OK, here I am, sitting in a box seat in the grandstand at Colonial Downs, poring over the Daily Racing Form, and checking out the horses entered in the races today.

    Then, it hit me.

    And it hurt.

But not really all that bad.

Wouldn’t “Crackers ‘n Cheese” (or some variation, like “Crackersncheese”) be a cool name for a race horse?

Discussing this with my darling bride, we decided that a lot of Bruce song titles and phrases would be cool names for thoroughbred race horses. It wouldn’t be the first time :)

Heck, I remember betting on a horse running at Aqueduct in New York named “Mull Of Kintyre”, only because it was the name of a Wings song that McCartney wrote about the area in Scotland where his farm is. Although I’m not 100% sure (it was a while back), I believe “Mully” (hey, a horse player likes to get close to the object of his hard-earned $2) had won a few races in Europe. At Aqueduct, he didn’t win. Just like the Wings single, which hit #1 everywhere else in the world, but was issued as the b-side to the not-as-good “Girls’ School” in the US. Maybe if the race was in Canada, or the UK…

And then there’s my personal mid-90s saga of a horse named “Farmonthefreeway”, also the title of a Jethro Tull song that I love. Every time that “Farmy” (see prev. paragraph) ran at Belmont, Aqueduct, or Saratoga, that I could convince 95X in Syracuse (yup, I was living in Da ‘Cuse at the time) to play that Tull song, I successfully played a win ticket on him. Coincidence? If you follow the theory that the only person that you can prove is real is yourself, then maybe it’s part of some divine script or something deep and goofy like that. Or, most likely… not. It’s probably more of a case of some really superstitious SOB doing something silly.

So, in honor of goofy names that people give race horses, and our love for Bruce’s music, let’s conjure up the following scenario:

Bruce decides to own a race horse (or, even scarier, a group of well-heeled Bruce fans decides to pool together in an ownership syndicate). What Bruce-esque name should the horse be given, and, if you feel like it…. why?

Have fun. I’ll try to conjure up a few myself.

As the legendary horse racing commentator, Harvey Pack, says, “May The Horse Be With You!

P.S. Lisa suggested that “Song B” or “Song D” and such might not be the greatest horse names, but there have been worse. Heck, “Bred To Win” lost in his first race as a 2-year-old today, but they did scratch the horse named “Scratch Me.”

My top three Bruce song titles that would also be great race horse names:

    1. Talk Of The Town
    2. Cartoons and Candy
    3. King Of The Hill

The first two I chose for their use of alliteration-very poetic and easy to remember. (Sticks and Stones was disqualified because the song mentions broken bones; broken bones and horses shouldn’t be anywhere near each other).

King Of The Hill certainly sounds like the name of a Triple Crown winner.

Songs such as Lost Soul or Barren Ground didn’t make the list. They are great titles, but they don’t sound like winners to me.

Walk On is probably in that boat, too — cool context, but doesn’t sound very fast. Although, the more I think of it, Lost Soul would be kinda cool.

A few that I thought of are:

      Maninasilksuit
      Circus On The Moon
      Big Swing Face
      Main Generator
      Admiral’s Daughter
      Macrame

    More later… probably.

    Here’s more….

Sunflower Cat (if he/she is a descendant of the great stallion, Storm Cat)
      Rainbow’s Cadillac
      Tango King
Cruise Control (ok, maybe not a fast name)
Fieldsofgrey (if it’s a grey horse)
Pasturesofplenty (if the goal is eventually breeding)
      Noisemaker

I really like Rainbows Caddilac and Tango King… but the problem is it might take some time, and creative breeding, to “manifest” these names. If I’m not mistaken, race horses names are chosen based on thier parentage. So I believe that the names must incorporate some aspect of at least one of the parents, if not both….

it might take a while to come up with some of the appropriate pedegree’s for the cooler names.

I don’t think that it all that tough to get most of these names registered by the Jockey Club. There have been horses named after songs even when the song name had nothing to do with the pedigree. Mull Of Kintyre had his name taken from a Wings song about the area where McCartney’s farm is. Homeward Bound’s name came straight from an S&G classic. Afternoon Delights, a top California horse recently, was named after the Starland Vocal Band song, even though owner Burt Bacharach didn’t write that one!

Some horses named after people, such as Giacomo (Ky. Derby winner the other year, named by one of the owners of A&M Records after Sting’s son’s nickname) and Dreaming Of Anna (last year’s Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Filly winner and the winner of the Virginia Oaks this year, named after the horse owner’s mother who had passed away recently).

The one I wanna know the background to was a horse that ran the New York/Florida circuit back in the early 90s, named Bodacious Tatas. Hunting that pedigree down on Google gets you some interesting results, especially the Images page!
