Si, did Sonny and JV co-write Prarie Dog Town?

    That’s my guess, too.

It was actually “Space is the Place”.

Although, I believe I hear Sonny’s voice in Prairie Dog Town.

I gots to keep it real, as they say —

    I ain’t wit’ it. 😯

As such, I voted “maybe it’ll grow on me.” P’raps my initial reactions were due to trying to listen to it at the Verve site, on a laptop, while either Cartoon Network (day) or the Red Sox/Yanks game is on (night). In other words, not on a stereo and giving the album more concentration.

Be that as it may, initial reactions from a couple of listens — sounds, to me, properly IMHO’d and all ;)
like my least fave cuts from both “Big Swing Face” and the Skaggs cd combined, with little bits of “Tom,” “What The Hell,” and “Heir” sprinkled on top. What’s missing are the immediate ‘grabbers,’ like “Trash,” “Candy Mtn.,” “Circus,” “Dreamland,” etc. I’m finding the lyrics to be clunky in some cases, obvious in others. The music itself is a bit ordinary, with most of the ornate flash and complexity of albums from “Harbor” to “Halcyon” not easily apparent….

Hopefully, ‘this too shall pass’ when I experience said cd on a proper piece of playback equipment, and/or hear the tunes live…

I’m sorry to be such a bummer, I rilly rilly am 😳 😥 but that’s just the way I feel, man!

Trey, down in de dumps :?

Yeah, that was what I was going on. I guess I should have known from Sonny’s “Cosmic Squirrel Rap” that it was “Space is the Place.” :-)

This album is the deal of the century. I preordered it in June for 12.99, and I think I would have paid that for “Black Rats of London.” Man, I am loving that song.

This might be the large amount of coffee I’ve already had talking, but here is my request idea:

Prairie Dog Town>I’ve Got A Feeling(Beatles)>Prairie Dog Town

Have I completely lost it,or would these songs actually go together?

No need to apologise, Trey :D … the thing to bear in mind with Bruce’s records is that the studio verison accounts for maybe 10% of the song.

Take that same song out onto a live stage (e.g. Funhouse), and you’ll forget you ever heard the CD!

I would be willing to bet it will grow on you, brother. Definitely check it out again, this time with some quality headphones on. I did notice the gain was way up when I initially got on the Verve’s site. I had to tinker with the EQ to make it sound proper.

Ha! :) I was thinking of the same tune…although I’ve always liked the album version, you and I are of the same opinion, fo’ sho’. Both “Funhouse” and “King of The HIll” pick up a sense of urgency and danger in a live setting, not to mention interesting cover mutations!

Definitely a plus when the live rendition improves on the studio cut…here’s hoping that occurs in this case,

Yeah, that’s what I’m saying and hoping…thanks for your support! 😆 Maybe something is lost in translation? Nothing sounds good on a laptop…and/or with the kids watching “Pokemon” in the background…or with the Sox getting blasted by a sloppy but victorious Yankees! 👿 ;)

I’m usually skeptical of the whole “it’ll grow on you” thang when it comes to tunage…sometimes it happens, sometimes not…more often with classical shite than with pop, I’ve found, but hey, there are usually exceptions to the rule.

Man, I can totally sympathize with you there. I find myself walking around work humming some tune from “Blues Clues” or whatever other children’s programming that has been playing that day/night. And for cripe’s sake, turn off the Red Sox! That may be what soured your mood when you tried to get into “Levitate”. 😆

And no, nothing sounds all that great on a laptop. Unless said laptop is wired to some house speakers.

Is it telling that one of my favorite tunes on the new record so far is “Paperboy”? There’s nothing sinister hiding in my trunk, I swear!

I have to agree with Mr. Dave Rich as far as the weakest one being “Levitate” for me. While my husband LOVES that song, it’s not wearing well on me. Usually the more I play a song, the more I like it but that’s not the case with this one. Then again, I’m not a Kobe fan. I love all the rest of them but am leaning towards “Continents Drift” as my fave. I drift away when I hear that song. Simply beautiful.

Am I the only one who’s trying like hell not to listen to it now? It almost feels like opening a Christmas present early! I sampled most of the tracks and really enjoyed them, but I kind of look forward to that first listen on the way out of the parking lot at Best Buy (or in this case fresh out of the mailbox if I preorder at Amazon). It’s tough though… I don’t know if I’ll make it.

Heath, I think you may be the only one! 😆 I gave a thought to staying away from the record until it came out, but being on here and reading people’s insights from what they heard, I just couldn’t be left out of the loop! The only drawback is, if Verve pulls the stream of the album off between now and the release date, I may just have a breakdown! 😮 I like the record that much!

    Hey Heath!

I’m there with you! Not going to listen until I can put it on the big speakers and blast my neighbors. I have a reputation to uphold! 😆 Plus a tradition to carry on…..or should I say superstition? :geek:

Bruce did a lot of this new material at the shows I saw recently in the NY area. It’s all tremendous!! We all know Bruce’s commitment to allowing the studio music to evolve in a performance. These terrific new songs are the seeds of music we’ll be enjoying for as long as Bruce continues to tour.

No fair, David! The King of the Board should have his say!

Ah well, I know you’ll love it when you get around to it – in fact I could probably pick out your favourites!

Interesting comment about the live versions vs. the studio recording because when I’ve heard Bruce and band perform “The Black Rats of London” here in Denver last year and then just recently at the Biltmore, I like the live versions much better than the original recording. Go figure. ;)

I’m listening again for what must be the 10th time and “Simple Prayer” is really starting to stand out for me. I love the piano at the beginning and all the way through – it’s a sound we’ve heard on his jazz album, but not in his mainstream work and it sounds brilliant.

I know the stream is set up in such a way as to prevent it, but I’d love to get a download so I can listen to this on my phone too. Guess I’ll have to wait for the CD to have my portable listening.

Speaking of the CD, and Si you may know this, is the album getting an official UK release? Amazon UK only show it as an import at a hefty £15.19. I could quite easily buy from Amazon US but I’d prefer to purchase a UK version to show that it’s being bought here.

I voted “This is great work”. It is hard to compete with his piano work released on previous albums. I understand he didn’t want to concentrate on piano this time. I like signs of modern classical music in this album.

    Hey Si!

In the “Davidian style” as Vic would say, it would be interesting to know what you think my favs would be. 8-) Don’t forget that I have heard a few selections at ATL & Bilmo. Reading Jonathan’s post on Simple Prayer, on the other hand, is very tempting to me to “check in”. :D

As tempting as it may be, I’m going to be a “hold out”! That’s my story and I’m stickin to it! 😆

Hey Heath! You still with me on this one? Make it so! 😆

David, I am a member of the Branch “Davidians,” for sure!

I don’t know what your favorites may be, but in Boulder last night, Mary asked Bruce his favorite. He said he doesn’t have one yet, but the band’s favorite so far is “Here We Are Again.”

That’s one that’s still growing on me personally. :)

Speaking of Boulder, how was it? We expect a full review from you and SMP! :P I can’t wait to hear the program. Did he perform a full setlist’s worth or was he confined to the time frame of the radio show? Thanks in advance!

So far so good… like looking at the presents under the tree waiting for Chirstmas morning. Like I said earlier, I sampled a few seconds of several tracks, but I don’t think it was any worse than rattling the boxes! :D

I’m starting to come around on “Drift,” “P-Dog,” and “Here We Are Again” (or as I call it “Here We Go Again…With Pop Physics,” a lame attempt to connect BH to Whitesnake and well, pop physics!)
I’ve been a fan of “Rats” since first hearing it at Lowell last summer.
