Redux

As we all know, Bruce has no intention of becoming a “nostalgia” act, playing the old songs in the same old manner. He’s to be commended for following his own lead and bringing something new to each outing. For example, many people have commented as to how the “new” Mandolin Rain in minor key is equal to or surpasses the original. But that’s also an example of a song Bruce is willing to play live in both the “original” and “nouveau” styles — sometimes in a cool, 50/50 transition.

So do you ever find yourself wanting to hear other Bruce songs in the “classic” style of presentation? For me, it’s “Look Out Any Window.” Bruce’s current rendition seems to lack a lot of the drive and sense of energy that I thought made the original so pursuasive as a “message song.” I mean, he used to really bang on those keys for that song. The current presentation seems to me kind of like a stroll through the park — even though environmental issues are more pressing than ever.

Part of it may have to do with how Bruce’s voice has matured over the years — it may not work with the original style. Part of it may have to do with the fact that I’ve only heard it played solo in recent years. But I have to admit, I do wish he would sing it as if pollution/climate change is one of the most important issues facing us today. Because it is!
