ParticipantI NEED A NOISEMAKERS FIX!!!!!!!
I like Bruce solo (Charlottesville, VA, and Greenville, SC) And I really like Bruce and Ricky (Raleigh “Good Morning Show”). But the best concerts, by far, have been with the Noisemakers. Even, dare I even say it, better than The Range?
My favorite Range concert moment was in Williamsburg, right after Night on the Town came out. They were winding up a rather soulful “Defenders of the Flag”, complete with walk ons by local politicians that were friends of Bruce. Anyway, at the very end of the song, John Molo left the drums, picked up his guitar, sat on the edge of the stage, and picked out “The Star-Spangled Banner”. I truly miss Molo.
My favorite solo concert moment was in Charlottesville (about 2001 or 2002), at a benefit concert at UVA. He came out, took a bow, did a spin, and said it was his tribute to The Dead. This was also the concert where I first met Mama Hornsby and Jon Hornsby. During the concert, Bruce told the story about how Don Henley wrote the lyrics for “End of the Innocence”, what the “G” stands for in Kenny G, and the story of how Jon wrote the lyrics for “Mandolin Rain”.
And, of course, my favorite Noisemakers concert was at the Biltmo’. Bruce and the band (including R.S. Hornsby) were about 3/4 of the way through “Walk in the Sun”, when Bruce grooved right into “Hey Baby”. Then Bobby Hornsby jumped on stage with his bass. The great triumverate – Bruce, Bobby, and R.S. I still get chills about it. With the Noisemakers also playing, it was pure heaven. If I’d been a little younger, I mighta swooned………..

ParticipantOkay……. so obviously NOBODY has a favorite concert moment except me. How about most memorable moment at a Bruce concert?

ParticipantSorry MVF. I wasn’t at the Biltmo’ when the big fight happened but I did go there in 2004 just after Halcyon Days was released. It was my first time there as well as my first noisemakers show. Needless to say, a good time was had by all!

I guess that my most memorable experience was at my first Bruce concert at Freedom Weekend Aloft in Greenville, SC. I went there with my future wife and some friends and we got there a little early. Being a big Brucehead, I recognized the strains of Rainbow’s Cadillac coming from the stage and I thought “Oh crap, the concert has already started!” I rushed to the stage as quickly as I could and looked for a good spot to set up our blanket for the concert. Once I did that and I took a look at the stage, I could see that Bruce was up there playing but the concert hasn’t really started because he kept stopping and talking to people on the stage. I then realized that he was just doing a sound check. 😳 That is when I got a clue about what kind of guy Bruce is that he does his own sound checks instead of chilling out backstage while some roadie does it for him. I probably could have met him since there weren’t many people around and no security at the time, but I was too chicken to do so.
The concert was “da bomb” and it was my first time hearing Bruce’s concert style of playing and mixing up the songs instead of playing them straight off of the record. Since then, I go to every Bruce concert that I can.
