Thanks to a bet with some people at work, I’ve been collecting recorded versions of Stairway To Heaven. Don’t ask why, the truth woul scare you, although it has nothing to do with, well, never mind. I found a web site that has 101 diffferent versions, which I have downloaded. Not wanting to rest at that, I thought, “hmm… I wonder if Bruce ever played that or toyed aroiund with it in a concert”. I went to the site to check the Bruce Base, but it’s gone =======;0 Help, help, help. Does anyone know the answer? And, if the answer is “yes”, does anyone have a recording of it that they would be willing to share. If the answer is “no”, could we all apply ourselves to the goal of getting him to play it by constantly hounding him, uh, er, requesting it at every show?

I have a Noisemaker tease of it somewhere. I recall a guy in the crowd requesting it as a joke and the band played a bit of the intro – JT’s organ is the main part I remember. I don’t know what show it was from and I don’t have it notated on any setlist. Others probably have the show since I got almost all of my shows off bt.etree, but I’ll shuffle some live Bruce on my Zune and see if it comes up.

I’m sure you have the Zappa cover. Ludwig Von 88 had one of the more interesting covers I’ve heard. I also think I have a marching band recording of it somewhere… if you’re into that sort of thing.

Ooh! I hope you can find that. I’d really appreciate it.

The FZ and the Ludwig Von 88 and the Dread Zeppelin and lots of other versions can all be found in MP3 format at: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/05/stairways_to_he.html. There are about 100 of them, plus an MP3 of some guy doing a diatribe about how satanic the song is if you play it backwards, and then he goes off onto KISS and The Beatles and such. Quite an interesting period piece. All 100+ Mp3s fit on a regular CD (data format) with plenty of extra space to spare. Y’all’ll (is that a real woid?) get a kick out of some of them. My faves are the versions by Dolly Parton, The Beatnix (an early-period Beatles cover band from Australia) and another Aussie band doing covers of Doors tunes.
