ParticipantIf you had to pick one song to ditch, which one would it be?
I’m going to need some time to think about it myself, so I’ll report back a bit later with my answer 😆

ParticipantCan we go with 5? Can I get a 5? 1 just doesn’t seem like enough…
1) Big Rumble
I just can’t do it. Every time that tune comes around — SKIP! 😆
4 honorable mentions, thanks for humoring me…the following are also skipped:
2) Preacher 1 & 2 (derivative, somewhat uninspired)
3) Levitate (I know that boomers love “Shawshank,” but seriously BH…plus, the melody’s lacking)
4) Harbor Lights (I dig the chords, can’t stand the lyrics…)
5) Space Is The Place (Sorry, Sonny and JV. Lame funk with more of EC’s pouty-face 3- and 4-note Strat squigglies makes me
wanna hurl.)That’s really about it, which is pretty good (I think) considering the depth of BH’s catalog. I also considered the Skaggs/BH and BH/McBride/Jack DeJ platters but I like all the BH originals contained therein. I didn’t count the live rekkids, nor did I figure in the “Greatest” or “Intersections” although I suppose you could make an argument for inclusion of the latter. Oh, and just now realized that I didn’t take into account the Henley or Raitt collabs. Oh well.
That leaves us with 11 studio albums (by my count) with an average of about 11 tunes per disc with (again, my count) 126 total songs, minus let’s say 10 for non-originals to end up at 116. I don’t like 5 songs out of 116 for a percentage of about 95, so that’s pretty damn good, unless my just-commenced St. Patty’s day celeb has impaired my math. I know that BH is relieved…………… 😆 🙄

ParticipantI could never actually ditch a Bruce song, the only tracks I intentionally skip are the 2 during the 2002 Chastain Park show during which the emcee (Vaughn Springs-sp?) is bantering.
But,
If someone twisted my arm, these are the songs that don’t “catch my fancy”:China Doll
Pastures Of Plenty
End Of The Innocence
Stander On The MountainI think I’m just not musically evolved enough to really appreciate these songs.

I’m the exact same way, but pretend someone says the only way you can continue listening to Bruce is if you ditch one song. Which song would that be?
March 22, 2012 at 3:52 pm #33198MVF
ParticipantThis may get me booted off the board, but…..
The are only four songs that I WILL listen to on “Levitate”…..
Black Rats of London
Prairie Dog Town
Simple Prayer
Low CountryI just can’t get into the rest of the album. I don’t know if he wandered a little too far away from the “Range” days, if I have so many more selections from his repertoire that I can be choosy, or if I’m just getting old and crotchety.

ParticipantI could do without “Till the Deaming’s Done”
Doesn’t fit the rest of the album…….

ParticipantAfter years of listening to the Grateful Dead and jazz music…I think that I hear music differently than others anyways if that makes sense. I am pretty musically evolved to get what Bruce does with his music and where he makes the band go with his songs. I always wondered how the Range crowd still linger around after he ditched that playing style so many years ago. I imagine his Dead and jazz experience opened up a new view on how he wanted to play and write his music instead of the poppiness of the Range days. Don’t get me wrong I like the Range poppy stuff but its the jamband jazzy stuff that got me into him.
…but if I had to pick something that I can label my least favorite its these two:
The ‘minor key’ version of Mandolin Rain
Preacher in the Ring pt 2Both of these songs are slowed down versions of already great songs.
The original version of Mandolin Rain is just too awesome to water down….so don’t fix what ain’t broke.
Preacher Part One is a nice fast paced jam but doesn’t make sense to have him play part one and then play a slow repeat right afterwards.Other than those two songs…I love all of Bruce’s work.
-Hey T…how can you not like the lyrics to Harbor Lights…Bruce telling us a story about trying to get laid…thats poetry brah.

ParticipantOkay, I’ve been silent long enough. 😈 I’ve got to weigh in with my two cent’s worth.
And before SiTwi smacks me again via PM,
let me state that I respect everyone’s opinion and think no more or no less of my SiBs & BiBs because they don’t think exactly like I do –in fact, Dreadlock Dave would point out that we’d all be screwed if ANYBODY thought exactly like I do!!!!! 😆
A.J. — You could do without “Til the Dreaming’s Done” ????? 😮 Okay, maybe it’s because I’m emotionally attached to it. I used to do a lot of traveling for the National Education Association, and one of the “must haves” on each trip was my cassette player. The only way I could get to sleep in a strange place was to crank up side two of “Scenes From the Southside”. By the time it rolled around to TTDD, I was pleasantly sleepy (in a good way) and on my way to slumberland. I especially swooned over the accordion “rifts” at the end of stanzas. It has become one of my “comfort” songs. But that’s just me.
**************
GG — (1) I agree about the original version of Mandolin Rain being the definitive (although the version with Ricky Skaggs is a close second).
(2) Yeah, I could do without part two of “Preacher in the Ring”, although the lyrics do help flesh out the story initiated in part one.
(3) I cut my teeth on the Range. 😮 Yes, the original recordings of some songs can be “poppy”, but recent live versions are not only pleasant to listen to, but showcase the growth of an artist. I “stuck around” after the Range, the Bruce & Molo stint, through the Jimmy Haizlip/John D’Earth/John Molo era, the Grateful Dead faze, pairings with Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown & Shawn Colvin, Ricky Skaggs, Bela Fleck, and others, on into the Noisemakers time, not to mention his forays into jazz, bluegrass, musical theater, etc., because it blows my mind to watch how versatile Bruce can be with new AND old material – not to mention when he covers other artists’ songs – and it seems I fall in love all over again every time I hear Bruce stretch his wings into a new direction.
But that’s just me.

