I was at the Sommerville MA solo show last night and thought he was playing an accoustic piano, yet for every key he struck a small red LED light when on over the key. Was he playing an accoustic piano or electric? Also, the synthesizer on top of the piano seemed to play during some songs without him touching the synthesizer keyboard. How does that happen? Great show as always, first time I’ve seen him solo, hope he does more.

Since I’m ignorant about such things, I’m wondering how this setup works, too. In Louisville, the synthesizer wasn’t even set-up properly when Bruce came out. It was sitting on the floor. But Bruce started the show without it until the equipment guys could get it all connected.

Those first couple of songs were great accoustically, as was the entire show. But I did notice the synth “boost” that came later from the Steinway itself or the combination of the Steinway and the synthesizer. I recall a reviewer making passing mention of this effect, also.

Is this solo setup unique to Bruce? I think it works nicely and makes a nice sound.

I think the piano is a hybrid of sorts – I know he has a separate foot pedal that he uses to add a midi-strings effect without using the stand-alone synthesizer.

Hi Casper I too was there. By the way this is my first post new member. I was in row 2 center and couldn’t see the keyboard but there was also a small red light on the floor that mirrored all keystrokes.

Off topic but I’ll add anyway. The seats we ended up with were comps. Our original seats were also row 2 but left against the wall. All we could see were speakers. Complained and we ended up dead center about 30 feet away. Bruce’s booking agent was very accommodating and had no issue at all with upgrading our seats.

    Great evening.

Yamaha have used those cheesy LEDs in their Clavinova series of pianos for a while,- but looking at the one he plays on the 3 nights on the town DVD, it’s an acoustic piano with a midi controller, if it’s not acoustic then it’s a *very* nice electric piano.

I would take the LEDs off though, they’d drive me crazy! hehe.

    Kind regards

Bruce uses a synthesizer on top of the piano as well as whats called a “Piano Bar” that goes over the ends of the keys of the piano to know what notes are being played to add strings and stuf over top, the patch is controlled by that knob he plays with a lot and he volume is controled by a foot pedal.
