The pre-show coolers were unpacked, people were lounging in chairs and on blankets on the grassy hill behind the bleacher-style seats in front of the stage, then the rain, thunder and lightning appeared. The order was given for everyone to find shelter and the concert area was cleared. Old friends were found and new friends were made while taking cover from the storm.

When the mighty downpour subsided, everyone had time to mingle a little more, find their way to their seats or to the area in front of the stage so they would be ready to dance,(Bruce named this group “the devotees” :). ) ,then it was concert time!

Bruce complimented the audience on being “a hearty breed” because we persevered through the storm.

    Highlights:
Bruce mentioned our friend Zann before playing Look Out Any Window

Bobby Read was on fire all night! He really shone on Tango King,Road Not Taken,Valley Road,Prairie Dog Town,Barcelona Mona(of course), and Big Rumble.

High points for JT Thomas included Tango King,Road Not Taken and Valley Road,

Sonny Emory left the crowd awestruck during Barcelona Mona and Big Rumble. We were all trying to follow his hands when he played the washboard on Tropical Cashmere Sweater and Valley Road-an impossible task!

Doug Derryberry showed us his extraordinary skills during Road Not Taken and Prairie Dog Town.

JV Collier impressed us all throughout the evening, but he was really jamming during Go Back To Your Woods,Tango King,Road Not Taken and Prairie Dog Town.

I don’t think the word has been created yet to describe Bruce Hornsby’s playing this past Saturday night, especially during Road Not Taken. Phenomenal? Singularly spectacular? No-not descriptive enough.

    Some of the memorable banter:
*Bruce really liked Monica’s (babytweety2yo) request designed around a medicine bottle for Life in the Psychotropics.

Bruce mentioned that he & his son Keith toured the NC State campus in Raleigh a few months ago. Keith was considering transferring from UNC-Asheville to the Raleigh school. He ultimately chose to attend LSU :(. (“Keith was almost a ‘Wolfpacker'”)

*Barcelona Mona was played in honor of Branford Marsalis, who lives near Raleigh

*Big Rumble-the Perdue marching band plays a version of this song. Since Sonny & Bobby play “marching band instruments,” they got the spotlight during this song.

**** of course, Treah and I ran into an old friend at the liquor tent. While ordering my “pre-show” bottle of Shiraz, I couldn’t help but overhear the dulcet tones of a VERY familiar voice with a highly distinctive accent. I mean, where else would Dreadlock Dave be? *****

***** So now I can add the phrases “devotee” and “hearty breed” to my list of talents. Right up there with “fanatic”, “psychotic”, and “stalker”.*****

    Highlights:
Bruce mentioned our friend Zann before playing Look Out Any Window

Bobby Read was on fire all night! He really shone on Tango King,Road Not Taken,Valley Road,Prairie Dog Town,Barcelona Mona(of course), and Big Rumble.

*****Had not heard Road Not Taken in person since Bruce and Molo played with the Virginia Symphony back in 1993. Very, very nice.****

***** Sonny also showed his incredible mastery of the drumstick (perhaps he twirled baton in another life???.*****

Doug Derryberry showed us his extraordinary skills during Road Not Taken and Prairie Dog Town.

JV Collier impressed us all throughout the evening, but he was really jamming during Go Back To Your Woods,Tango King,Road Not Taken and Prairie Dog Town.

*****Bruce told the audience that the people of Raleigh must really have an affinity for those little rodents out in the Midwest badlands, according to all the requests he received. ~~~Confession time~~~ they all came from me!!!!! *****

I don’t think the word has been created yet to describe Bruce Hornsby’s playing this past Saturday night, especially during Road Not Taken. Phenomenal? Singularly spectacular? No-not descriptive enough.

*****How about “Finer than frog hair split four ways”?*****

    Some of the memorable banter:
*Bruce really liked Monica’s (babytweety2yo) request designed around a medicine bottle for Life in the Psychotropics.

***** Yes, about the new song “Psychotropics” —- I want to know where Bruce got a list of my meds. I thought it was an invasion of privacy for him to include them ALL, in order, in a public song. Shame on you, Bruce!*****

***** my son and ALL my money went to NC State — Go Wolfpack!! Woolf — Woolf — Woolf!!!!!!!*****

*Barcelona Mona was played in honor of Branford Marsalis, who lives near Raleigh

*****Branford lives in Durham, and sometimes shows up onstage briefly when Bruce plays the Triangle.******

*Big Rumble-the Perdue marching band plays a version of this song. Since Sonny & Bobby play “marching band instruments,” they got the spotlight during this song.

***** I have often wondered why the accordion has never been widely accepted as a marching band instrument. Hmmm.*****

***** As much as it pains me to say this, I think this Raleigh show was the best one I’ve attended ….. including the Biltmo’ Shos. Maybe it was because of all the sweet nothings that Dreadlock Dave kept whispering in my ear all night!?!? *****

    Jackie

***** Thanks, Treah, for letting me impinge on your most excellent review. Oh, and again, thank you for all your help before and during the meet up and concert. but especially your help BEFORE the concert. You know why!*****

Seems to me thou doth protest too much. I sense a ring of truth here. Oh, BTW, YOU didn’t “elect” yourself to be the bane of my exsistence ….. You needed an archangel to sit upon your shoulder in an attempt to keep you on the straight snd narrow. Although it doesn’t seem to be Archangel St. Michael ….. sounds more like ……. Sister Teresa ……..

So go ahead, pick on me and call me names. But when I win those two tickets to see Bruce and Ricky at the Ryman Auditorium. I may need to chose a more worthy concert partner …… someone who is TRULY nice to me ….. Although the chance to have you as a captive audience is almost too good to pass up. You have two weeks after they pull my name out of the barrel in order to straiten up and fly right!!!!! Maybe, for once, I will get to be the one to decide upon meals, lodging, and extra-curricular activities.

BTW, if those WEREN’T sweet nothings, then what kind of nothings WERE they?????????

But MVF! You’re the one that elected me to be your ‘nemesis’! Soo, just carrying out my ‘fiduciary duty’! :)

You may always choose the ‘lodging, meals and the extra curricular activities’ any time you like, but……Will you get Lost In The Snow and get ‘left behind’ somewhere Across The River and The Great Divide somewhere way far from the Red Plains??? :) Funny! :)

    Funny you should say that,MVF.

It reminds me of the first time I submitted a concert report to the Board.

It received such a nice response from the Board members,I emailed a copy to my sister. Her response was,”If they ever publish a ‘Bruce Hornsby Magazine’,you should writ for it.”. If such a periodical was ever developed,I’d be the first to apply! :)

Thanks for the compliment & for bringing back a happy family memory.