ParticipantHey MVF
I wasn’t doubting your Hornsby resume and wasn’t aiming my ‘range’ comment at you or anybody that frequents this site. I am pretty sure anybody that took the time to join this site and comments on this board are real fans. My comment was aimed at the people that leave the ‘one star’ reviews on:

Go to these sites and list the reviews by lowest to highest.
You’ll not only get a cheap laugh and pissed off at the same time but you will also understand ‘who’ my comment was aimed at.I am happy for you though MVF that you didn’t give up on Bruce throughout his David Bowiesque music career

This grinds my gears:
Quote:I loved the interaction Bruce had with the audience. I had never heard his sense of humor before and that was fun. Clearly, he is an awesome talent and when he played the long piano runs, it was great. I was disappointed with his hit songs because he played them much differently than the records. From a fan’s standpoint, I’d rather hear an extended version that is close to the recording with some background or complimentary music. The lesser known songs he sang gave us a chance to hear his unique music styles. It could be that I should have known what to expect from the title, (An Evening with Bruce Hornsby) but I was expecting a band to accompany him. That would have been a much better experience for me.I was at this show. It was actually my first Bruce solo piano show. I was absolutely blown away. I’m the type of music fan who tends to grow more of an appreciation for the members of the band, than the front man himself. Obviously I adore Bruce, but every single member of the Noisemakers is an incredible musician. I would take a Noisemakers show over a solo show any day, but that solo show was out of this world. To read a comment like the one above where A) this person is the antithesis of what Bruce wants in a fan and
too stupid to realize that it said “SOLO SHOW” just about every place you could have purchased a ticket, really gets at me!
May 7, 2012 at 5:22 pm #33204MVF
Participant😳 Okay, again, I need to take my foot out of my mouth and remember to NOT comment of that which I know nothing. 😳
I know that a goodly number of people at any given Bruce concert are not pleased when he plays a song differently, or “goes off” on one of his (wonderful) piano forays. But, as the man says of those people, “frankly, I’m not here for them”. I applaud him for being confident enough of his music that a few ole’ sticks in the mud don’t faze him a bit. But that’s just what I think.
As to solo shows- Let me state first that I base the following on two solo shows and one show with Bruce + the Virginia Symphony.
As much as I truly loved The Range (John Molo in particular
), I am “in love” with the Noisemakers!!!! 😮 Not that I am trying to brag (or trying to rehash my Bruce resume), but I have had the chance to interact with the band members on numerous occasions and there is not a pretentious bone in the whole group. And, I think they are not only some of the most talented musicians that I have ever heard, but as a group, they mesh in a way that is rarely seen. But that’s just what I think.

Miss Virginia FormerBTW GG,
I wasn’t trying to bore anyone with my “Bruce resume”. I was simply trying to get across where I was coming from. 😳May 8, 2012 at 3:23 pm #33205molomolomolo
ParticipantIf I had to drop a song from Bruce’s selection I’d be hard-pressed to find one post-“Spirit Trail”. More than likely it would be one from “The Way It Is” or “Night on the Town” as I’m just not into that sound quite as much as his latter works. That being said, and I may take some hits for this one, but Valley Road is probably my least favorite of any of his songs. I’ve heard versions of it that I like, but the album version doesn’t work for me.

ParticipantNow, see, Molo3, if you could make it to the Norfolk show, I could take you on my infamous “Bruce Hornsby’s Williamsburg” tour and show you The Valley Road 🙄 Maybe it would “flesh out” the studio version. 😆
No, really, I have to agree you on VR as well as a few others from that era. I guess that’s why we love live shows so much!!!!

I’m curious if you are referring to “Mystery Train” or “It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry.”

ParticipantPrairie Dog Town and Defenders Of The Flag. I narrowly missed the latter by a day twice this tour, but caught the former at every show (including actual dogtown 200 yards away at the MN Zoo!)[Oh I forgot how much I hate Big Rock Candy although the end of Candy Mtn Run is a great jam, and this year I’m ready to elevate the original Mandolin Rain to my hate list] Never been a fan of Hooray For Tom or What The Hell Happened, but there’s just so much more I like that was played 2002-2009 but is gone now.

ParticipantThe music gods are vengeful…. 😈
Previously on this post, I MIGHT have mentioned that “Levitate” was my least favorite CD, that I only really liked four tracks off it. Well……..
On a recent road trip of 12 hours, my car CD player ate that particular CD and refused to give it back. So for 12 hours straight, I listened to ALL of “Levitate.
I will never again bad mouth anything Hornsby… 😆
