is a glorious part of the country. I had such a good time there I would go back again, even if Bruce wasn’t playing (and that’s a bold statement coming from me!) 😯

There is nothing like listening to some great bluegrass music in the smokies. I was out of town when the Bruce and Ricky tour came to my town.
One of the things that I loved and miss about Bruce’s shows at the Biltmo’ is the beautiful mountain setting. Maybe Bruce will come back to MerleFest next year and I can go too. It wouldn’t be too far away for me.

ParticipantHaving just returned from the Biltmo’ and not even coming close to seeing everything there in one day, I definitely want to go back for a second visit. (Having two one year olds slows you down tremendously!) Maybe if enough of us on here got in the ear of Bruce’s team and even dropped lines to the Biltmo’ people (nicest staff every, by the way) perhaps we can get them to arrange a return appearance from Bruce and the Noisemakers. There is a great non-com radio station that can be heard in Asheville, 88.7 FM I believe it was, for those who may be traveling through there. There is one like it here in Louisville and it is probably the only chance you’ll hear a post-’80s Bruce tune on the radio. While we in Asheville they played a steady rotation of bluegrass, which I felt was the mandatory soundtrack for the area.

The station that you heard was WNCW (you can listen to it online at http://www.wncw.org/). It is a great non-com station that plays a program called “Goin’ Across The Mountain” on Saturdays which is all bluegrass from 11 AM to 7 PM. It is my fav show to listen to on Saturday which drives my wife crazy when we are going somewhere in the car. And you are right about it being the only ststion in the area that plays anything Bruce besides his “Greatest Radio Hits”.
I don’t know if the Biltmore Estate is doing their summer concerts anymore but they seemed really popular when they did have them. I would think that their visitor numbers are down since more people aren’t traveling as much because gas is so da#@ expensive 😡 It would be great if Bruce’s people and the Biltmo’ folks could work out a concert date.

ParticipantJust got back from “crossing the pond”.
Haven’t had much time to write for several weeks.
Can’t believe I missed Merle-Fest. I was in Brevard (so close) that weekend for a commitment. I wanted to go so bad! Saw all types of posters advertising Merle-Fest at the college. I was even asked, “Aren’t you the one who likes Bruce Hornsby so much? Don’t you know he’s playing at Wilksboro?” Couldn’t help but say, “Yes, but I have to be here with you instead.” 😆
Biltmore is still having it’s summer series. Here’s the line up for this year:
An Evening with Steven Curtis Chapman from $769
Friday, August 1
KC & The Sunshine Band and Village People from $819
Saturday, August 2
The Stepcrew from $679
Wednesday, August 6
An Evening with Gladys Knight from $739
Thursday, August 7
An Evening with B.B. King from $839
Friday, August 8
An Evening with REO Speedwagon from $789
Saturday, August 9
An Evening with The Beach Boys from $809
Friday, August 15Can’t believe they would rather have the Village People over the Noisemakers!

Note: Bay Days is free. That includes one night at the Inn, very nice dinner, nice breakfast, shuttle to and from the show, entrance to about anything at Biltmore and tickets. It is a little pricey, but well worth it for Bruce!
They do pamper you well!
I still put $20 a week in an envelope just in case it does happen again. There is hope!

I was thinking the same thing myself when i saw the prices David listed. Those prices don’t include the $150 one way cost of gas to get there from Louisville, a five hour drive.

ParticipantI do save a little at a time for Biltmore. Bottom line is the bottom line! 😆 If I don’t have it saved, I would stay at HoJo also.
I tell you what……Next Biltmore, everyone can pile into my room at the Inn! 😆
