I don’t know how many people know this already, but after roaming around at http://www.brucehornsby.com, i was stunned and saddened to hear of the loss of R.S. on Thursday evening. While I did not know him, I was blessed to have listened to him play with Bruce on many occasions. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the entire Hornsby family for their tragic loss. May he rest in peace.

I’ve just heard from Bruce’s assistant Patti. I’m really at a loss at the moment.

If anyone has any ideas for a tribute, or any particular performances of his that they’d like to hear, then please let me know.

RS was frequently referred to as “the next generation of deadhead”, and I know his appearances were a frequent highlight with Bruce’s followers.

My prayers are for Bobby and Ann, and all of his family.

I’m very, very saddened by this. Truly, I’m nearly in tears, for some reason. I mean, yes, ask not for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee, but I feel like a part of my extended family has departed.

I send everyone who knew R.S.–and his family, of course–my most heartfelt sympathy.

My heart is with Bobby, Ann, Susannah and the entire Hornsby Clan. My family went through almost the identical situation in 1999 – I felt a giant hole in my heart last night up on reading Si’s message.

Interestingly, just this morning, a friend of my brother’s wrote to me and mentioned that he was really feeling Dave. So, as much as the Hornsby’s are feeling their loss, and there is no way to replace that living, beautiful energy that RS carried with him, he will never be completely lost.

…and I also know that those words mean nothing to the family right now. In time, they will, but not right now. …and I am so sorry

I am heartbroken for the entire Hornsby family in their loss of RS. I also lost my sister in an accident, and I know that the shock and the depth of pain is beyond words. My thoughts and my heart will be with the family through these next difficult days and beyond. The only comfort I can offer is that I know that when we lose those we love, they always leave a part of themselves with us. I only wish there was something more to say to lessen the pain of this tragedy.

I just got online and, as I do most days, went to look at Facebook. When I saw that there was an update on the official Bruce page I thought it might be news of some new tour dates. I certainly wasn’t expecting this. I am deeply shocked and saddened, and my heartfelt condolences go to all of the Hornsby family and friends.

    RIP R.S.,
Man, how horrific to lose such a young and great musician.
It’s all too much and so surreal. I was on his site last month checking out his band’s stuff.
Such a sad day in the Hornsby community for sure. I always enjoyed to find Bruce recordings with R.S. guesting, he had such a great guitar sound, Jerryesq even. Who knows where his guitar talents could have taken him. You will be missed brother R.S.

This is truly sad news. The loss of a family member is terrible no matter when it happens, but because R.S. was so young and muically talented,it is even more devastating. My thoughts and prayers are with the Hornsby family.

I’m really sorry to hear this. Met R.S. a few times and he was a real nice guy with humility and talent–a rare combination. Not much more to say other than it’s really sad for those who knew him and condolences to his family. Damm . . .

The first time I saw RS was at Biltmore and I thought…..What in the ____was this kid doing with Bruce & the Noisemakers. Little did I know at the time he was Bobby’s son.

Thru the years he “developed” from someone that Bruce “allowed” to play with, to one that could give Doug a challege when given the chance.

RS reminded me of Bruce himself! 8-)

Bobby told me thru some e-mails that Bruce was also a “tag along” with Bobby Hornsby and The High Octance Kids. If you do a little “diggin”, you can find some great pics with Bruce as the organ player with Bobby and “The High Octance Kids”.

After I realized how Bobby let his kid brother Bruce “tag along” with the “High Octane Kids”, it made me realize that Bruce, remembering his roots, could “See The Same Way” with RS. 8-)

Our prayers are with all the Hornsby family.

My heart sank in disbelief when I opened Si’s Web site. We are so lucky for each day we are given; this loss reminds me to take advantage of what time we have.

When I finally made it to my first Bruce show in 2005 — almost 20 years after I first became a fan — I remember hoping R.S. would be able to come down to Chattanooga to join the show. Sure enough, my wish came true, and there was R.S. playing a duet with Bruce during one of the opening numbers. I highly recommend that 8/18/05 show to anyone who wants to hear more of the work of R.S.

I hung around the back exit for an hour or two after the show to try to meet Bruce and the band. I got R.S.’s autograph that night, too. When I approached him, he seemed almost surprised that I asked for his signature.

He added so much to my enjoyment of that concert. We can only imagine how he would have continued to mature musically. I look forward to hearing his contributions to the new Bruce album this year.

Like everyone else, I was shocked when I saw the email from Si. My heart goes out to all the Hornsbys, I can’t imagine what it must be like to lose a son/nephew/grandson/such a wonderful person and I know it never goes away but I hope that the memories and the love and the music and the family around them are of some comfort.

In the absence of a Daily Dose Day this year, I’ll be making next Saturday (24th) a day for R.S. here on the site.

I’ll update the site several times throughout the day with some of R.S.’s performances with Bruce and the Noisemakers since 2000.

No games, quizzes or donations, just an appreciation of an immense talent with some killer tunes. Be sure to spin them onto CD and share them with whoever you can.

They’ll go up over the course of the day, and remain up for some time for people to enjoy and distribute.

Please join us next Saturday to celebrate the gift that R.S. shared with us all for the past several years.

    So sad!
I miss words. (When I hear his solo on “Mirror on the wall” it always cross my mind, that it’s very few muscicians who can play on only the “pentatone scale” and make it interesting! RS could that!)

Ouch! This is truly a shock. He seemed like such a nice kid, too. He had the best years of his life ahead of him, and he had a marvelously wonderful gift that he selflessly chose to share with the world. We are all poorer for this loss, especially since we had the opportunity to benefit from his sharing of his gift. My heart goes out to his parents and his family. I know this must hurt right now, however I have always believed that this sort of pain is an unfortunate price you sometimes have to pay for loving someone and being close to them — the altenative (not loving or being close so as not to feel pain) is infinitely worse. Surely he must be in a better place.
