ParticipantGood Morning,
Bruce stopped by in the great Pacific Northwest for another solo casino show. This time closer to where I live. The only real complaint that I would have is that my 9 year old daughter can’t join in on any of the fun because all these casino shows are for 21 and over only (Boo hiss!) That aside, it was another good performance. The setlist:
Resting Place, White Wheeled Limousine, Song from the latest album (contains the line He’s looking for me…), Mandolin Rain (Minor Key), Valley Road, The Way It Is, Shadow Hand, Rainbow’s Cadillac (done with an old ragtime piano riff), End Of The Innocence, This Too Shall Pass, What The Hell Happened To Me, New Song from the upconing musical (Soon Enough??), Spider Fingers, Encore: Nobody There But Me
Of course this is the condensed version. There were the usual jazzy jams and other embedded tunes such as a drinking song that I didn’t know the title to during WWL. This will have to do for my Bruce fix for the summer as I will not be able to make any of the band shows out east. Perhaps one or two of those will end up on the Brucehornsbylive site. One can always hope!

ParticipantJim —
Dou you recall anything in particular about the new tunes? Riffs, melodies, lyrical turns of phrase, etc?
Or…how did the new songs strike you? Didja like ’em?T

ParticipantThe first new song was a bit dark, sounded like it was about a gangster (although I will say that I am not too big into lyrics so I am probably way off there) and as Bruce freely admitted, had some dissonant elements to it. It was still a good tune in my book, but it will not go down among my favorites based on the first listen anyway. All that said, I will have to say that I am certainly not one to show up to hear the hits (an example is that one of my favorites is “This Too Shall Pass”). The new musical song was a sad story about how someone went through life and let things continually fall apart on him (i.e. Soon enough his wife would no longer be there). I do not remember the specific lyrics although they were clearly sung and the sound was really good where I was sitting so I could clearly hear them which is not always the case. Unfortunately it has been three busy days since the show and memory fades fast… The tune definitely fit into the Broadway show tune catagory (as intended, of course) and had that feel to it. Of course it will be interesting to see how these new tunes sound on the album versus the solo piano version which always has its own feel. Hope this helps somewhat. Enjoy any upcoming shows you may be able to attend.

ParticipantThanks for the details…can’t wait to hear the new stuff, or perhaps I should say the “new stuff that I’ve not heard before.”
I don’t think that a show is in the works for moi this summer…this closest would be in Peekskill NY, which from S.E. VT is a bit of a drive: about 3 hours or so. That said, I can’t rule it out as the better half is from that area of NY and we don’t have anything planned that week, so…
Speaking of the Snoq. show, has anyone seen the review of the show that someone posted to the BH site guestbook? Just for convenience, here it be (cut and paste stylee):
Just saw your show at the Snoqualmie Casino. IT SUCKED. I’ve seen you many times over the years..always great until last night. It was a funeral, no head bobbing, toe tapping, hand clapping. Just puzzled looks from the audience. I almost fell asleep. What was up with that. I expected new and different material, not a bunch of rehashed old stuff. You didn’t dissappoint me there. But my God what happened to great piano work? More than Money wasted you wasted my time and for you it won’t happen again. I’ve spent a lot of money over the decades supporting and enjoying your music. With that comes some expectation of coming away from a show feeling good.
Hah! Either this person has got the most deadpan sense of humor and/or is one of BH’s buds taking the piss out of him, or the BH fan brigades just lost a member fo’ sho’! 😮 😆

That has to be someone playing a joke on Bruce. Opening with Resting Place and WWL is enough to get you on your feet and groovin’. That guy must have shown up late. What happened to great piano work? Please. I’m not buying that one.

ParticipantI will have to say that the show had a quieter feel than many of the previous ones that I have seen. There definitely seemed to be enough “great piano work” to satisfy me and some of the notable change-ups such as the ragtime Rainbow’s Cadillac was a cool change that I thought was really good, but the other person may not have liked, who knows? It’s all personal preference and even Bruce can’t satisfy all of the people all of the time. The WWL is definitely a band song and perhaps a bit much to take on with the solo piano, but again, I was all to happy to see him give it a shot.

ParticipantSounds like the guy who went to the solo show…hasn’t seen a solo show or doesn’t apperciate a solo show for what it is.
I think Bruce is very magical in what he can make the piano do during a solo show. Its great whether with the band or solo. But hey thats my opinion…personally I’d make the dude sit and listen to “Try Anything Once” from the “Big Swing Face” Cd on my mp3 player then tell me you don’t like Bruce’s show.. 😆

On the other hand…..That guy (or girl) is entitled to his (or her) opinion no matter how wrong he (or she) is! 😆
That’s my story and I’m stickin to it! 😆
