ParticipantI like to think I’m pretty well versed in slang, but I am clueless when Bruce refers to “crackers and cheese”. What does Bruce mean?

ParticipantIt always struck me as Bruce trying to be clever and oblique using the “cracker” (i.e. ignorant redneck) in a juxtoposition of the more common snack, cheese and crackers. Given the subject matter of “Talk of The Town” and the defense of a love interest in spite of prevalent culturala norms of the time and place, it fits.
Now, can someone explain why “Cheese And Onions,” by The Rutles was as funny as I found it to be? I love the part where it goes “Do I have to spell it out?” and then it’s followed by “c-h-e-e-s-e-a-n-d-o-n-i-o-n-s”. Cracks me up every time (as opposed to “crackers me up”?).

ParticipantTrent,
If you happen to have the 10/26/04 (Blue Note-New York) dose of “Talk Of The Town,'” Bruce gives a very specific definition of this term. He could have been sharing a big joke with the audience, but I really think he was giving the real meaning.
Rich has the ‘rednecks” part right…the other word in the phrase is ahh, shall I say very “earthy” and I won’t write it here for fear of the banning stick & my own bashfulness. Some members of the Blue Note audience seemed a little shocked by the phrase if I remember correctly.
Maybe someone familiar with the dose could give a tactful hint for the second part of the phrase…

Participantahhhh…
The Blue Note “Talk of the Town” is probably my favorite version of the tune. I have listened to it dozens of times, BUT I had mistaken BH’s words as “right next to [yaya]” instead of the correct “rednecks and [yaya]”. I have never been blessed with a lysol clean mind, so I was sorta surprised I didn’t know what Bruce was talking about. Thanks to Jackie for helping my mental dirt hill reach new heights!
