KeymasterI’m going to use this topic to update you all on the Daily Dose Day. Feel free to jump in at any time.
At the moment, we’re eight hours before everything opens, and the bigger picture for me right now is making sure I get there at all! My service provider has a very intermittent connection, for the first time in years! Their engineers are looking at it… they really do pick their moments!
Everything should be good to go at midnight EST… if I’m a few minutes late, then you know why!

ParticipantIf It gets pushed back by a few hours or a few days, I bet we will all be here patiently waiting( Maybe bitching at Si a bit )

That would really make my day.

ParticipantAnd we’re off! So far so good – best of luck, Simon!

KeymasterAn hour an a half in, and I’m beginning to think that last night’s curry was not a good idea. Actually, I started thinking that last night.
The sky looks nice at this time of day, you’ll find. (It’s 6.40am here…)

KeymasterAha – life on earth, as those in the UK start to surface. Donations really took off in the last hour, and we have our first two winners…
Todd in Sheboygan gets a Ratdog T-shirt and Bobby Weir CD. Our long-time friend Pete Rabjohns just netted himself a couple of tickets to the rugby Premiership Final at Twickenham in May, courtesy of Sky Sports and Simon Lazenby. (Thanks Si).
And it is incredibly cold out. (I’m allowed fresh air, aren’t I?!).
This is fun. You can all watch me unfold live on the internet over 24 hours.

KeymasterI feel like telling you all how close this came to not happening, now that I feel safe.
First off I suffered a hard drive crash at the weekend (and what a crash – I dropped it). 320gb down the toilet. (Not literally, I hasten to add. It hit my front room floor). one hastily-retrieved backup later (thank you USB keys), and that was solved.
Then my local internet provider chose last night and this morning to do some routine maintenance work,. By my reckoning, that was the first time in at least three years that they’ve done that. So no connection until about half an hour before we were due to begin.
And here we are. I need an energy drink already…

Now, I’m reading how “Murphy” was giving you quite the run in the last 24 hours. Didn’t know who he was up against, huh?!? Way to go Si!!
Great work, amazing event!

KeymasterIt’s only just begun, Kat! It’s only going to get better… but then I would say that; I know what’s coming!

KeymasterHere’s a scoop for the forum gatherers, since I know this has been in great demand within these pages before! This will go up within the next hour, with thanks to our own MVF:

ParticipantSi, just a quick thank you for all your hard work. I posted about this on my own site, so if you have a small surge of traffic, that might be why.

ParticipantDaily Dose Day(s)
From Si:
It looks like I could be out until tomorrow … we may have to do [Daily Dose Day] in two halves, and all converts will be open for an extra day. The most entertaining dose of the day may have been a tape of me on the phone to my ISP…
April 9, 2007 at 7:05 pm #28441Jonathan
ParticipantAh the wonders of predictive texting; surely Si meant the “contests will be open for an extra day”, did he not?
A real blow that today is the day his ISP is giving him grief.
Hope you’re back with us soon, Si.
April 9, 2007 at 8:41 pm #28442LolaPelusa
ParticipantAnybody out there??
I can not download any of these doses? Usually, I don’t have any problems, but this time the connections seem to go only so far and then they are interupted. I don’t know if it’s at my end or yours…
Will they be up again tomorrow? Will the ‘Name That Tune’ contest also run another day?
Lola
PS… It was on my end; servers crashed at work and at home!!!

KeymasterWell, I promised surprises!
I apologise to all for that sudden halt – my internet connection chose that day to crash for the first time in years, and I am hugely embarrassed.
I had access for about two minutes (through my cell phone!) to put up the front page with all remaining doses, as it was clear that normal service would not be resumed that day.
I really apologise for that, and I hope that nobody feels cheated that I was not able to serve everything up as promised.
As a gesture of goodwill (and remorse!), I’ve rustled up a few golden extras, which I’m now going to extend into a second Daily Dose Day starting at 9am EST today (Tuesday). Please stop by every hour after, for some new doses and additions to the site.
Contests will now remain open until 10pm EST today, and the prize for arranging highest corporate donation until midnight. Hopefully doses are reachable – let me know if not. (Please remember to left-click on them).
Thanks all for your patience, and even more still for your wonderful donations. I am floored by the total so far, and I’d encourage those who have yet to contribute, to please give it some thought. Every penny really does count, as you’ll see in the letter from the Merlin Project. Do give it a read.
sincerely (and humbly),
– Si.

ParticipantSi….
I thought about you all afternoon yesterday. When the site didn’t change after the 11am update, I was afraid things were amiss. It’s so obvious how hard you’ve worked on this incredible event and then…these crazy ISP issues. I can just imagine how distressed you must have been.
Regardless of the complications….you’ve made it easy and fun for all of us to take part in making a difference. You’ve built a real community of wonderful people here.
I want to thank YOU for a fantastic job on a very, VERY successful event. YOU created the vehicle, YOU made it happen.
You rock, Si!!!!
Kat

ParticipantSo Si do we know just how many people visited the site during daily dose day? Is there a way to count the IP addresses that have visited? I think that would be so cool if it was possible to know that!
Keep up the good work!
Kyle
April 10, 2007 at 5:06 pm #28446Si Twining
KeymasterI’m led to believe that there were well over 1,500 (different) people yesterday, and we’re heading for something similar today.
Sometimes in the next week I expect to break 800,000 visits since the site started.
