Si Twining
KeymasterHi all
I’ve made reference in the past to a difficult relationship with this website’s “hosts” – the company which provides the web space on which I put the pages. They have taken away any facility for international customers to make a payment (that’s right, an online company which won’t accept card payments, here in 2011).
To cut a very long story short, I received a very terse e-mail from them at 6AM this morning asking for payment before the end of the day, despite them withdrawing all means of me making any payment. The alternative, which they laid down very clearly, was that the site is withdrawn. The funds are not a problem, although obviously I have no intention of dealing further with such an obstructive company.
It’s in hand – I am looking to move the site to a more competent provider. The downside (for me, at least!) is that it’ll likely mean rebuilding the website from scratch, so you might only have the bare bones for now. There’s a positive in everything, though – I have a much different, much better design in mind, and one which will make full use of the Bruuuce.com community better than it ever has before.
So if the site disappears for a day or two, you’ll know why. But keep trying, and you’ll soon see a new site, better and (eventually) bigger than ever.
Thanks!
– SI.

ParticipantSounds awesome (The new site, not the difficulty!). Thanks for all your hard work!

KeymasterThanks… it may be a while coming (sometime early to mid July looks likely) so it may disappear for a week or two. I’ll make sure the doses and new setlists go up, even if the rest of the site is blank!
I’m hoping for visitors to be able to upload their own photos, and maybe even give a “star” rating to other people’s.
Those are just two ideas – maybe this screw-up with this company was just what we needed to “reboot” the site and give it some social media aspects. Time to bring it up to date!

: Maybe instead of a “star” rating…..There needs to be an “ugly stick” rating! ❗ 😆

KeymasterGot a good bit of graphic work done on this today… all with a mouse as my left arm is in a ❗ splint!
I’ll use this thread to update you on some of the new features which have really been a long time coming.
… so for the last couple of days I’ve been obsessing over a colour scheme, then thought I’d put it to the vote on here… then came up with something completely different. So I’m hoping that with the new site, you’ll all be able to choose your own colours individually! If you want pink and green with black stripes, it’ll save your personal settings so that each time you visit, that’s what you’ll get. Or if you want the same colours as now, it’ll do that also.
Might seem trivial, but that level of detail (or geekery) appeals to me!

But Si!…..I was hopin’ to be able to throw “five ugly sticks” at some on this board! 😆
On the other hand…..Some “geekery” would probably appeal to those same aforementioned board members too! 😆

Some of us may be “ugly on the outside,” but we’re all beautiful on the inside.

ParticipantI like the idea of being able to customise the colours/colors of the new proposed site, but I was wondering if it would be possible to take it step further and include another add on feature. Knowing how you like to use the democratic process and I’m sure voting on this would show how popular this accessory would be. so….. any chance of a David Day filter?

Don’t take all that I say on a “serious note”! Just being the C of B! 😆

ParticipantSooooo…..
Not to make light of ANY of the phenomenal work that Si does on this site, or to belittle anything Board-related, but……
Does this mean that we will all have to re-register,
… get new names, 😮 … make up new … I mean, copy our old profiles,
… restart our posting count,… Etc. Etc. Etc.?????
Trust me, we are all as loyal as Irish Setters, and we will do anything to keep this Board up and running smoothly for Si’s sake, but, hey, we’d like to keep intact as many of our traditions, superstitions, quirks, idiosyncrasies etc., as possible. Face it…us old people hate change. But it doesn’t mean we can’t.
Oh, and I likely idea of a Dreadlock Dave Filter 😆

KeymasterGood question. If I can do it properly, then no, you won’t have to re-register.
I’ve been making some progress, so I’ll have a trial run over the weekend with a new Board and see how it translates over. All being well, all the old posts should still be there too.
I’ll keep you all posted.

ParticipantWhilst there is nothing particularly wrong with the current website, if a new site were to be like the recent DDD website, it would be fantastic. That has a fresh, crisp feel to it, and with the integration to social networks it allowed people to get involved without the need to sign up separately. Can’t say I feel any need to choose my own colour scheme, but if you want to add the option because you know how to and will enjoy implementing it, then go for it. Maybe we can all have some fun trying to come up with the worst combination of colours!

ParticipantAs far as a change to the site, why not? I’ve grown to like the current set-up but I know Si will come up with something that everyone likes, or you can keep it the way it is now. The graphic work he has been working on lately and previewed for us on FB is nothing short of amazing! I echo Jonathan as well, the DDD site is fantastic and if the new Bruuuce.com mimics that, all the better!

On the other hand…..I have a feelin’ that the new website will be even better!
A “Dreadlock Dave” filter? I’m all for it! 😆 Seems “Dreadlock Dave” gets a little too much “irrational exuberance” every now
and then! 😆Still havin’ a ball!

ParticipantHey Si.
Will content get lost in the transition? I’ve always liked the touches like the Bruce Base and the Lyric Interpretations etc.
July 9, 2011 at 8:58 am #32777Si Twining
KeymasterHey AJ
Good question – almost all content will make the switch over to the new site.
The only parts I’m having problems with are the Bruce Base. The set lists will remain, but the searchable database is what I’m struggling with – i.e. the facility to look for every show played in Virginia, every show featuring Harbor Lights etc at the click of a button. I hope to crack it soon.
I’ve worked out how to move the Board, so that’s not a concern.
Some areas, such as the gallery and the concert ratings, will hopefully be improved.
Keep the questions coming – it’s helpful for me to see what is important to include and to build on.

KeymasterYou’ll see from the front page that the wheels are in motion… might be due sooner, but for a disaster this morning (I lost almost everything I’d been working on for two weeks! Thank goodness for backups, however old they may be!)
Quick advice from you all needed if possible – since the new site will be something of a reboot, how do you think we should deal with the polls that have been running on the site for the last 13 years? You’ve voted on favourite tracks etc for each album – do we retain those stats for the new site, or in keeping with “restarting”, do we just report those votes and see what you all think now, after the first 25 years are up?
What do you all think?
August 1, 2011 at 12:20 am #32779MVF
ParticipantI, personally, would like to see if there are “gonna be some changes made”. I know that my favorite BRH songs vary week by week, and sometimes hour by hour. If at all possible, I think it would be really cool to see how tastes have changed as the Bruce community has evolved and “matured”. 😆
We might even do one of those “if you were stranded on a desert island, which five Hornsby recordings would you take?” polls. Just for the record, mine would be: —Here Come The Noisemakers; Bride of Noisemakers; Hornsby & Skaggs, and two copies of my Biltmo’ Sho’ 2002 show bootleg ( just in case something happens to the first one). Oh, and I would give up a few days’ rations/supplies in order to carry all those extra batteries to keep my Walkman up and running. After all, music is food for the soul.
Well, anyway, that’s what I would do….

Eleven days and counting….. 😆
August 2, 2011 at 9:16 pm #32780Si Twining
KeymasterThink I agree with you, MVF… just report back on the first findings and then reboot to see what people think now. Kind of like a retrospective.
Anyone else want to chime in?
August 2, 2011 at 10:37 pm #32781treah
ParticipantI like the retrospective idea,too.
I’d like to think my my musical taste has broadened since responding to some of the older polls. As MVF said, it would be interesting to see if/how everyone else’s opinion has changed.
