An article in this past Sunday’s newspaper covered Ricky Skaggs’ new CD, and gave a brief synopsis of his career. They wrote that he had recently put out a new Bluegrass CD with “rock star Bruce Hornsby”. This phrase struck me as strange. I know you absolutely cannot pigeon-hole Bruce into any one genre, but “rock star” has NEVER come to mind. What are your thoughts??
:I’d have to agree he Bruce does a variety of music, but I don’t see him as a Rock star..more of a musician who has a talent for lots of areas.

Mr. Hornsby does perform ‘rock’ music and he is a ‘star’, so I have no problem calling him a ‘rock star’. Considering that there is no one organization charged with rigidly defining such a phrase, it really makes no difference to me. I believe there is a video game company out there that calls itself, ‘Rockstar Games’, and they don’t even really make music. So if a videogame maker can bill itself as a ‘rockstar’ & it doesn’t even really create music, then surely one can call Mr. Hornsby a ‘rock star’. It doesn’t bother me one bit.

I guess you;d have to consider him somewhat of a “pop star”, since he had hits on the “pop charts”. The problem with him, and a lot of artists, is that they cross so many boundaries. Even though he’s done both bluegrass and jazz albums in thepast year and has mventured into those realms many times, he’s not a jazz star or a bluegass star. For want of a better phrase or term, I guess rock star is general and mainstream enough to work.
Now that we know he’s a rock star, it’s time that we start figuring out who to lobby and then pursuing the course to make sure he gets into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when eligible on the 25th anniversary of “The Way It Is.”

I think “Rock Star” is the same reference as “Pop Star” if I had to guess the general reference of the writer.
I’ve thought often whether Bruce will make into the RxR Hall of Fame and I think he’s so well regarded by fellow popular musicians, is such an accomplished muscian, and has had commercial success that he should be inducted.
