OK, who got what music for Christmas? Turn us on to what’s playing in your iPod….

    Me?

My wife got me a killer 3-DVD set called The McCartney Years. Very similar to Bruce’s Intersections, except it’s Sir Paul’s videos and concert films. Jeez, it even makes Wild Life sound like a cool tune.

My nephew made me a CD of funk and soul music – 200 mp3s he bought on Napster and iTunes! Starts with Ray Charles’ What’d I Say? and works it’s way through the Stax bands, Al Green, the Philly sound (O’Jays, Barry White), the Ohio funk bands, Parliament Funkadelic and all the way up to Prince and Cameo in the 80s. Quite a diverse little collection – it even has the song that was parodied by Cheech & Chong’s Basketball Jones (a song that I would get a good laugh out of hearing Bruce throw in sometime)!! Oh yeah, and thanks to that collection, I’ve finally been turned onto Mandrill. I’d heard of them back in the day, but I was never familiar with their music. Those boys rocked their brains out!

I got the new Marc Cohn Cd.

biggest anti-climax for a loooong time, terrible work.

it’s lazy songwriting, lazy production (very very compressed and harsh sounding also) and to be honest it’s hard to believe he’s released this pile of dross.

If there ever was a Hornsby vs Cohn thing goin on then I bet bruce had a chuckle listening to this bland and desperate work.

I wouldn’t be to hard on it if I wasn’t expecting an excellent album though I guess.

    Kind regards

Colbie Caillat . . . “Coco” Colbie seems to be a natural, doesn’t she?

Plumb . . . “Blink” Tiffany Arbuckle came up with the name “Plumb” from a song by Suzanne Vega. I have always loved her voice and even though she is singing to her babies on this new album, I think ‘big babies’ like Rich and David could like it. (Well, actually, probably not.) Hey, didn’t the molomolomolos’ just have a baby? And oh yeah, Melissa too! Hope you and your little ones are doing well.

Annie Lennox . . . “Songs of Mass Destruction” Just like Bruce, Annie just gets better with time. She looks and sounds incredible.

I got James Taylor’s . . . “One Man Band” for Christmas (one of those gifts you know that the ‘giver’ actually wanted for themself!) ; ( But it’s all right, cause I’d rather listen to Bruce wing it in Switzerland on “Close Your Eyes” anyway. Now that’s a one man band!

I got the recent new album from The Eagles. I’ve only listened to it once so haven’t really fromed an overall opinion, but it has some nice sounds. Unfortunately I’ve not listened to much music at all recently having had a horrible cold with added blocked-up ears. It makes everything musical sound out of tune. It’s getting better now though, so maybe I’ll get my headphones on this weekend and have another listen.

Is it possible to catch a cold over the Internet? Because I have the very same symptoms! Would I be correct in saying no one could devise a more insidious torture for a music lover?

Get well soon, Jonathan and when you’re back to normal, please let us know what you think about that Eagles album.

Can we re-open this thread for 2009?

What new music did everyone get for Christmas?

    Here’s my list:

    1.B.B. King One Kind Favor
2.Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan Ballad Of The Broken Seas
3.Charlie Haden Family & Friends Rambling Boy

Bruce plays some beautiful, heartfelt piano on the Charlie Haden album (He’s Gone Away,Is This America?),but the one song I can’t stop playing is 20/20 Vision. It made me remember that although Bruce is a tremendous when playing piano, his singing shouldn’t be taken for granted.

    Hmmmm, let’s see if I can remember…

Got a couple of dvds, Rush’s “Snakes and Arrows–Live” and the Police “Live In Buenos Aires.” Haven’t watched the latter yet (very much looking forward to it), the former is a bit of a let down: even tho’ the old stuff sounds great, the new Rush material (featured very prominently on the set) is lackluster and uninspired.

CDs — besides the new Dead Road Trips MSG ’90 (quite good, but I still like the Bruce-era ’91 Dead releases a bit better), I picked up John Adams’ “Big Sur/Charles Ives” which I’ve not got around to.
I did listen to Schoenberg’s “Warsaw” (and etc) — thumbs up — and Webern’s “Symphony/Six Pieces” etc, that I need to listen to again, shall we say… 🙄 Eliott Carter’s “Orchestral Works,” Bartok’s “Concerto for Orchestra,” both get a :D

What else…got the Zappa archive release “Wazoo Boston ’72” (or whatever the thang is called)…reminded me why the Hot Rats/Wazoo era is NOT a fave. :P On the other hand, save up yer dough, spend yer gift cards, use yer coupons to pick up, if you’re so inclined, the Genesis “1970-1975” box set…worth every penny, and I was initially VERY skepticalismic 8-)

But what I was really disappointed about was the no new Bruce ‘best o’ Summer ’08…that was quite a sad day ’round here :P

Jerry Lee Lewis: Live Last Man Standing
    ELVIS: The 68′ Comeback Special

I received some new music and some old music for Christmas this year. My wife got me Lucinda William’s latest CD, “Little Honey”. I’ve been listening to it non-stop for the past two weeks and have fallen in love with about 90% of it. IMO, this record is way better than her last one, “West”, which had some moments on it but ultimately falls flat. (no rap on this one, either, which was a good call on her/the producer’s part).

My dad got me a gag gift/CD, The Bangles “Different Light”. They were my favorite band at the time it came out (I was 8) and I totally had a crush on Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson. I haven’t opened it yet and haven’t decided if I will or if I will take it back and exchange it. I’m guessing the latter. I’m glad this thread got bumped, I missed it the first time around, and now after reading it I have quite a few options for the next time I hit the record store. Yes, I actually still go to the record store. I’m old school like that!

**Forgot about my other gift from dad, a DVD concert of Billy Joel live at Yankee Stadium in ’89 or ’90, can’t remember which. It was around the time Storm Front came out and it’s actually a pretty nice set. It’s funny to me to see the production value of concert videos from that time period. There is lots of swooping and swirling camera shots and close-ups of band members hamming it up for the camera and making faces into the camera a la Van Halen videos from the ’80s. The DVD has sentimental value to me since my wife and I were just there over the summer for the final season at the old Yankee Stadium and also because B. Joel was my childhood inspiration for getting into piano.

This topic has been neglected for far too long… So before another celebration passes us by,I’d like to ask:

Did anyone get any new music over the Christmas holidays (or after)? What did you get?

I got the 4-disc live Tom Petty career retrospective CD set, and the 2-disc Beatles “Past Masters” (with all of the tracks that were singles that never got onto albums).

Rich, I’ve been meaning to pick up that Petty release. Thanks for the reminder! Pandora keeps playing tracks from it, on my Hornsby channel in fact, and I keep forgetting to go grab it.

As for me, I must have been a bad boy this year (softball for ya, SMP!) because Santa didn’t bring any new music around this Christmas. I’ve listened to and liked several tracks from Dave Matthews’ new one, so I may just have to get that one while I’m out as well.

I loved that Bangles album when it came out. There are some good tunes on there, although they probably sound a tad dated by now. The title track was always one of my favorites – nice catchy hook!

The Beatles “Past Masters” was also in my Christmas stocking a few weeks ago! 8-)

I also found a copy of “Blood & Mood” by the Bad Livers and a CD by a local artist named Daniel Lamonds titled “Ocean Of Life.”

Thanks for responding,molo3 and Rich. I always get great ideas for new music from everyone on the Board.

I also picked up Tom Petty’s Live Anthology. I only listened to one cd so far, it’s very good so far…
