KeymasterPlease leave your JV appreciation here… I’ll pass the link onto him when there’s enough up.
Just to give you a prod, I’m putting up live doses of JV shining for the Noisemakers for the next seven days…!

ParticipantHey J.V.!
We’re gonna miss you big in the Pacific Northwest this summer, my friend! Not only are you a phenomenal performer on stage, a shining light in Bruce’s show, but a genuinely wonderful human being to hang with after….
Thanks for both your excellent chops and your kind heart! Hope to see you again soon!

ParticipantJ.V. is my favorite bass player out there today. He really makes the Noisemakers shows for me.

ParticipantHere’s a story from the archives. A classic moment in Bruce history that should never be forgotten!
At a show at Biltmore summer of ‘2004, Bruce takes a mike in the middle of a song, places it in front of JV and makes him sing! 😆 You should have seen the look on JV’s face as he sang. 😆 It was a classic moment that I will never forget!
JV thanks for all you do and being so friendly! You add a dimension to NoiseMakers with your bass that nobody else could do! I enjoy watching you play! You da man!
(Hey JV! Working on that singing voice?)

Lake Lanier, GAPS As a trivia question, what was that song at Biltmore that JV sang background vocals too?

Participanttheres some mean bass playing on that spider fingers dose that was up recently and I’ve always enjoyed J.V.s playing – also the face-making in the middle of “the way it is” on the 3nights DVD – great stuff
Kind regards

ParticipantI think most people like me who have no musical talent and don’t speak the language usually overlook the contributions of the bass player. But J.V.’s so good and so genuinely personable that everyone has to take notice. How many other bass players can pull off solos the way he does???
After meeting him briefly in Chattanooga a couple of years ago, I told him on his Web site’s guest book that I think he must have the best karma possible, and I think that still holds true. Plus, I understand he has family ties to Tennessee… that can only be a plus!
By the way, the upright bass player for Ricky Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder, Mark Fain, is no slouch himself. And he’s from my hometown!

ParticipantI love J.V.’s playing on any bluegrass version of Jacob’s Ladder! Rainbow’s Cadillac (8/15/06-Knoxville,TN) and Talk Of The Town (8/24/06-Wolf Trap) are two other unforgettable J. V. moments in my book. J.V.’s contagious enthusiasm and joy of playing his instrument constantly shine through; I think I enjoy those things most of all. Thanks J.V.!

Participantjv is such a gracious and friendly person. he took time to talk to visit with me before the noisemakers show in boulder, co last year. we drove up from albuquerque, nm to see the show and he thanked us for making the long trip. what a nice person he was and made us feel very appreciated as fans. this band is the best in talent and fan appreciation. i wish i could just follow them around all year!

ParticipantDo yourself a favor! Check out Noismakers!
On Great Divide, after “Bobby Reed on the saxaphone”, listen to JV’s bass solo! Now that’s “down and dirty”! I love it!
Also on Noisemakers is, “All I want from tomorrow is to play with JV everyday”.
What song is that from? What a great bass player! You don’t see many six string bass players. Most play four. Some play five, but JV is da man!

What song is that from?]
That is from Jacob’s Ladder. I smile every time I hear that line!
But what’s the answer to your first JV trivia question? The only song I could think of was Michael Row The Boat Ashore, but I know that’s not it.

KeymasterI was there for JV’s mini rendition of Rainbow’s Cadillac… also his “Michael Row The Boat Ashore”. Some evil so-and-so put a video of that around the internet once…
I also heard JV and Sonny sing Take Out The Trash in one of the tent shows – I forget which one.

ParticipantI saw JV at the show at the Biltmore a few years back for the first time. I was very impressed by his playing style and how he looked like he was having a blast. Which I am sure that he was. The Noisemaker shows would not be the same without JV!
June 19, 2007 at 2:14 pm #28912gdwoman
ParticipantI’ve seen JV sing a few times – Take Out the Trash at the tent (I think it was Hyannis, Si); Michael Row the Boat Ashore in West Hampton, NY and he did that Chaka Kahn rap in Virginia. JV insists he can’t sing, but I think he should give himself more credit.
As far as “appreciation” goes, JV is really one of the most delightful people I know. He’ll deny it to the end, but we all know it’s true!

ParticipantJ.V. is awesome!
Great bass player, doing what he loves. And what a great smile! That guy cheers me up every time I view “3 Nights”, or one of Si’s video doses, especially the one with the pink wig. (You all gotta see that one!)
And master bass player J. V. is absolutely excellent about responding to those who drop him a line on his website. He gets right back to you and seems to smile right through his replies.
At the Biltmore House (the “Vandy Palace”) I observed he was just having a blast looking out over the crowd. What he explained to me later was the awesome effect the rear stage lighting produced, casting his silhouetted shadow in very LARGE form on to the side of the House! Said that he felt like the “Count” looming over the estate!
But what great playing and unsurpassed style and skill J. V. exhibits at each performance! Keep on, Master Thumpin Smilin Bass Man!

ParticipantI agree whole-heartedly with all the comments made on here, J.V. is a real gent! You can see from the way he plays (and the huge grin on his face!) that he loves what he does, and he loves the fans to show their appreciation too. I saw him talking to fans at the Biltmore a couple of years ago, laughing and joking with people who’d just gone up to him to say “hello”. He seems to have time for everyone.
I think it’s great how Bruce and J.V. often “compete” against each other on stage, trying to catch one another out. It’s all done in good humour of course. If any of you have listened to the ’05 show in Chattanooga, you can hear Bruce ribbing J.V. as they’re about to play “Nobody There But Me”. It seemed J.V. wasn’t familiar with the bass line.
Si should’ve put up the video of J.V. playing in Belgium with the winner of their “Pop Idol” contest a couple of years ago. That was a hoot.
Stay cool J.V.

ParticipantConfession time!!!
For the longest time, I thought Bruce’s bass player was named “Poppy Alexander”, and that there was another one named “Toby” (wasn’t until ‘Roots’ was recently re-released that I ‘got’ that one). Ah, to be so young and naive again……….

Does anyone know why Bruce used to call J.V. this? Indeed, is this nickname still used?
June 22, 2007 at 8:25 pm #28917Si Twining
KeymasterFrom an interview with JV – https://bruuuce.com/jv.htm:
Forgive my ignorance – who or what is “Poppy Alexander” ?!!?!
Poppy is a guy that Bruce went to school with. Somehow that name was transfered to me.June 22, 2007 at 10:41 pm #28918Si Twining
KeymasterJ.V.’s characteristic response, which he asked me to pass on, was:
JV wrote:thanks everyone for the kind words. I just wish I could live up to them.June 27, 2007 at 5:29 pm #28919Victor
ParticipantJV stole Jim Cloffington’s woman! 😮
