KeymasterR.S.’ solo in Continents Drift is the standout for me so far, and that’s with no sentiment attached. It’s stunning.
I’ve put a first impressions poll on the front page for you all to vote on

ParticipantKickin in old school with Levitate!
Hard not to gush about this record. Been waiting a long time for it. Great work Bruce and band. Bruce, lyrically you sound more like Zevon every day (Black Rats). Boffo. Toe tappin, ass-kickin good time. And welcome back Floyd (with the shout outs on BROL). Peace, A homeboy and a fan since ’86. Y’all head over to Verve and give BRH his props under reviews for the album. David Wiggs Seattle, WA PS: Knopfler guest appearance on the next record?

KeymasterI’m hearing Wharf Rat undertones in Continents Drift…
August 5, 2009 at 9:21 pm #31228daverich
ParticipantWell I voted for it’s a great work.
Had a bit of a break ‘cos the wife wanted to watch some tv thing,.– but back on it now.
So far the weakest track for me is the title track,- but I can see that it’s probably a bit hit for Kobe fans
Kind regards

ParticipantThank you, thank you! How great that we can listen to the whole album over a month before it is released. I’m loving it.

Participantsi_twining wrote:I’m hearing Wharf Rat undertones in Continents Drift…Yeah, I hear that too. And I agree, the guitar solo is wonderful – very much the RS we loved to hear in the live shows. It stands out on its own, but there’s a feeling of sadness to think he is no longer with us. What a legacy to leave behind though. Nice one, RS.

ParticipantAbsolutely Amazing…don’t even know if that explains it. I love this one. I think I have a new favorite that will be in my collection.
Been a Bruce fan for over 20 years and he gets better all the time.
So glad they released the songs. I have shoulder surgery coming up tomorrow and at least will have something great to listen to while I recover over the next three months.
GREAT WORK BRUCE!!!

ParticipantThank you so much for the heads up re: the Verve stream.
I absolutely LOVE everything I’ve heard thus far.
I haven’t voted in the poll yet–I want to listen to the whole album before making a decision–but I’m leaning very heavily, based on what I’ve heard thus far, toward “Best Yet.”
OMG, I’m so grateful for new Bruce.

ParticipantThis record is simply astounding, and an easy one for me to say wholeheartedly, “Best Ever”.

ParticipantTAKAVL thanks man! Today’s forum hero!
This is the Bruce album I’ve been waiting for. This is the closest a studio album has ever come to capturing what Bruce does live.
The 4 opening songs are absolutely killer!
Si, it would be a crime if Bruce doesn’t bring back Wharf Rat to play with Continents Drift. Continents>Wharf Rat>Black Rats anyone?
I hear traces of the great James McMurtry in Prairie Dog Town… you know… if he did hip hop.
CYCLONE!!! WOW! Bruce rehearsed this with The Other Ones (how long ago was that??). I guess this song needed some time to grow and mature. IT WAS WORTH IT!!!
Something from BSF needs to be played with Space is the Place… Place in the Sun??
I was wondering what Bruce was gonna do with the “loves our president” lyric in Low Country with Obama in office now… he made sure there was no confusion!
Horses, hogs, and chickens and dogs!August 6, 2009 at 7:51 am #31237daverich
Participantlovin that cover art too..

ParticipantI love that it sounds like the boys just playing in a room. Definetely more of a band record and live feel. Haven’t had a chance to listen all the way through yet, but this one will be in contention for best ever.
I’m thinking my next request will look something like this…
Cyclone>Crown of Jewels>Cyclone>Pastures of Plenty

KeymasterHere’s a teaser for you… which song was co-written by JV and Sonny Emory?

Participantsi_twining wrote:Here’s a teaser for you… which song was co-written by JV and Sonny Emory?Co-written by JV? I’m guessing that rules out “Black Rats of London”. 😆

ParticipantUpdate: I voted “Best Ever”
I love the way it has been recorded/engineered, as well.August 6, 2009 at 8:55 pm #31242treah

Excuse me for being so abrupt, but I’ve GOT to listen to the album again-especially “Invisible.”

ParticipantI voted for “Great Work.” It’s an overall awesome sound, but I don’t know if Bruce will ever out-do his two-CD magnum opus, Spirit Trail. The work’s just so consistent throughout that double CD.
That said, there are some great individual songs on this record. I agree with the guy who told me it’s 75 percent WOW! and 25 percent WTF!??! I mean, who IS that rapping kid on Space Is the Place? But I’m sure those 3 or 4 songs that give me pause will grow on me. It will just take a little time to appreciate them.
Cyclone and Continents Drift are my two favorites so far. Continents is stuck in my head already. Low Country has been addictive since he started playing it live. Black Rats is joyous; heard it in Boulder a year ago and have missed it.
Did I hear a touch of Shawn Colvin or somebody in Invisible?

ParticipantSi, did Sonny and JV co-write Prarie Dog Town?
August 7, 2009 at 12:03 am #31245molomolomolo
ParticipantJust finished listening to “Levitate”. What an oustanding collection of songs! I agree with Vic, I don’t think anything will knock “Spirit Trail” off the perch at #1, but this one is in the running for sure!
There is so much to sink your teeth into on this record, I’ll probably listen to it 3 more times tonight. I definitely hear a resemblance to “Funhouse” on “Prairie Dog Town”. That would be a great combo in concert!
I have more to add about “Levitate” but it is going to have to wait for some other time. I have to go listen again. I can’t wait to have this record in my hands!!
PS.-Monica, hope all goes well with your surgery and rehab. Take it easy

ParticipantI was thrilled to hear the download and was wondering how I was going to make it another six weeks for the cd (aside from the new Robert Cray coming out) and not being anywhere near the Atl/NC/NYC shows. So thanks for making this available Bruce & Verve!
I love the album and it’s everything I looked forward for. I’ve listened to it three or four times and I’ll probably warm up to it more. Because I enjoy every album, I responded “Standard Bruce fare, but I loved it”. I put it on par with “Spirit Trail”, but I like “Halcyon Days” a little more, and I like “Harbor Lights” & “Hot House” even more. I like the writing on those two a bit more and drum machines & “hoedown tunes” are a bit less prevalent on those. I’ll continue listening to it though and I’m grateful to be able to hear it at this early date.
