That’s right, guys and gals — I need some advice!

Let’s say that I want to tape my upcoming shows (Berklee and The Egg, I’ve got a pretty good seat at each venue, I believe), what kind of digital recorder/mic combo should I use?

Total newbie — I’ve never done it before, so feel free to snicker as long as you gimme some good advice, and the better half can hit a Best Buy tomorrow!

    Thanks — :)

How much are you willing to spend and how fast do you need the gear? Are you looking for an all-in-one mics+recorder in a single unit? This may seem handy, but will offer compromised sound quality as the built in mics are usually nothing to write home about, plus it’s hard to position the recorder where the sound is best. Or are you willing to deal with separate mics + recorder? Do you want/plan to use a stand, clamp a boom arm to your armrest, or wear the mics on your body?

Best Buy is probably not the best place for what you need.

As with anything, you largely get what you pay for, although you do eventually reach a point of diminishing returns.

    Will —

Thanks for the reality checks; I encountered similar ones not long after posting. (I blame it on the fact that BH has temporarily lifted the taper ban, and the subsequent excitement said announcement generated… ;) )

Upon doing a few searches, I came to the somewhat saddening conclusion that me taping just a few shows would be diminishing returns indeed — I don’t see too many shows anymore (have lost interest in most pop acts) so purchasing new equipment just wouldn’t be worth it…unless I took a career as a p.i. and/or an eavesdropper, i.e. quite unlikely. 😆 Not to mention I get cranky having to tote even my wallet, cell, keys and other miscellanea to concerts…put a few beers in me and any extra bits and bobs would become crazily annoying. They might even get in the way of actually enjoying the show! 😮

I guess I’ll just have to keep hitting up people who tape (and/or who manage to finagle soundboards) with a bit of regularity,

    Much appreciated,

    T
