David…BIB and Dean of the Road Scholars…

We are sorry that we won’t be making your acquaintance on this trip, but your mission this time, is much more important. Moms are so important, treasure every moment. Your mom knows how special you are and we are lucky enough to get a brief glimpse. We will continue to hold you closely in our thoughts and prayers.

The Lucky-Strike Louisville Party [of 2? 3? 4 1/2?] will give a hearty “BRUUUCE” shout-out on your behalf. Ms. Virginia Former just saved you many BruceBuck$$$

With the very best wishes and good intentions,

    Louisville show–Slight Review

sorry i didn’t get to meet up with any of you for Bowling For Bruce. my wife had to catch a nap after we did some grocery-getting and we didn’t get down there until 6. i hope you all enjoyed 4th Street and i can’t wait to hear the stories of what transpired.

Just got home from the show and trying to compile it all in my head. I made the cardinal sin of forgetting my notepad and pen so i didn’t get to jot down the set in order. i’m sure someone will come through for us. here are a few thoughts about tonight:

So it has been way too long since i saw Bruce last–August of ’01 i believe–but there is no moss gathering on that rolling stone. Bruce was in phenomenal form playing-wise and his voice is as sharp as ever as well.

We were sitting about four rows back center and when i got to my seat i noticed no keyboard on top of the Steinway. i stood up and saw the Korg behind the piano sitting on the floor. I was like, ‘how is he going to pull this off?’ Bruce came out and was like ‘wtf’ when he noticed this as well. so he called for the two guys, one whose name i can’t remember but who produced halcyon days, and they came out and started to put it up there as Bruce started to play. he was like, ‘no, go ahead and put it on,’ and they were like, ‘no, bruce, we don’t want to interrupt the show.’ so he rolled into spider fingers sans keyboard. it was a very comical moment and i was curious to see how Bruce would take it. he took it in stride of course, and after the second song the guys were back out there to set up the keyboard.

i did learn tonight, which may be old news to some but not me, that Bruce is writing a musical for some “big wigs on Broadway” as he put it. he played a song about the lowlands which was requested by “someone here that is in the know”. also he played one from the musical about Donald Trump. it was hilarious and the crowd ate it up. he mentioned the album with Ricky Scaggs coming out next year and played darlin’ cory, another request. he had an impressive stack of requests and said that most if not all were going to be requests tonight so that no one can complain, lol. in the encore he played mandolin rain and then talked about an alternate version he’s recorded (with ricky scaggs i think) and played that too. it was much lower and suited his ability to sing in a low range quite nicely. also, old news to some, but Bruce was recording the show and this led to the ushers being very officious about any recording devices of any kind. i kept trying to take pics with my RAZR and my wife would go, ‘they’re watching you. better put that away.’ so no pics came from the show from me. :(

overall the concert was incredible of course and my wife was blown away by her first Bruce concert. Bruce played about 2 hrs, 20 mins. over two sets.

also something of note for Bruuuce.com fans, Big Rumble got a mention from the stage and Bruce labeled him as famous in some circles and ‘he’s famous to me, anyway,’ and then played WWL as requested by Big Rumble.

i’m off to “Dreamland” now and i’ll wait to hear from the rest who attended tomorrow.

MoloMoloMolo, you missed a massive “B3” party — we filled the Lucky Strike, and I’m thinking about printing-up some T-shirts so everyone in attendance will have a keepsake memento! The Lucky Strike — and 4th Street Live in general — has more giant, flat-screen TVs than NASA; it was quite the place. We missed David and Miss Virginia Former, but a great time was had by all. MMM, you guys missed your chance to bowl with me, “someone in the know” (thanks to Si and everyone who contributes to this site). I do really enjoy that “Having a Ball in the Low Country” song. If anybody wants to e-mail me an mp3 of it, feel welcome. :)

Lola Pelusa is a beautiful person in every way, and the best serving wench / ball handler in the tri-state region! ;) She also learned I’m a pathological liar, which was funny! Hi, Lola! Hope the rest of your solo-show swing is safe and fun! Lola sat near Big Rumble at the “James” Brown Theatre, and it was great to get to shake his hand during the intermission. Definitely a famous guy among Bruuuce circles. I loitered around after the show to try to snag an autograph on my (FREE!) boxed set, but unlike the Merriman party, I didn’t have backstage passes — so I retreated back to 4th Street.

