When I play Bruce’s music for someone who hasn’t heard it before, many of them will say, “His music makes you think.”

While dicussing music with someone I’ve just met,the subject of jazz is introduced and they say, “It makes you think.”

A friend of mine who is originally from Senegal was listening to a radio station featuring country music from the ’80s and while giving his impressions of the music,he said,”It makes you think.”

What does this often used phrase really mean in relation to music?

I think it means that it distinguishes it from most of today’s music, which certainly does not make you think… i.e. mindless drivel.

On thing that I love about Bruce’s music is that it not only makes you think but it also can have different meanings depending on who listens to it. Everybody can find some personal relationship to it.

I think René said it best back in 1637, when he wrote, “Cogito, ergo sum.” So no, Mr. Hornsby’s music does not make me think. I am in a constant state of thought/thinking, with or without music.

And, of course, there’s the line that Terry Kath speaks at the end of the first movememnt of “It Better End Soon” on the “Chicago II” album: “Now, just think about it!”
