    Jesus wept.

As you know, I’m “Miss Virginia Former”. That’s because I was born and raised and lived for more than 30 years in Virginia Beach. I have a 22 year old son who is an engineering student at NC State.

Had we NOT moved to NC (me kicking and screaming all the way) 12 years ago, today my son would be an engineering student at VA Tech (as was his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather).

I came home from school today, got down on my knees and kissed that awful, terrible, wonderfully safe Carolina clay, then called my son at school and told him I love him (I know, sappy, but hey, I’m his mom; it’s my job) and then finished off half a bottle of wine.

My best friend (and bridesmaid 27 years ago) graduated from, and is currently employed in the engineering dept. at VA Tech. I’ve left a message on her phone and her mom’s phone. God help me, but I took relief in hearing that only students had been killed.

    We need to pray.

I can remember hearing about Dunblane on the car radio, I was about 10 miles away at the time. I was so shocked I had to pull over. Wasn’t long before I was joined by others, some weeping, some terrified, some being physically sick.

How can we end these pointless massacres? After Dunblane we banned most people from having guns, but there’s no real way we can legislate effectively against the bad guys and the crazies.

It’s impossible to express the horror and sadness I feel for the victims and their families in words. Something like this leaves you empty inside.

To have just witnessed the incredible kindness and generosity of everyone on DDD III, as well.

Grab your family and tell them you love them. Keep them safe.

    Our love to you all

    Pete

Something that really scares me about this sort of thing is that it is so common that we know what Dunblane or Columbine are without further qualification. I support someones right to take them selves out if they don’t feel they can cope I cannot comprehend how they can justify taking anyone else with them.

    Va Tech

As you probably know now, there were at least five professors killed in the tragedy. I don’t know which is more sad — to see these talented individuals struck down, or their students, who were only just discovering their potential.