The Korg synthesizer thing was funny and cause for Bruce to mischievously rake Wayne Pooley over the coals. It was interesting to see Bruce switch from the standard Mandolin Rain arrangement into the minor-key version in midstep. Very educational. By the way, Bruce said February for the R&B (Ricky & Bruce) record, which is old news by now, I guess. Si: here’s my set list, erroneous as it may be:

    Set I
Spider Fingers>Questions & Answers (Ornette Coleman)>Spider Fingers, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Song C, Sad Moon, Witchy Woman tease, End of the Innocence>Song H>Danny Boy>End of the Innocence, Darlin’ Cory>Night on the Town, In the Low Country, Donald Trump song, (classical)>The Way It Is.
    Set II
Sticks & Stones, Country Doctor, Gonna Be Some Changes Made, Dreamland, Dreaded Spoon, The Road Not Taken>On the Old Kentucky Shore, White Wheeled Limousine>Long Black Veil, Valley Road>Happy Trails, Rainbow’s Cadillac.
    Encore
Standing on the Moon, Mandolin Rain.

Oh, man!!!! Am I green with envy!! Lola, you know, I’ve always wanted to be Victor’s ball handler, but I’m glad you were able to stand in. 😉
I’m still slated to travel to that Hornsby mecca – Williamsburg— this weekend. I think I’ve scored a lunch date with Mama Hornsby at the Blue Talon. I’ll let you know if I pick up any juicy tidbits.
Spartanburg…..I’m almost positive that it is a definite maybe. Jackie, if you can’t talk your husband into chauffeuring you to the concert, let me know. I’m thinking maybe an overnighter (I have that Monday off school). Anybody else game??? Maybe we can make this one big Bruce Slumber Party!!!! David, Victor, Lola, Molomolomolo, you are definitely invited, too!!! 😈

    Miss Virginia Former!

You just set yourself up for a big slam, but I won’t do it. 😆 I’ll keep it clean. 😉

I will say that I’m glad you’re back. You add some color that we needed!

Still waiting for those pics! Please shoot me an e-mail so we can chat about that and Spartanburg.

My bet is Allisa = Elyce.

    Are we close?

    Is one of us correct?

    Miss Virginia Former,

Wow, that is such a generous offer; I really appreciate the kind thought. Unfortunately, I must decline. My better half and I are getting together with some old friends this weekend to celebrate what we jokingly call my “birth-month” (one day just isn’t enough :) Maybe next time…

Call out one good “Bruuuce!” for me!

We’re trying to figure out your “handle” — as in “treah” = Jackie. The only Pen Pics that seem to fit you would be Elyce or Linda. I thought you were Linda. What’s “in the shadows” mean, then?

Okay, Si Twi, it’s all up to you now! I have posted my Pen Pic. Where’s David’s??????? Lola?????? Jackie??????? How about my Charlotte buddy who gave me that front row ticket for my birthday two years ago at The Ovens??????

Hey, and Victor, just read yours… had a major, major flashback moment when you mentioned the Cas Walker radio show. All of my daddy’s people are from Scott County, TN, and I remember watching the Cas Walker show (and commercials) every time we went to Granny’s house. What a blast from the past!!!

Jackie, I was really counting on meeting up with you in SC for a good, old fashioned slumber party. Oh well. Guess I’ll just have to pillow-fight Victor, Lola, and David by myself………………… 😉

Are you the baby in the hat in the picture with Steve Heitel? The dog in the picture with Will? If either guess is correct, I’m really impressed by your typing skills. 😆

    stuff & things

Miss VA Former: Cas Walker was quite the entrepreneur and showman!
Unfortunately, I won’t be in attendance in Spartanburg. I threw my back out bowling at the Lucky Strike in Louisvegas, so the pillow fight is definitely out as well! :(

Allisa: My research has turned up your last name — ! — but you’ve given me a migraine trying to determine where your photo may be hidden… any more clues?

Victor–sorry to hear about your back. Another reason why i wouldn’t have made the bowling party. bowling has been terrible for my golf game in the past.

I love the sound of the cello and desperately wish I had some musical talent. Sadly, however, I am all but tone deaf.
